Occupational Therapy in Primary Care: Determining Receptiveness of Occupational Therapists and Primary Care Providers
Background: Primary care (PC) is an emerging practice setting for occupational therapy; however, few occupational therapists currently practice in this setting due to barriers, including uncertainty about reimbursement and the role of occupational therapists. This pilot study aimed to determine if PC providers and occupational therapists are receptive to occupational therapists as integrated interprofessional PC team members if barriers to inclusion are addressed.
Method: After a brief educational paragraph explaining potential occupational therapy contributions to PC teams, the participants accessed a link to survey questions regarding their personal level of receptiveness to occupational therapy in PC. The questions comprised Likert scale and open-ended answers.
Results: Of the Likert scale responses, 94%-99% provided by occupational therapists and 82%-97% provided by PC providers indicated possibly or yes to the inclusion of occupational therapists on the PC team. The descriptive responses were primarily supportive.
Discussion: The majority of the occupational therapists and PC providers surveyed indicated support for including occupational therapists in primary care. This indicates that when barriers are addressed, occupational therapists and PC providers are receptive to the inclusion of occupational therapists as members of the interprofessional PC team
Neighborhood level risk factors for type 1 diabetes in youth: the SEARCH case-control study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>European ecologic studies suggest higher socioeconomic status is associated with higher incidence of type 1 diabetes. Using data from a case-control study of diabetes among racially/ethnically diverse youth in the United States (U.S.), we aimed to evaluate the independent impact of neighborhood characteristics on type 1 diabetes risk. Data were available for 507 youth with type 1 diabetes and 208 healthy controls aged 10-22 years recruited in South Carolina and Colorado in 2003-2006. Home addresses were used to identify Census tracts of residence. Neighborhood-level variables were obtained from 2000 U.S. Census. Multivariate generalized linear mixed models were applied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Controlling for individual risk factors (age, gender, race/ethnicity, infant feeding, birth weight, maternal age, number of household residents, parental education, income, state), higher neighborhood household income (p = 0.005), proportion of population in managerial jobs (p = 0.02), with at least high school education (p = 0.005), working outside the county (p = 0.04) and vehicle ownership (p = 0.03) were each independently associated with increased odds of type 1 diabetes. Conversely, higher percent minority population (p = 0.0003), income from social security (p = 0.002), proportion of crowded households (0.0497) and poverty (p = 0.008) were associated with a decreased odds.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our study suggests that neighborhood characteristics related to greater affluence, occupation, and education are associated with higher type 1 diabetes risk. Further research is needed to understand mechanisms underlying the influence of neighborhood context.</p
Evaluating the clade size effect in alternative measures of branch support
The clade size effect refers to a bias that causes middle-sized clades to be less supported than small or large-sized clades. This bias is present in resampling measures of support calculated under maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony and in Bayesian posterior probabilities. Previous analyses indicated that the clade size effect is worst in maximum parsimony, followed by maximum likelihood, while Bayesian inference is the least affected. Homoplasy was interpreted as the main cause of the effect. In this study, we explored the presence of the clade size effect in alternative measures of branch support under maximum parsimony: Bremer support and symmetric resampling, expressed as absolute frequencies and frequency differences. Analyses were performed using 50 molecular and morphological matrices. Symmetric resampling showed the same tendency that bootstrap and jackknife did for maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood. Few matrices showed a signicant bias using Bremer support, presenting a better performance than resampling measures of support and comparable to Bayesian posterior probabilities. Our results indicate that the problem is not maximum parsimony, but resampling measures of support. We corroborated the role of homoplasy as a possible cause of the clade size effect, increasing the number of random trees during the resampling, which together with the higher chances that medium-sized clades have of being contradicted generates the bias during the perturbation of the original matrix, making it stronger in resampling measures of support.Fil: Chemisquy, Maria Amelia. The Science Performance of JWST as Characterized in Commissioning
This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb
Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period.
We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments,
and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch
expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of
achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the
board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases,
JWST will go deeper faster than expected. The telescope and instrument suite
have demonstrated the sensitivity, stability, image quality, and spectral range
that are necessary to transform our understanding of the cosmos through

The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite
