A range of process conditions have been investigated to maximise the production of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and/or hydrogen from waste tyres. A two-stage pyrolysis-catalytic reactor system was used and the influence of catalyst temperature (700, 800 and 900 °C), tyre: catalyst ratio (1:0.5, 1:1 and 1:2) and steam input (water injection 0, 2 and 5 ml h−1) to the second catalyst stage were investigated. The catalyst used was a Ni/Al2O3 catalyst prepared by a wetness impregnation technique. Carbon was deposited on the catalyst surface during pyrolysis-catalysis increasing with increasing catalyst temperature and also increasing as the tyre: catalyst ratio was raised. Examination of the carbon showed it to be composed of largely filamentous type carbons, producing 253.7 mg g−1 tyre of filamentous carbons at a tyre: catalyst ratio of 1:1 and catalyst temperature of 900 °C. A significant proportion of the deposited filamentous carbons were multi-walled carbon nanotubes as shown by transmission electron microscopy characterisation. The introduction of steam to the process enhanced hydrogen production, producing a maximum of 34.69 mmol g−1 tyre at a water injection rate of 5 ml h−1

Catalytic steam reforming of waste high density polyethylene for the production of hydrogen/syngas has been investigated using different zeolite supported nickel catalysts in a two-stage pyrolysis-catalytic steam reforming reactor system. Experiments were conducted into the influence of the type of zeolite where Ni/ZSM5-30, Ni/β-zeolite-25 and the Ni/Y-zeolite-30 catalysts were compared in relation to hydrogen and syngas production. Results showed that the Ni/ZSM5-30 catalyst generated the maximum syngas production of 100.72 mmol g‾¹ plastic , followed by the Ni/β-zeolite-25 and Ni/Y-zeolite-30 catalyst. In addition, the ZSM-5 supported nickel catalyst showed excellent coke resistance and thermal stability. It was found that the Y type zeolite supported nickel catalyst possessed narrower pores than the other catalysts, which in turn, promoted coke deactivation of the catalyst. Large amounts of filamentous carbons were observed on the surface of the Ni/Y-zeolite-30 catalyst from scanning electron microscope images. In addition, the influence of Si:Al molar ratio for the Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts in relation to hydrogen and syngas yield was inv estigated. The results indicated that hydrogen production was less affected by the Si:Al ratio than the type of zeolite support. Also, the Ni/ZSM5-30 catalyst was further investigated to determine the influence of different process parameters on hydrogen and syngas yield via different reforming temperatures (650, 750, 850 °C) and steam feeding rate (0, 3, 6 g h‾¹). It was found that increasing both the temperature and steam feeding rate favoured hydrogen production from the pyrolysis-catalytic reforming of waste polyethylene. The optimum catalytic performance in terms of syngas production was achieved when the steam feeding rate was 6 g h‾¹ and catalyst temperature was 850 °C in the presence of Ni/ZSM5-30 catalyst, with production of 66.09 mmol H 2 g‾¹(plastic) and 34.63 mmol CO gg‾¹(plastic)

The thermal behaviour of the Rosa mutiflora biomass by thermogravimetric analysis was studied at heating rate 3 K min−1 from ambient temperature to 950 °C. TGA tests were performed in high purity carbon dioxide (99 998%) with a flow rate 200 ml/min and 100 mg of sample, milled and sieved to a particle size below 250 µm. Moreover, yields of gasification products such as hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4) were determined based on the thermovolumetric measurements of catalytic (Ni/Al2O3-SiO2 and Ni/Al2O3-SiO2 with K2O promoter catalysts) and non-catalytic gasification of the Rosa multiflora biomass. Additionally, carbon conversion degrees are presented. Calculations were made of the kinetic parameters of carbon monoxide and hydrogen formation reaction in the catalytic and non-catalytic CO2 gasification processes. A high temperature of 950 °C along with Ni/Al2O3-SiO2and Ni/Al2O3-SiO2 with K2O promoter catalysts resulted in a higher conversion of Rosa multiflora biomass into gaseous yield production with greatly increasing of H2 and CO contents. Consequently, H2 and CO are the key factors to produce renewable energy and bio-gases (synthesis gas). The parameters obtained during the experimental examinations enable a tentative assessment of plant biomasses for the process of large-scale gasification in industrial sectors

In this research we look deeply into the origin, significance and functions of the mandala’s symbolism in Carl Gustav Jung’s work. We base our research on his personal experience in his Red Book, a series of eighteen mandalas painted by himself and placed in the center of the book, as a product of his active imagination. We also look into its understanding through the comparative method, by relating it with the largest intellectual scope around Jung in the first half of the twentieth century. This study goes deeply into the influence of the East thoughts and traditions in Jung’s researches and dives into the Eranos Circle, due to its studies about symbolism and deepening of the East-West relation. It takes into account Giuseppe Tucci as an important figure, emphasizing his theorizing of the Indo-Tibetan mandala within the framework of Jung’s psychology and, finally, pays attention to the conceptualization of the mandala as a special category of symbolism in the theoretical-scientific work of Carl G. Jung, which is a testimony of his intense interest in the Mandala symbolism

Carbon nanotubes and hydrogen production from the reforming of toluene

Catalytic steam reforming of liquid hydrocarbons is one of the promising alternatives for hydrogen production. However, coke deposition on the reacted catalyst results in catalyst deactivation and also CO emission during reforming are among the main challenges in the process. In this work, the production of high-value carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during hydrogen production from catalytic reforming of toluene has been investigated. Thus, less carbon emission and higher product values can be expected from the process. A two-stage fixed bed pyrolysis-reforming reactor was used in this work. The results showed that the addition of a Ni-Mg-Al catalyst, with an additional downstream stainless steel mesh, increased hydrogen production from 24.8 to 54.8 (mmol H g toluene), when water (steam) was injected at a rate of 0.01 g min. CNTs were also produced in the process in the presence of the Ni-Mg-Al catalyst and with a water injection rate of 0.01 g min had the highest band ratio of G′/G when analyzed by Raman spectrometry, indicating the highest purity of CNTs. In addition, Raman spectra of the generated CNTs showed that the purity of CNTs was reduced with the addition of water for reforming without the Ni-Mg-Al catalyst. The presence of the Ni-Mg-Al catalyst significantly increased the yield of CNTs formed on the surface of the stainless steel mesh and also improved the quality of the CNTs in relation to the distribution of diameters and their length
