Many immigrate to Missouri and attempt to settle there, to form a home and to integrate themselves into the greater community, the larger culture that contains them. The process of acculturation may require the help of acquaintances, friends and relatives. But, clearly media available to Latinos play, I contend in this work, a pivotal role to help Hispanics find the entrances and exits within the maze that is, in the eyes of a foreigner, a new culture. Within the greater framework of "uses and gratifications" and "acculturation" theories I investigate the effect that ethnic media has on the process of acculturation in Latinos. I conducted a survey on this population residing in Missouri from various origins, educational levels and time of residency. The empirical results suggest that, for the population under study, Spanish language media plays a pivotal role in the process of acculturation and that its importance decreases, as expected, over time.Includes bibliographical reference

Does News Platform Matter? Comparing Online Journalistic Role Performance to Newspaper, Radio, and Television

The shifting role of journalism in a digital age has affected long-standing journalistic norms across media platforms. This has reinvigorated discussion on how work in online newsrooms compares to other platforms that differ in media affordances and forms. Still, more studies are needed on whether those differences translate into distinct practices, especially when examining cross-national studies. Based on a content analysis of 148,474 stories produced by 365 media organizations from 37 countries, this article compares the performance of journalistic roles in online newsrooms to three other types of media—TV, radio, and print. The paper analyzes if journalistic roles present themselves differently across platforms, and if these differences are constant or they vary across countries. Results show that there are measurable differences in role performance in online journalism compared to other platforms. Platform had a significant impact, particularly in terms of service and infotainment orientation, while the implementation of roles oriented toward public service was more similar. Additionally, country differences in the relationship between role performance and platforms mainly emerged for roles that enable political influence on news coverage, with differences in the relationship between online vs. traditional platforms appearing to be distinct features of the specific political system. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

No evidence that wild red deer (Cervus elaphus) on the Iberian Peninsula are a reservoir of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis infection

The potential role of red deer (Cervus elaphus) as a reservoir of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) infection is largely unknown. A total of 332 wild red deer were investigated using post-mortem examination, bacteriology and serology. Only three animals (1.12%) were found to have lesions on histopathological examination and no MAP bacteria were recovered on culture. The results suggest it is unlikely that wild red deer make a significant contribution to the maintenance of MAP infection in the region. The cross-reactivity of the ELISAs used indicates this diagnostic modality is ineffective in the detection of MAP infection in this species. The implications of these results for the control of this important pathogen in both livestock and wildlife are discussed. This research was supported by MCINN Grants AGL2008-03875/FEDER and FP7EU/TB-STEP-212414.Peer Reviewe

A mídia paraguaia reflete traços e tendências do sistema político desde a criação do país.

Expression of the connexin 43 gene is increased in the kidneys and the lungs of rats injected with bacterial lipopolysaccharide

At the molecular level, the inflammatory response is characterized by changes in gene expression of various organ systems. One gene by which expression has been observed to be altered in the liver during inflammation is connexin (Gx) 32. Ox genes encode the polypeptide subunits of the hemichannels that comprise gap junctions. In the present study, an increase in the expression of a different Cx gene, Cx43, was observed in the kidney and lung of rats injected with a sublethal dose (1 mg/kg) of bacterial lipolysaccharide (LPS). To elucidate the possible mechanism by which the Cx43 expression is increased during inflammation, the 5' flanking region of the gene was cloned and coupled to a reporter gene (human growth hormone). This construct was transfected into cells of renal origin (NRK), which express Cx43 constitutively. The Cx43 promoter activity was indeed found in the cloned region, which contained 725 base pairs upstream of the transcriptional initiation site of the Cx43 gene. The Cx43 promoter activity was found to be increased by incubation of the transfected cells with serum obtained from LPS-treated rats. Moreover, direct incubation of the transfected cells with LPS or interleukin 1 beta, but not with other cytokines, was observed to increase the Cx43 promoter activity. These results suggest the expression of Cx43 after administration of LPS is part of the inflammatory response. Moreover, the expression of this gene seems to be mediated by proinflammatory mediators

Johns Hopkins University. School of Medicine. Division of Pediatric Surgery; Estados Unidos.Gap junctions form channels that mediate the communication between adjacent cells. Alterations in gap junction function and/or expression are believed to contribute to cardiac dysfunction such as those observed in septic patients. The expression of connexin 43 (Cx43), the subunit component of the most abundant cardiac gap junction, was analysed in rat heart during inflammation induced by the administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Cx43 mRNA levels were found to be dramatically (>50%) and rapidly (2 h) reduced in the heart after injection of LPS (1 mg/kg). To investigate the possible mechanism of the decrease in Cx43 expression during inflammation, the promoter region of this gene was cloned. The basal Cx43 promoter activity was observed within 224-134 bp of the transcriptional initiation site after transfection into a rat myoblast cell-line (H9c2). The Cx43 promoter activity was found to be reduced by incubation of the transfected cells with serum obtained from LPS-treated rats. Moreover, Cx43 promoter activity was also decreased upon incubation with tumour necrosis factor alpha. These results suggest that Cx43 expression in the heart can be modulated by circulating cytokines. These observations may have important implications in the depression of heart function observed in septic patients
