    Large-eddy simulation of spectral coherence in a wind turbine wake

    This work is mainly dedicated to the study of the characteristics of spectral coherence of turbulence fluctuations in wind turbine wakes. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code has been implemented using a large-eddy simulation (LES) approach, which is thought to be conceptually more suitable for studying the turbulence evolution in a wind turbine wake. Comparisons with experimental data from the Nørrekær Enge II Windfarm, in Denmark, and with an analytical model proposed by Panofsky and Dutton have been performed, and the results are found to be in reasonable agreement with both

    Spitzer observations of NGC2264: The nature of the disk population

    NGC2264 is a young cluster with a rich circumstellar disk population which makes it an ideal target for studying the evolution of stellar clusters. Our goal is to study its star formation history and to analyse the primordial disk evolution of its members. The study presented is based on data obtained with Spitzer IRAC and MIPS, combined with deep NIR ground-based FLAMINGOS imaging and previously published optical data. We build NIR dust extinction maps of the molecular cloud associated with the cluster, and determine it to have a mass of 2.1x10^3Msun above an Av of 7mag. Using a differential K_s-band luminosity function of the cluster, we estimate the size of its population to be 1436±\pm242 members. The star formation efficiency is ~25%. We identify the disk population: (i) optically thick inner disks, (ii) anaemic inner disks, and (iii) disks with inner holes, or transition disks. We analyse the spatial distribution of these sources and find that sources with thick disks segregate into sub-clusterings, whereas sources with anaemic disks do not. Furthermore, sources with anaemic disks are found to be unembedded (Av<3mag), whereas the clustered sources with thick disks are still embedded within the parental cloud. NGC2264 has undergone more than one star-forming event, where the anaemic and extincted thick disk population appear to have formed in separate episodes. We also find tentative evidence of triggered star-formation in the Fox Fur Nebula. In terms of disk evolution, our findings support the emerging disk evolution paradigm of two distinct evolutionary paths for primordial optically thick disks: a homologous one where the disk emission decreases uniformly at NIR and MIR wavelengths, and a radially differential one where the emission from the inner region of the disk decreases more rapidly than from the outer region (forming transition disks).Comment: accepted for publishing in A&

    Bronchoscopist's perception of the quality of the single-use bronchoscope (Ambu aScope4™) in selected bronchoscopies: a multicenter study in 21 Spanish pulmonology services

    Background: The disposable bronchoscope is an excellent alternative to face the problem of SARS-CoV-2 and other cross infections, but the bronchoscopist's perception of its quality has not been evaluated. Methods: To evaluate the quality of the Ambu-aScope4 disposable bronchoscope, we carried out a cross-sectional study in 21 Spanish pulmonology services. We use a standardized questionnaire completed by the bronchoscopists at the end of each bronchoscopy. The variables were described with absolute and relative frequencies, measures of central tendency and dispersion depending on their nature. The existence of learning curves was evaluated by CUSUM analysis. Results: The most frequent indications in 300 included bronchoscopies was bronchial aspiration in 69.3% and the median duration of these was 9.1 min. The route of entry was nasal in 47.2% and oral in 34.1%. The average score for ease of use, image, and aspiration quality was 80/100. All the planned techniques were performed in 94.9% and the bronchoscopist was satisfied in 96.6% of the bronchoscopies. They highlighted the portability and immediacy of the aScope4TM to start the procedure in 99.3%, the possibility of taking and storing images in 99.3%. The CUSUM analysis showed average scores > 70/100 from the first procedure and from the 9th procedure more than 80% of the scores exceeded the 80/100 score. Conclusions: The aScope4™ scored well for ease of use, imaging, and aspiration. We found a learning curve with excellent scores from the 9th procedure.     Alteration of inhibitory circuits in the somatosensory cortex of Ts65Dn mice, a model for Down's syndrome

    Down's syndrome (DS), with an incidence of one in 800 live births, is the most common genetic disorder associated with mental retardation. This trisomy on chromosome 21 induces a variable phenotype in which the only common feature is the presence of mental retardation. The neural mechanisms underlying mental retardation might include defects in the formation of neuronal networks and neural plasticity. DS patients have alterations in the morphology, the density and the distribution of dendritic spines in the pyramidal neurons of the cortex. Our hypothesis is that the deficits in dendritic arborization observed in the principal neurons of DS patients and Ts65Dn mice (a model for DS that mimics most of the structural alterations observed in humans) may be mediated to some extent by changes in their inhibitory inputs. Different types of interneurons control different types of inhibition. Therefore, to understand well the changes in inhibition in DS, it is necessary to study the different types of interneurons separately. We have studied the expression of synaptophysin, Glutamic acid decarboxylase-67 (GAD-67) and calcium-binding protein-expressing cells in the primary somatosensory cortex of 4¿5 month old Ts65Dn mice. We have observed an increment of GAD67 immunoreactivity that is related mainly to an increment of calretinin-immunoreactive cells and among them the ones with bipolar morphology. Since there is a propensity for epilepsy in DS patients, this increase in interneurons might reflect an attempt by the system to block overexcitation rather than an increment in total inhibition and could explain the deficit in interneurons and principal cells observed in elderly DS patients

    Incidence, clinical characteristics and management of inflammatory bowel disease in Spain: large-scale epidemiological study

    (1) Aims: To assess the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Spain, to describe the main epidemiological and clinical characteristics at diagnosis and the evolution of the disease, and to explore the use of drug treatments. (2) Methods: Prospective, population-based nationwide registry. Adult patients diagnosed with IBD—Crohn’s disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC) or IBD unclassified (IBD-U)—during 2017 in Spain were included and were followed-up for 1 year. (3) Results: We identified 3611 incident cases of IBD diagnosed during 2017 in 108 hospitals covering over 22 million inhabitants. The overall incidence (cases/100, 000 person-years) was 16 for IBD, 7.5 for CD, 8 for UC, and 0.5 for IBD-U; 53% of patients were male and median age was 43 years (interquartile range = 31–56 years). During a median 12-month follow-up, 34% of patients were treated with systemic steroids, 25% with immunomodulators, 15% with biologics and 5.6% underwent surgery. The percentage of patients under these treatments was significantly higher in CD than UC and IBD-U. Use of systemic steroids and biologics was significantly higher in hospitals with high resources. In total, 28% of patients were hospitalized (35% CD and 22% UC patients, p < 0.01). (4) Conclusion: The incidence of IBD in Spain is rather high and similar to that reported in Northern Europe. IBD patients require substantial therapeutic resources, which are greater in CD and in hospitals with high resources, and much higher than previously reported.     Photochemical fingerprinting Is a sensitive probe for the detection of synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists; toward robust point-of-care detection

    With synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist (SCRA) use still prevalent across Europe and structurally advanced generations emerging, it is imperative that drug detection methods advance in parallel. SCRAs are a chemically diverse and evolving group, which makes rapid detection challenging. We have previously shown that fluorescence spectral fingerprinting (FSF) has the potential to provide rapid assessment of SCRA presence directly from street material with minimal processing and in saliva. Enhancing the sensitivity and discriminatory ability of this approach has high potential to accelerate the delivery of a point-of-care technology that can be used confidently by a range of stakeholders, from medical to prison staff. We demonstrate that a range of structurally distinct SCRAs are photochemically active and give rise to distinct FSFs after irradiation. To explore this in detail, we have synthesized a model series of compounds which mimic specific structural features of AM-694. Our data show that FSFs are sensitive to chemically conservative changes, with evidence that this relates to shifts in the electronic structure and cross-conjugation. Crucially, we find that the photochemical degradation rate is sensitive to individual structures and gives rise to a specific major product, the mechanism and identification of which we elucidate through density-functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT. We test the potential of our hybrid “photochemical fingerprinting” approach to discriminate SCRAs by demonstrating SCRA detection from a simulated smoking apparatus in saliva. We examined the hypothesis that the size and composition of stream water NNP and colloids vary systematically across Europe. To test this hypothesis, 96 stream water samples were simultaneously collected in 26 forested headwater catchments along two transects across Europe. Three size fractions (similar to 1-20 nm, >20-60 nm, and >60 nm) of NNP and fine colloids were identified with Field Flow Fractionation coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and an organic carbon detector. The results showed that NNP and fine colloids constituted between 2 +/- 5% (Si) and 53 +/- 21% (Fe; mean +/- SD) of total element concentrations, indicating a substantial contribution of particles to element transport in these European streams, especially for P and Fe. The particulate contents of Fe, Al, and organic C were correlated to their total element concentrations, but those of particulate Si, Mn, P, and Ca were not. The fine colloidal fractions >60 nm were dominated by clay minerals across all sites.     Time-of-Flight Detector for the Characterisation of Laser-Accelerated Protons

    [Otros] Lasers of ultra-high intensity focused on thin targets can form plasmas and release large numbers of charged particles with kinetic energies in the MeV region. The characterization of the accelerated particles requires suitable detectors. We present a time-of-flight detector based on a plastic scintillator optimized for the spectral analysis of laser-accelerated protons. All details of the detector layout are adapted to the expected properties of the proton beam. Particle energies will be separated by the time-of-flight technique over 200 cm path length. The active area (25 mm width) corresponds to a few mrad opening angle. With 5 mm thickness the detector is capable of absorbing protons up to 22.5 MeV. A very thin, aluminized mylar foil shields the scintillator from outer light while absorbing very little particle energy. The scintillation photons are measured with a photomultiplier tube coupled through a bundle of optical fibres. The coupling of these fibres via a PMMA light guide has been previously optimized in simulations with Litrani. A critical aspect of the detection of virtually large numbers of protons emitted in femtosecond pulses is the saturation of the PMT. The latter can be avoided by use of appropriate optical filters. With these the effective dynamic range starts from single particles over several orders of magnitude. Our time-of-flight detector has been calibrated at the Spanish National Accelerator Centre at Sevilla. Proton beams from 0.46 to 5.6 MeV from a tandem accelerator have been used to measure the relation between particle energy and pulse heights.
