Fractal Profit Landscape of the Stock Market
We investigate the structure of the profit landscape obtained from the most
basic, fluctuation based, trading strategy applied for the daily stock price
data. The strategy is parameterized by only two variables, p and q. Stocks are
sold and bought if the log return is bigger than p and less than -q,
respectively. Repetition of this simple strategy for a long time gives the
profit defined in the underlying two-dimensional parameter space of p and q. It
is revealed that the local maxima in the profit landscape are spread in the
form of a fractal structure. The fractal structure implies that successful
strategies are not localized to any region of the profit landscape and are
neither spaced evenly throughout the profit landscape, which makes the
optimization notoriously hard and hypersensitive for partial or limited
information. The concrete implication of this property is demonstrated by
showing that optimization of one stock for future values or other stocks
renders worse profit than a strategy that ignores fluctuations, i.e., a
long-term buy-and-hold strategy.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
OGLE-2009-BLG-092/MOA-2009-BLG-137: A Dramatic Repeating Event With the Second Perturbation Predicted by Real-Time Analysis
We report the result of the analysis of a dramatic repeating gravitational
microlensing event OGLE-2009-BLG-092/MOA-2009-BLG-137, for which the light
curve is characterized by two distinct peaks with perturbations near both
peaks. We find that the event is produced by the passage of the source
trajectory over the central perturbation regions associated with the individual
components of a wide-separation binary. The event is special in the sense that
the second perturbation, occurring days after the first, was
predicted by the real-time analysis conducted after the first peak,
demonstrating that real-time modeling can be routinely done for binary and
planetary events. With the data obtained from follow-up observations covering
the second peak, we are able to uniquely determine the physical parameters of
the lens system. We find that the event occurred on a bulge clump giant and it
was produced by a binary lens composed of a K and M-type main-sequence stars.

OGLE-2005-BLG-071Lb, the Most Massive M-Dwarf Planetary Companion?
We combine all available information to constrain the nature of
OGLE-2005-BLG-071Lb, the second planet discovered by microlensing and the first
in a high-magnification event. These include photometric and astrometric
measurements from Hubble Space Telescope, as well as constraints from higher
order effects extracted from the ground-based light curve, such as microlens
parallax, planetary orbital motion and finite-source effects. Our primary
analysis leads to the conclusion that the host of Jovian planet
OGLE-2005-BLG-071Lb is an M dwarf in the foreground disk with mass M= 0.46 +/-
0.04 Msun, distance D_l = 3.3 +/- 0.4 kpc, and thick-disk kinematics v_LSR ~
103 km/s. From the best-fit model, the planet has mass M_p = 3.8 +/- 0.4 M_Jup,
lies at a projected separation r_perp = 3.6 +/- 0.2 AU from its host and so has
an equilibrium temperature of T ~ 55 K, i.e., similar to Neptune. A degenerate
model less favored by \Delta\chi^2 = 2.1 (or 2.2, depending on the sign of the
impact parameter) gives similar planetary mass M_p = 3.4 +/- 0.4 M_Jup with a
smaller projected separation, r_\perp = 2.1 +/- 0.1 AU, and higher equilibrium
temperature T ~ 71 K. These results from the primary analysis suggest that
OGLE-2005-BLG-071Lb is likely to be the most massive planet yet discovered that
is hosted by an M dwarf. However, the formation of such high-mass planetary
companions in the outer regions of M-dwarf planetary systems is predicted to be
unlikely within the core-accretion scenario. There are a number of caveats to
this primary analysis, which assumes (based on real but limited evidence) that
the unlensed light coincident with the source is actually due to the lens, that
is, the planetary host. However, these caveats could mostly be resolved by a

NELF Potentiates Gene Transcription in the Drosophila Embryo
A hallmark of genes that are subject to developmental regulation of transcriptional elongation is association of the negative elongation factor NELF with the paused RNA polymerase complex. Here we use a combination of biochemical and genetic experiments to investigate the in vivo function of NELF in the Drosophila embryo. NELF associates with different gene promoter regions in correlation with the association of RNA polymerase II (Pol II) and the initial activation of gene expression during the early stages of embryogenesis. Genetic experiments reveal that maternally provided NELF is required for the activation, rather than the repression of reporter genes that emulate the expression of key developmental control genes. Furthermore, the relative requirement for NELF is dictated by attributes of the flanking cis-regulatory information. We propose that NELF-associated paused Pol II complexes provide a platform for high fidelity integration of the combinatorial spatial and temporal information that is central to the regulation of gene expression during animal development

kaon production at energies below 2 AGeV and on partonic collectivity at RHIC

Production of phi mesons at mid-rapidity in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC
We present the first results of meson production in the K^+K^- decay channel
from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV as measured at mid-rapidity by
the PHENIX detector at RHIC. Precision resonance centroid and width values are
extracted as a function of collision centrality. No significant variation from
the PDG accepted values is observed. The transverse mass spectra are fitted
with a linear exponential function for which the derived inverse slope
parameter is seen to be constant as a function of centrality. These data are
also fitted by a hydrodynamic model with the result that the freeze-out
temperature and the expansion velocity values are consistent with the values
previously derived from fitting single hadron inclusive data. As a function of
transverse momentum the collisions scaled peripheral.to.central yield ratio RCP
for the is comparable to that of pions rather than that of protons. This result
lends support to theoretical models which distinguish between baryons and
mesons instead of particle mass for explaining the anomalous proton yield.Comment: 326 authors, 24 pages text, 23 figures, 6 tables, RevTeX 4. To be

Surgical reconstruction of the left main coronary artery with patch-angioplasty
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Conventional coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) has been established as the treatment of choice for left main coronary artery (LMCA) stenosis However, the conventional grafting provides a retrograde perfusion to extensive myocardial area and leads prospectively to competitive flow of the non-occluded coronaries thus consuming the grafts. Surgical reconstruction of the LMCA with patch-angioplasty is an alternative method that eliminates these drawbacks.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Between February 1997 and July 2007, 37 patients with isolated LMCA stenosis were referred for surgical ostial reconstruction. In 27 patients (73%) surgical angioplasties have been performed. All patients were followed up clinically and with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and coronary angiography when required.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In 10 patients (27%) a LMCA stenosis could not be confirmed. There were no early mortality or perioperative myocardial infarctions. The postoperative course was uneventful in all patients. In 25 patients, TEE demonstrated a wide open main stem flow pattern one to six months after reconstruction of the left main coronary artery with one patch mild aneurysmal dilated.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The surgical reconstruction with patch-angioplasty is a safe and effective method for the treatment of proximal and middle LMCA stenosis. Almost one third of the study group had no really LMCA stenosis: antegrade flow pattern remained sustained and the arterial grafts have been spared. In the cases of unclear or suspected LMCA stenosis, cardio-CT can be performed to unmask catheter-induced coronary spasm as the underlying reason for isolated LMCA stenosis.</p
Measurements of sideward flow around the balance energy
Sideward flow values have been determined with the INDRA multidetector for
Ar+Ni, Ni+Ni and Xe+Sn systems studied at GANIL in the 30 to 100 A.MeV incident
energy range. The balance energies found for Ar+Ni and Ni+Ni systems are in
agreement with previous experimental results and theoretical calculations.
Negative sideward flow values have been measured. The possible origins of such
negative values are discussed. They could result from a more important
contribution of evaporated particles with respect to the contribution of
promptly emitted particles at mid-rapidity. But effects induced by the methods
used to reconstruct the reaction plane cannot be totally excluded. Complete
tests of these methods are presented and the origins of the
``auto-correlation'' effect have been traced back. For heavy fragments, the
observed negative flow values seem to be mainly due to the reaction plane
reconstruction methods. For light charged particles, these negative values
could result from the dynamics of the collisions and from the reaction plane
reconstruction methods as well. These effects have to be taken into account
when comparisons with theoretical calculations are done.Comment: 27 pages, 15 figure
