    Overbite as an Etiological Factor of TMJ Disorders. Clinical and Electromyographic Exploration

    INTRODUCTION: The intermaxillar relationship in overbite is one of the etiological factors of TMJ disorders (Pulinger, Sellingman and Gorbeirn, 1993). Nevertheless, it does not always cause malfunction. Sometimes the compensating mechanisms of the individual prevent the occurrence of symptoms and it only appears when parafunctional habit overloads the stomatognathic apparatus. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to escamine neuromuscular behaviour in patients with such occlusal alteration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present two cases with overbite: one bruxist with malfunction and one nonbruxist without symptoms of malfunction. An occlusal analysis and clinical, kinesiographic and electromyographic exploration was performed in both patients. For the analysis we used a Dentatus A.R.L. articulator, Myotronics electromyograph and K6 kinesiograph. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The results of the exploration were compared with those of a healthy individual with normal occlusion, used as a reference. Lateral movements were restricted and with a mainly vertical component. In both cases there was an increase in electromyographic activity during normal mastication and swallowing, and in maximum force bite there was the same response between anterior temporalis and masseter muscles. The study demonstrated that the mandibular movements in both patients were very similar, and determined by the occlusal factor, in comparison to normal individuals. Nevertheless, the electromyographic exploration shows a different neuromuscular response by the patient adapted to this occlusal problem and the dysfunctional patient

    En la actualidad se ha despertado un interés y necesidad social, académica y profesional por el mundo digital, integrándolas con la ciencia y el método científico, que permiten un avance significativo y creciente de los docentes en su labor diaria para con los estudiantes. Pero se ha identificado un déficit en el desarrollo de las habilidades investigativas y carencia en conocimiento, uso y aplicación de las competencias digitales, lo que me condujo a establecer como propósito de estudio si las competencias digitales se asocian con las habilidades investigativas en docentes del área de ciencia y tecnología de distintos centros educativos. La metodología empleada fue de tipo básica, con un diseño no experimental de alcance transversal correlacional, bajo un enfoque cuantitativo. Los cuestionarios aplicados fueron validados por cinco jueces expertos y validado por Prueba Binomial, los cuales han sido adaptados de los autores Córdova (2021) y Ramírez (2020), dichos instrumentos se sometieron a confiabilidad mediante el Alfa de Cronbach, los cuales se aplicaron a una muestra de 72 docentes, escogidos a través de un muestreo probabilístico, obteniendo como resultado que si existe una correlación positiva considerable entre las dos variables estudiadas ya que el Rho de Spearman tuvo un valor de 0, 686 y la significancia fue de p = 0,000 ≤ 0.05

    Mutations in Coding and Non-Coding Regions in Varicella-Zoster Virus Causing Fatal Hemorrhagic Fever Without Rash in an Immunocompetent Patient: Case Report

    Introduction: We report the case of a fatal hemorrhagic varicella primary infection in an immunocompetent man and whole-genome characterization of the virus for the investigation of biomarkers of virulence. Case: A 38-year-old patient born in Nigeria presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain and subsequently developed fatal hemorrhagic disease without skin rash. Extensive laboratory tests including serology and PCR for arenaviruses, bunyaviruses and ebolaviruses were negative. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) PCR of sera, liver and spleen tissue samples from autopsy revealed the presence of VZV DNA. Primary infection by varicella-zoster virus with hemorrhagic manifestations was diagnosed after virological testing. The VZV genome was sequenced using a mWGS approach. Bioinformatic analysis showed 53 mutations across the genome, 33 of them producing non-synonymous variants affecting up to 14 genes. Some of them, such as ORF11 and ORF 62, encoded for essential functions related to skin or neurotropism. To our knowledge, the mutations reported here have never been described in a VZV causing such a devastating outcome. Discussion: In immunocompetent patients, viral factors should be considered in patients with uncommon symptoms or severe diseases. Some relevant mutations revealed by using whole genome sequencing (WGS) directly from clinical samples may be involved in this case and deserves further investigation. Conclusion: Differential diagnosis of varicella-zoster virus in immunocompetent adults should be considered among patients with suspected VHF, even if the expected vesicular rash is not present at admission and does not arise thereafter. Whole genome sequencing of strains causing uncommon symptoms and/or mortality is needed for epidemiological surveillance and further characterization of putative markers of virulence. Additionally, this report highlights the recommendation for a VZV vaccination policy in non-immunized migrants from developing countries.This work was supported by a grant from Instituto de Salud Carlos III.     Towards the integration of urban sound planning in urban development processes: the study of four test sites within the SONORUS project

    Noise pollution in urban environments is today a major problem affecting inhabitants of many European cities. Reducing noise is therefore a necessity. As a result, many cities now have noise action plans comprising concrete actions to tackle noise issues in affected areas. Nevertheless, these often isolated documents only address existing problems. In order to change this practice an integrated strategy is necessary. A new approach to urban sound planning, a holistic approach, is being developed and tested within the SONORUS project and it is described in this paper. SONORUS, the Urban Sound Planner project, is an initial training network (ITN) that is educating researchers in a whole range of acoustic disciplines, as well as in advanced urban planning processes. An essential part of this training is the application of the holistic approach to real test sites. Although this is an ongoing work, a few innovative techniques were already developed and its application to the test sites resulted in improved urban sound planning tools. This paper promotes the discussion about the implications that the holistic approach might have in urban sound planning policies and how it can be a driving force for changing the noise pollution situation in urban environment

    IPv6 Addressing Proxy: Mapping Native Addressing from Legacy Technologies and Devices to the Internet of Things (IPv6)

    Sensors utilize a large number of heterogeneous technologies for a varied set of application environments. The sheer number of devices involved requires that this Internet be the Future Internet, with a core network based on IPv6 and a higher scalability in order to be able to address all the devices, sensors and things located around us. This capability to connect through IPv6 devices, sensors and things is what is defining the so-called Internet of Things (IoT). IPv6 provides addressing space to reach this ubiquitous set of sensors, but legacy technologies, such as X10, European Installation Bus (EIB), Controller Area Network (CAN) and radio frequency ID (RFID) from the industrial, home automation and logistic application areas, do not support the IPv6 protocol. For that reason, a technique must be devised to map the sensor and identification technologies to IPv6, thus allowing homogeneous access via IPv6 features in the context of the IoT. This paper proposes a mapping between the native addressing of each technology and an IPv6 address following a set of rules that are discussed and proposed in this work. Specifically, the paper presents a technology-dependent IPv6 addressing proxy, which maps each device to the different subnetworks built under the IPv6 prefix addresses provided by the internet service provider for each home, building or user. The IPv6 addressing proxy offers a common addressing environment based on IPv6 for all the devices, regardless of the device technology. Thereby, this offers a scalable and homogeneous solution to interact with devices that do not support IPv6 addressing. The IPv6 addressing proxy has been implemented in a multi-protocol Sensors 2013, 13 6688 card and evaluated successfully its performance, scalability and interoperability through a protocol built over IPv6

    Non-productive angiogenesis disassembles Aß plaque-associated blood vessels

    The human Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brain accumulates angiogenic markers but paradoxically, the cerebral microvasculature is reduced around Aß plaques. Here we demonstrate that angiogenesis is started near Aß plaques in both AD mouse models and human AD samples. However, endothelial cells express the molecular signature of non-productive angiogenesis (NPA) and accumulate, around Aß plaques, a tip cell marker and IB4 reactive vascular anomalies with reduced NOTCH activity. Notably, NPA induction by endothelial loss of presenilin, whose mutations cause familial AD and which activity has been shown to decrease with age, produced a similar vascular phenotype in the absence of Aß pathology. We also show that Aß plaque-associated NPA locally disassembles blood vessels, leaving behind vascular scars, and that microglial phagocytosis contributes to the local loss of endothelial cells. These results define the role of NPA and microglia in local blood vessel disassembly and highlight the vascular component of presenilin loss of function in AD

    Targeted sound attenuation capacity of 3D printed noise cancelling waveguides

The potential for attenuation in these waveguides is characterised through experimentally measured acoustic-absorption (α) and Transmission Loss (TL). This was done to evaluate the potential of geometry-controlled waveguides in the development of passive sound cancelling structures. Geometrically complex waveguides to exploit the Herschel–Quincke-Arjunan (HQA) waveguide model manufactured in Nylon-12 using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) are presented. The attenuation of the waveguides was compared to the bulk Nylon-12 materials to segregate the material-based influence. The results showed that the performance of HQA waveguides can be controlled as a function of length, diameter and waveguide-tortuosity. Accordingly, under right parameters significant improvement in α (0.96, 0.80, 0.61 and 0.98) and TL (65.59%, 30.15%, 53.36% and 95.28%) can be achieved at the design frequency. The proposed methodology can be used to develop customisable waveguides exploiting the principles of acoustic wave interference for a range of application including building walls, noise barriers and absorptive panels.UK Department for Transpor
