    COMPUESTOS FUNCIONALES DE LA LECHE MATERNA

    Newborns have special nutritional requirements due to the incomplete development of their organic systems, which will diminish once the organs acquire full functionality. In the complete development of the infant organism, not only the correct nutrition of the child has a great contribution, but also many other functional compounds naturally present in breast milk such as Hormones, growth factors, neuropeptides, anti-inflammatory agents and immunomodulator agents. A thorough review of the scientific literature regarding the properties and occurrence of such functional compounds in breast milk has been carried out due to their importance in the elaboration of infant food. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to give enough scientific evidence for the use of these compounds as functional ingredients in the production of infant formulas. In general, infant formulas lack in these bioactive compounds, hence their supplementation with bioactive compounds as ingredients might increase the nutritional value of the infant formulas achieving the same positive effects that human milk has on infants.Los recién nacidos poseen unas necesidades nutritivas especiales debido al incompleto desarrollo de sus sistemas de órganos, que irán abandonando conforme estos sistemas vayan adquiriendo su completa funcionalidad. Al correcto desarrollo del organismo infantil va a contribuir no sólo la correcta nutrición del niño, sino también la acción de muchos compuestos funcionales presentes en la leche materna, entre los que destacan: hormonas, factores de crecimiento, neuropéptidos, agentes antiinflamatorios y agentes inmunomoduladores. Debido a la importancia que tienen estos compuestos en la alimentación infantil hemos realizado una revisión bibliográfica sobre sus diferentes propiedades y su presencia en la leche materna, con el objetivo de poder justificar el empleo de estos productos como ingredientes funcionales en la elaboración de las fórmulas infantiles. En general, dichas fórmulas son deficitarias en estos compuestos bioactivos, por lo que su adición como ingrediente podría incrementar la calidad nutricional de las fórmulas infantiles consiguiendo los mismos efectos positivos que sobre el niño tiene la lactancia materna

    The Transcriptome Analysis of Strongyloides stercoralis L3i Larvae Reveals Targets for Intervention in a Neglected Disease

    BackgroundStrongyloidiasis is one of the most neglected diseases distributed worldwide with endemic areas in developed countries, where chronic infections are life threatening. Despite its impact, very little is known about the molecular biology of the parasite involved and its interplay with its hosts. Next generation sequencing technologies now provide unique opportunities to rapidly address these questions.Principal FindingsHere we present the first transcriptome of the third larval stage of S. stercoralis using 454 sequencing coupled with semi-automated bioinformatic analyses. 253,266 raw sequence reads were assembled into 11,250 contiguous sequences, most of which were novel. 8037 putative proteins were characterized based on homology, gene ontology and/or biochemical pathways. Comparison of the transcriptome of S. strongyloides with those of other nematodes, including S. ratti, revealed similarities in transcription of molecules inferred to have key roles in parasite-host interactions. Enzymatic proteins, like kinases and proteases, were abundant. 1213 putative excretory/secretory proteins were compiled using a new pipeline which included non-classical secretory proteins. Potential drug targets were also identified.ConclusionsOverall, the present dataset should provide a solid foundation for future fundamental genomic, proteomic and metabolomic explorations of S. stercoralis, as well as a basis for applied outcomes, such as the development of novel methods of intervention against this neglected parasite

    Atomic scale strain relaxation in axial semiconductor III-V nanowire heterostructures

    Combination of mismatched materials in semiconductor nanowire heterostructures offers a freedom of bandstructure engineering that is impossible in standard planar epitaxy. Nevertheless, the presence of strain and structural defects directly control the optoelectronic properties of these nanomaterials. Understanding with atomic accuracy how mismatched heterostructures release or accommodate strain, therefore, is highly desirable. By using atomic resolution high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with geometrical phase analyses and computer simulations, we are able to establish the relaxation mechanisms (including both elastic and plastic deformations) to release the mismatch strain in axial nanowire heterostructures. Formation of misfit dislocations, diffusion of atomic species, polarity transfer, and induced structural transformations are studied with atomic resolution at the intermediate ternary interfaces. Two nanowire heterostructure systems with promising applications (InAs/InSb and GaAs/GaSb) have been selected as key examples

    Elective Cancer Surgery in COVID-19-Free Surgical Pathways During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic: An International, Multicenter, Comparative Cohort Study.

    PURPOSE: As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19-free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19-free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS: Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19-free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19-free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19-free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score-matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19-free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION: Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19-free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks
