Patterns of shallow clouds and rainfall over the Amazon : climatic impacts of deforestation

Through complex interactions, the results reported in this thesis may have important implications for the local ecosystem dynamics of the Amazon, for the geomorphology of the Amazon river basin, for the flow regimes of the Amazon river, and for global climate.The climatic impact of the current state of deforestation in the Amazon basin is examined in this thesis. Past modeling studies have shown that complete deforestation of the Amazon basin could result in dramatic decreases in regional rainfall and evaporation leading to desertification (e. g., Salati and Vose [1984], Shukla et al. [1990]). Yet, although 15% of the 4,000,000 kmÂČ Brazilian Amazon has already been deforested [INPE, 2003], current deforestation patterns in the Amazon basin are not uniform, nor do their extents surpass tens of kilometers. Numerical simulations indicate that idealized heterogeneities of land-surface properties could lead to organized mesoscale circulations that enhance convection (e. g., Anthes [1984], Chen and Avissar [1994a], Avissar and Liu [1996], Wang et al. [1998]); similar results were found in case-study simulations of actual Amazon deforestation (e. g., Wang et al. [2000], Roy and Avissar [2002]). Qualitative observations of enhanced shallow cloud cover over cleared areas have provided preliminary indications of episodic land-cover-driven mesoscale circulations in the Amazon basin (e. g., Cutrim et al. [1995], Durieux et al. [2003], Negri et al. [2004]). Based on these studies, the effects of the "fishbone" patterns of deforestation on shallow vection were thought to occur only episodically during few precious weeks toward the end of the dry season, and were largely accepted as being climatically insignificant. However, through the use of satellite data from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), this thesis quantitatively demonstrate that the complex pattern of deforestation in the Amazon has resulted in a climatic shift in shallow cloud, rainfallby FrĂ©dĂ©ric J. Two-neutron transfer reaction mechanisms in C(He,He)C using a realistic three-body He model
The reaction mechanisms of the two-neutron transfer reaction
C(He,He) have been studied at 30 MeV at the TRIUMF ISAC-II
facility using the SHARC charged-particle detector array. Optical potential
parameters have been extracted from the analysis of the elastic scattering
angular distribution. The new potential has been applied to the study of the
transfer angular distribution to the 2 8.32 MeV state in C, using
a realistic 3-body He model and advanced shell model calculations for the
carbon structure, allowing to calculate the relative contributions of the
simultaneous and sequential two-neutron transfer. The reaction model provides a
good description of the 30 MeV data set and shows that the simultaneous process
is the dominant transfer mechanism. Sensitivity tests of optical potential
parameters show that the final results can be considerably affected by the
choice of optical potentials. A reanalysis of data measured previously at 18
MeV however, is not as well described by the same reaction model, suggesting
that one needs to include higher order effects in the reaction mechanism.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
Amorphous alumina in the extended atmosphere of Alpha Orionis
In this paper we study the extended atmosphere of the late-type supergiant
Alpha Orionis. Infrared spectroscopy of red supergiants reveals strong
molecular bands, some of which do not originate in the photosphere but in a
cooler layer of molecular material above it. Lately, these layers have been
spatially resolved by near and mid-IR interferometry. In this paper, we try to
reconcile the IR interferometric and ISO-SWS spectroscopic results on Alpha
Orionis with a thorough modelling of the photosphere, molecular layer(s) and
dust shell. From the ISO and near-IR interferometric observations, we find that
Alpha Orionis has only a very low density water layer close above the
photosphere. However, mid-IR interferometric observations and a narrow-slit
N-band spectrum suggest much larger extra-photospheric opacity close to the
photosphere at those wavelengths, even when taking into account the detached
dust shell. We argue that this cannot be due to the water layer, and that
another source of mid-IR opacity must be present. We show that this opacity
source is probably neither molecular nor chromospheric. Rather, we present
amorphous alumina (Al2O3) as the best candidate and discuss this hypothesis in

This chapter describes responses to the ecological crisis and political changes in Ethiopia in the early 1990s among the Suri, an agropastoral group in Kâfa Region, southern Ethiopia. Data are derived from fieldwork carried out in the area after the change of regime in 1991. Attention is paid to environmental conditions and the Suri subsistence system, relations between the Suri and neighbouring ethnic groups, drought and famine in the area, in particular in the 1980s, and the Suri attitude towards the interventions of outside agencies, interethnic conflict in the period 1984-1993, Suri recovery and adaptation in the early 1990s, and the effects of drought, famine, and political upheaval on Suri socioeconomic organization, local political relations, and ethnic identities and interethnic relations. An Ethnohistorical Perspective on Cheyenne Demography
Administrative censuses of the Southern Cheyenne Indians from 1880,1891, and 1900 permit family reconstitution, identification of residence groups, and comparisons of fertility between monogamous and polygynous women, when the records are approached by ethnohistori cal methods. This approach includes an awareness of the aboriginal adoption practices, kinship system, and naming practices. Pyelonephritis in slaughter pigs and sows: Morphological characterization and aspects of pathogenesis and aetiology
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pyelonephritis is a serious disease in pig production that needs to be further studied. The purpose of this study was to describe the morphology, investigate the pathogenesis, and evaluate the aetiological role of <it>Escherichia coli </it>in pyelonephritis in slaughtered pigs by concurrent bacteriological, gross and histopathological examinations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From Danish abattoirs, kidneys and corresponding lymph nodes from 22 slaughtered finishing pigs and 26 slaughtered sows with pyelonephritis were collected and evaluated by bacteriology and pathology. Based on gross lesions, each kidney (lesion) was grouped as acute, chronic, chronic active, or normal and their histological inflammatory stage was determined as normal (0), acute (1), sub-acute (2), chronic active (3), or chronic (4). Immunohistochemical identification of neutrophils, macrophages, T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes, plasma cells, <it>E. coli </it>and Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP) in renal sections was performed. The number of <it>E. coli </it>and the proportion of immunohistochemically visualized leukocytes out of the total number of infiltrating leukocytes were scored semi-quantitatively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Lesions in finishing pigs and sows were similar. Macroscopically, multiple unevenly distributed foci of inflammation mostly affecting the renal poles were observed. Histologically, tubulointerstitial infiltration with neutrophils and mononuclear cells and tubular destruction was the main findings. The significant highest scores of L1 antigen<sup>+ </sup>neutrophils were in inflammatory stage 1 while the significant highest scores of CD79αcy<sup>+ </sup>B-lymphocytes, IgG<sup>+ </sup>and IgA<sup>+ </sup>plasma cells were in stage 3 or 4. Neutrophils were the dominant leukocytes in stage 1 while CD3Δ<sup>+ </sup>T-lymphocytes dominated in stage 2, 3 and 4. Interstitially THP was seen in 82% and 98% of kidneys with pyelonephritis from finishing pigs and sows, respectively. <it>E. coli </it>was demonstrated in monoculture and/or identified by immunohistochemistry in relation to inflammation in four kidneys from finishing pigs and in 34 kidneys from sows.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>E. coli </it>played a significant role in the aetiology of pyelonephritis. Neutrophils were involved in the first line of defence. CD3Δ<sup>+ </sup>T-lymphocytes were involved in both the acute and chronic inflammatory response while a humoral immune response was most pronounced in later inflammatory stages. The observed renal lesions correspond with an ascending bacterial infection with presence of intra-renal reflux.</p
Mid-infrared sizes of circumstellar disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars measured with MIDI on the VLTI
We present the first long baseline mid-infrared interferometric observations of the circumstellar disks surrounding Herbig Ae/Be stars. The observations were obtained using the mid-infrared interferometric instrument MIDI at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescope Interferometer VLTI on Cerro Paranal. The 102 m baseline given by the telescopes UT1 and UT3 was employed, which provides a maximum full spatial resolution of 20 milli-arcsec (mas) at a wavelength of 10 Όm. The interferometric signal was spectrally dispersed at a resolution of 30, giving spectrally resolved visibility information from 8 Όmâto 13.5 Όm. We observed seven nearby Herbig Ae/Be stars and resolved all objects. The warm dust disk of HD 100546 could even be resolved in single-telescope imaging. Characteristic dimensions of the emitting regions at 10 Όm are found to be from 1 AU to 10 AU. The 10 Όm sizes of our sample stars correlate with the slope of the 10â25 Όm infrared spectrum in the sense that the reddest objects are the largest ones. Such a correlation would be consistent with a different geometry in terms of flaring or flat (self-shadowed) disks for sources with strong or moderate mid-infrared excess, respectively. We compare the observed spectrally resolved visibilities with predictions based on existing models of passive centrally irradiated hydrostatic disks made to fit the SEDs of the observed stars. We find broad qualitative agreement of the spectral shape of visibilities corresponding to these models with our observations. Quantitatively, there are discrepancies that show the need for a next step in modelling of circumstellar disks, satisfying both the spatial constraints such as are now available from the MIDI observations and the flux constraints from the SEDs in a consistent way
High-precision branching-ratio measurement for the superallowed ÎČ\u3csup\u3e+\u3c/sup\u3e emitter 74Rb
A high-precision branching-ratio measurement for the superallowed ÎČ+ decay of 74Rb was performed at the TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) radioactive ion-beam facility. The scintillating electron-positron tagging array (SCEPTAR), composed of 10 thin plastic scintillators, was used to detect the emitted ÎČ particles; the 8Ï spectrometer, an array of 20 Compton-suppressed HPGe detectors, was used for detecting Îł rays that were emitted following Gamow-Teller and nonanalog Fermi ÎČ+ decays of 74Rb; and the Pentagonal Array of Conversion Electron Spectrometers (PACES), an array of 5 Si(Li) detectors, was employed for measuring ÎČ-delayed conversion electrons. Twenty-three excited states were identified in 74Kr following 8.241(4)Ă108 detected 74Rb ÎČ decays. A total of 58 Îł-ray and electron transitions were placed in the decay scheme, allowing the superallowed branching ratio to be determined as B 0=99.545(31)%. Combined with previous half-life and Q-value measurements, the superallowed branching ratio measured in this work leads to a superallowed ft value of 3082.8(65) s. Comparisons between this superallowed ft value and the world-average-corrected FtÌ value, as well as the nonanalog Fermi branching ratios determined in this work, provide guidance for theoretical models of the isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections in this mass region. © 2013 American Physical Society
