    Performance control considering risks for construction projects

    Making decisions during the building phase of a project is much important for their success. To support that process, it has developed the Earned Value Management system which considers scope, time and cost to measure the project performance and to identify variances from the original plan. By identifying performance variances, the Project Manager has to do corrective actions for correcting the course of the project. The EVM is a deterministic method so any variance reported is considered a performance problem that needs to be attended. This characteristic is currently considered a weakness of the method for being applied in daily operations. The paper presents an EVM-based method for controlling time and cost that allows the project manager to determine when really needed corrective actions are. The proposal was applied in a construction project to evaluate its utility

    El presente artículo estudia las relaciones entre prensa y política durante el periodo de 1929-1931, correspondiente a la transición de la Hegemonía Conservadora a la presidencia liberal de Enrique Olaya (1930-1934). Un periodo durante el cual tanto Vanguardia Liberal como su propietario-director Alejandro Galvis Galvis tuvieron protagonismo en la dinámica política santandereana. A partir de esta referencia, y apoyándose en la contextualización, se busca identificar las características particulares del caso de Santander en el marco general del tránsito hacia la República Liberal en Colombia.This paper study the relations between press and politic during 1929 and 1931, the period of the transition from the Conservative hegemony to the liberal presidency of Enrique Olaya Herrera (1930-1934). During that period both Vanguardia Liberal and its director-owner Alejandro Galvis Galvis had a lead role within the Santander´s political dynamic. However, the role of SWI/SNF in acute myeloid leukemia is poorly understood. To date, SWI/SNF complexes are thought to be oncogenic in AML or, at least, necessary to support leuke‑ mogenesis. However, mutation patterns in SWI/SNF genes in AML are consistent with a tumor suppressor role. Here, we study the SWI/SNF subunit BCL7A, which has been found to be recurrently mutated in lymphomas, but whose role in acute myeloid malignancies is currently unknown. Methods Data mining and bioinformatic approaches were used to study the mutational status of BCL7A and the correlation between BCL7A expression and promoter hypermethylation. Methylation‑specific PCR, bisulfite sequenc‑ ing, and 5‑aza‑2’‑deoxycytidine treatment assays were used to determine if BCL7A expression was silenced due to promoter hypermethylation. Cell competition assays after BCL7A expression restoration were used to assess the role of BCL7A in AML cell line models. Differential expression analysis was performed to determine pathways and genes altered after BCL7A expression restoration. To establish the role of BCL7A in tumor development in vivo, tumor growth was compared between BCL7A‑expressing and non‑expressing mouse xenografts using in vivo fluorescence imaging. Results BCL7A expression was inversely correlated with promoter methylation in three external cohorts: TCGA‑LAML (N = 160), TARGET‑AML (N = 188), and Glass et al. (2017) (N = 111). The AML‑derived cell line NB4 silenced the BCL7A expression via promoter hypermethylation. Ectopic BCL7A expression in AML cells decreased their competitive ability compared to control cells. Additionally, restoration of BCL7A expression reduced tumor growth in an NB4 mouse xenograft model. Also, differential expression analysis found that BCL7A restoration altered cell cycle pathways and modified significantly the expression of genes like HMGCS1, H1-0, and IRF7 which can help to explain its tumor sup‑ pressor role in AML. Conclusions BCL7A expression is silenced in AML by promoter methylation.     Impacto ambiental del vertimiento de aguas servidas en aglomerados urbanos ilegales del municipio de Villavicencio, Colombia

    Context: The formation of illegal housing conglomerates, in most cases, without adequate basic sanitation, can lead to deterioration of natural resources. The aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental impact associated with the urban sewage discharge (USD) on ground and water bodies in an illegal urban agglomeration in the Villavicencio municipality. Methodology: From 15 sampling points, physicochemical parameters of water were determined: solids series, turbidity, color, chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), and soil: pH, EC, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and C, N and trace elements concentration, to relate and identify the impacts on resources in the study area. Results: The USD samples presented high values in parameters such as turbidity (326 NTU), color (744 UPC) and crude COD that ranged from 600 to 1500 mg L-1. In the water bodies surrounding the sector, the COD varied between 368 and 429 mg L-1. Likewise, DO ranged from 5,7 to 7,1 mg L-1, values that were favorable for the channels, however, they were low for the USD (0,9 mg L-1). On the other hand, a significant alteration was determined in soil physicochemical properties such as pH (5,8-8,2), CEC (8,2-16,8 mEq-g 100 g-1), EC (57,6- 517,3 µS cm-1) and N (0,03-0,84 mg Kg-1) mainly associated with discharges. Conclusions: It was possible to identify a negative effect on water and soil resources, generated by uncontrolled discharges of USD in the place, which is related to a loss of environmental services and low life quality.Contexto: La conformación de conglomerados habitacionales ilegales, en la mayoría de los casos, sin saneamiento básico adecuado, puede generar deterioro de los recursos naturales. El presente estudio evaluó el impacto ambiental asociado al vertimiento de aguas servidas urbanas (ASU) sobre suelos y cuerpos de agua, en un aglomerado urbano ilegal del municipio de Villavicencio. Metodología: A partir de 15 puntos de muestreo se determinaron parámetros fisicoquímicos de agua: serie de sólidos, turbiedad, color, demanda química de oxígeno (DQO), pH, conductividad eléctrica (CE), oxígeno disuelto (OD); y de suelo: pH, CE, capacidad de intercambio catiónico (CIC) y concentración de C, N y elementos traza, para identificar impactos sobre los recursos en el área de estudio. Resultados: Las muestras de ASU presentaron valores elevados en parámetros como turbiedad (326 NTU), color (744 UPC) y DQO bruta (600 a 1500 mg l-1). En los análisis de cuerpos de agua aledaños al sector, la DQO varió entre 368 y 429 mg l-1. Asimismo, el OD osciló entre 5,7 y 7,1 mg l-1, valores que resultaron favorables para los cauces; sin embargo, fueron bajos para el ASU (0,9 mg l-1). Por su parte, se determinó una alteración significativa en propiedades fisicoquímicas del suelo como pH (5,8-8,2), CIC (8,2-16,78 mEq-g 100 g-1), CE (57,6-517,3 µS cm-1) y N (0,03-0,84 mg kg-1) asociadas principalmente a los vertimientos. Conclusiones: Fue posible identificar un efecto negativo en los recursos agua y suelo, generado por descargas descontroladas de ASU en el lugar, lo cual se encuentra relacionado una pérdida de servicios ambientales y baja calidad de vida

    Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

    Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science.
