    Risk Sharing among OECD and EU Countries: The Role of Capital Gains, Capital Income, Transfers, and Saving

    We estimate the amount of income and consumption smoothing (risk sharing) between OECD countries during the period 1970{2003 with a particular focus on EU and EMU countries. Income smoothing from international factor income has increased in the EU and, in particular, the EMU but not in the non-EU OECD since the introduction of the Euro. Consumption smoothing from pro-cyclical government saving has declined in the EMU, but not in the non-EU OECD, since the signing of the Maastricht treaty. We find that when capital gains and losses on international asset positions are considered part of income, the magnitude of capital gains leads to huge amounts of income smoothing and dis-smoothing although, at the time horizons we examine, the capital gains or losses are only weakly reflected in consumption.     We estimate the amount of income and consumption smoothing (risk sharing) between countries in the European Monetary Union (EMU) and between other developed countries during the period 1970–2003. In particular, we examine if EMU countries display different patterns of risk sharing than other developed countries in the period leading up to and following the formation of the EMU in 1999. We find that income smoothing from international factor income has increased in the EMU since the introduction of the EMU and that consumption smoothing from procyclical government saving has declined steeply in the EMU since the signing of the Maastricht treaty.EMU, Risk Sharing, economic determinants of risk sharing

    Effect of iloprost on contractile impairment and mitochondrial degeneration in ischemia-reperfusion of skeletal muscle

    Purpose Acute lower extremity ischemia is still a main cause of mortality and morbidity in orthopedic traumatology and reconstructive surgery. In acute lower extremity ischemia, the skeletal muscles are the tissues that are the most vulnerable to ischemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of iloprost (IL) therapy on skeletal muscle contractile impairment and mitochondrial degeneration in an acute lower extremity ischemia-reperfusion rat model. Main Methods Forty Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into a control group and four experimental groups. Experimental groups were either subjected to 2 h of lower extremity ischemia followed by a 4-h reperfusion period or to 4 h of ischemia followed by an 8-h reperfusion period. Except for the animals in the control group, all animals received IL (1 ng/kg/min) or saline (1 ml/kg) by intraperitoneal infusion for 10 min immediately before reperfusion. At the end of the recording of skeletal muscle electrical activity and contractility, all rats were sacrificed by decapitation and muscle samples of lower extremity were immediately harvested for histopathologic analyses. Results After ischemia-reperfusion, a breakdown in the force–frequency curves of extensor digitorum longus muscle was observed, showing the diminished muscle contractility. However, IL significantly improved muscle contractility following injury induced by 2 h of ischemia followed by a 4-h reperfusion period. In addition, IL partially ameliorated mitochondrial degeneration in the muscle cells of ischemia groups. Conclusion This study indicates that immediate IL therapy repairs muscle damage especially after 2 h of ischemia and 4 h of reperfusion and therefore that IL improves contractile function

    Passive force balancing of an active magnetic regenerative liquefier

    Active magnetic regenerators (AMR) have the potential for high efficiency cryogen liquefaction. One active magnetic regenerative liquefier (AMRL) configuration consists of dual magnetocaloric regenerators that reciprocate in a persistent-mode superconducting solenoid. Issues with this configuration are the spatial and temporal magnetization gradients that induce large magnetic forces and winding currents. To solve the coupled problem, we present a force minimization approach using passive magnetic material to balance a dual-regenerator AMR. A magnetostatic model is developed and simulated force waveforms are compared with experimental measurements. A genetic algorithm identifies force-minimizing passive structures with virtually ideal balancing characteristics. Implementation details are investigated which affirm the potential of the proposed methodology

    Magnetocaloric properties of Fe_{2-x}T_xP (T = Ru and Rh) from electronic structure calculations and magnetisation measurements

    An analysis of the magnetocaloric properties of the pure and substituted Fe2P compounds is made based on KKR-CPA electronic structure calculations and magnetisation M(H,T) measurements. The computed electronic densities of states and magnetic moments are used to calculate both the values of the electronic and magnetic entropies, which fairly agree with the experimental findings. To enlighten the magnetic properties above Curie temperature, the paramagnetic state behaviours are simulated using the disordered local moments (DLM) concept. The KKR-CPA computations show, that in Fe2P, the Fe magnetic moment of the (3f) site disappears in the DLM state, while the moment of the (3g) site is only little lowered, comparison made with the low temperature ferromagnetic state.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to J.     Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.
