    Thermomechanical Characterization of Carbon Black Reinforced Rubbers During Rapid Adiabatic Straining

    The thermo-mechanical properties of carbon black reinforced natural and styrene butadiene rubbers are investigated under rapid adiabatic conditions. Eleven carbon black grades with varying surface area and structure properties at 40 parts per hundred (phr) loading are studied and the unreinforced equivalents are included for reference. The results show a strong correlation of the modulus, mechanical hysteresis, temperature rise and calculated crystallinity of the rubbers measured in tensile extension with strain amplification factors. This highlights the influence of matrix overstraining on microstructural deformations of the rubber upon extension. The strain amplification factors are calculated via the Guth-Gold equation directly from carbon black type and loading, allowing a correlation of the fundamental morphological properties of carbon black with thermal and mechanical properties of rubbers upon extension. Analysis of the thermal measurements of the rubber compounds upon extension and retraction and contrasting between crystallizing and non-crystallizing rubbers reveals that a substantial irreversible heat generation is present upon extension of the rubber compounds. These irreversible effects most likely originate from microstructural damage mechanisms which have been proposed to account for the Mullins Effect in particle reinforced rubbers

    Stem similarity modulates infants' acquisition of phonological alternations

    Phonemes have variant pronunciations depending on context. For instance, in American English, the [t] in pat [pĂŠt] and the [d] in pad [pĂŠd] are both realized with a tap [ÉŸ] when the –ing suffix is attached, [pĂŠÉŸÉȘƋ]. We show that despite greater distributional and acoustic support for the [t]-tap alternation, 12-month-olds successfully relate taps to stems with a perceptually-similar final [d], not the dissimilar final-[t]. Thus, distributional learning of phonological alternations is constrained by infants' preference for the alternation of perceptually-similar segments. Further, the ability to relate variant surface forms emerges between 8- and 12-months. Our findings of biased learning provide further empirical support for a role for perceptual similarity in the acquisition of linguistically-relevant categories. We discuss the implications of our findings for phonological theory, language acquisition and models of the mental lexicon

    Genetic diversity fuels gene discovery for tobacco and alcohol use

    Tobacco and alcohol use are heritable behaviours associated with 15% and 5.3% of worldwide deaths, respectively, due largely to broad increased risk for disease and injury(1-4). These substances are used across the globe, yet genome-wide association studies have focused largely on individuals of European ancestries(5). Here we leveraged global genetic diversity across 3.4 million individuals from four major clines of global ancestry (approximately 21% non-European) to power the discovery and fine-mapping of genomic loci associated with tobacco and alcohol use, to inform function of these loci via ancestry-aware transcriptome-wide association studies, and to evaluate the genetic architecture and predictive power of polygenic risk within and across populations. We found that increases in sample size and genetic diversity improved locus identification and fine-mapping resolution, and that a large majority of the 3,823 associated variants (from 2,143 loci) showed consistent effect sizes across ancestry dimensions. However, polygenic risk scores developed in one ancestry performed poorly in others, highlighting the continued need to increase sample sizes of diverse ancestries to realize any potential benefit of polygenic prediction.Peer reviewe

    A study of CP violation in the decays B±→[K+K-π+π-]Dh± (h= K, π) and B±→[π+π-π+π-]Dh±

    The first study of CP violation in the decay mode B±→[K+K-π+π-]Dh± , with h= K, π , is presented, exploiting a data sample of proton–proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 \,fb - 1 . The analysis is performed in bins of phase space, which are optimised for sensitivity to local CP asymmetries. CP -violating observables that are sensitive to the angle Îł of the Unitarity Triangle are determined. The analysis requires external information on charm-decay parameters, which are currently taken from an amplitude analysis of LHCb data, but can be updated in the future when direct measurements become available. Measurements are also performed of phase-space integrated observables for B±→[K+K-π+π-]Dh± and B±→[π+π-π+π-]Dh± decays

    Studies of η\eta and ηâ€Č\eta' production in pppp and ppPb collisions

    The production of η\eta and ηâ€Č\eta' mesons is studied in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of 5.025.02 and 13 TeV13~{\rm TeV}, and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV8.16~{\rm TeV}. The studies are performed in center-of-mass rapidity regions 2.5<yc.m.<3.52.5<y_{\rm c.m.}<3.5 (forward rapidity) and −4.0<yc.m.<−3.0-4.0<y_{\rm c.m.}<-3.0 (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The η\eta and ηâ€Č\eta' production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for 1.5<pT<10 GeV1.5<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV} and 3<pT<10 GeV3<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}, respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for η\eta and ηâ€Č\eta' mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of η\eta mesons are also used to calculate η/π0\eta/\pi^0 cross section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average.     Amplitude analysis of the Λb0→pK−γ decay

    The resonant structure of the radiative decay Λb0→pK−γ in the region of proton-kaon invariant-mass up to 2.5 GeV/c2 is studied using proton-proton collision data recorded at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. Results are given in terms of fit and interference fractions between the different components contributing to this final state. Only Λ resonances decaying to pK− are found to be relevant, where the largest contributions stem from the Λ(1520), Λ(1600), Λ(1800), and Λ(1890) states

    Fraction of χc\chi_c decays in prompt J/ψJ/\psi production measured in pPb collisions at sNN=8.16\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16 TeV

    The fraction of χc1\chi_{c1} and χc2\chi_{c2} decays in the prompt J/ψJ/\psi yield, Fχc=σχc→J/ψ/σJ/ψF_{\chi c}=\sigma_{\chi_c \to J/\psi}/\sigma_{J/\psi}, is measured by the LHCb detector in pPb collisions at sNN=8.16\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16 TeV. The study covers the forward (1.5<y∗<4.01.5<y^*<4.0) and backward (−5.0<y∗<−2.5-5.0<y^*<-2.5) rapidity regions, where y∗y^* is the J/ψJ/\psi rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass system. Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 ±\pm 0.3 nb−1^{-1} and 20.8 ±\pm 0.5 nb−1^{-1}, respectively. The result is presented as a function of the J/ψJ/\psi transverse momentum pT,J/ψp_{T,J/\psi} in the range 1<pT,J/ψ<20<p_{T, J/\psi}<20 GeV/cc. The FχcF_{\chi c} fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV, whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 σ\sigma larger than in the forward region for 1<pT,J/ψ<31<p_{T, J/\psi}<3 GeV/cc. The increase of FχcF_{\chi c} at low pT,J/ψp_{T, J/\psi} at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the ψ\psi(2S) contribution to the prompt J/ψJ/\psi yield.     Enhanced production of Λb0\Lambda_{b}^{0} baryons in high-multiplicity pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    The production rate of Λb0\Lambda_{b}^{0} baryons relative to B0B^{0} mesons in pppp collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of Λb0\Lambda_{b}^{0} to B0B^{0} production cross-sections shows a significant dependence on both the transverse momentum and the measured charged-particle multiplicity. At low multiplicity, the ratio measured at LHCb is consistent with the value measured in e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions, and increases by a factor of ∌2\sim2 with increasing multiplicity. At relatively low transverse momentum, the ratio of Λb0\Lambda_{b}^{0} to B0B^{0} cross-sections is higher than what is measured in e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions, but converges with the e+e−e^{+}e^{-} ratio as the momentum increases. These results imply that the evolution of heavy bb quarks into final-state hadrons is influenced by the density of the hadronic environment produced in the collision.     Helium identification with LHCb

    The identification of helium nuclei at LHCb is achieved using a method based on measurements of ionisation losses in the silicon sensors and timing measurements in the Outer Tracker drift tubes. The background from photon conversions is reduced using the RICH detectors and an isolation requirement. The method is developed using pppp collision data at s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13\,{\rm TeV} recorded by the LHCb experiment in the years 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb−15.5\,{\rm fb}^{-1}. A total of around 10510^5 helium and antihelium candidates are identified with negligible background contamination. The helium identification efficiency is estimated to be approximately 50%50\% with a corresponding background rejection rate of up to O(1012)\mathcal O(10^{12}).     First observation of a doubly charged tetraquark and its neutral partner

    A combined amplitude analysis is performed for the decays B0→D‟0Ds+π−B^0 \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 D^+_s\pi^- and B+→D−Ds+π+B^+\rightarrow D^- D^+_s\pi^+, which are related by isospin symmetry. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV\,\rm{TeV}. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1\,\rm{fb^{-1}}. Two new resonant states with masses of 2.908±0.011±0.020 GeV2.908\pm0.011\pm0.020\,\rm{GeV} and widths of 0.136±0.023±0.011 GeV0.136\pm0.023\pm0.011\,\rm{GeV} are observed, which decay to Ds+π+D^+_s\pi^+ and Ds+π−D^+_s\pi^- respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content [csˉudˉ][c\bar{s}u\bar{d}], and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of [csˉuˉd][c\bar{s}\bar{u}d] quarks.
