    Pasteurella multocida type A as the primary agent of pneumonia and septicaemia in pigs

    Abstract: In order to understand better the pathological aspects and spread of Pasteurella multocida type A as the primary cause of pneumonia in pigs, was made an experiment with intranasal inoculation of different concentrations of inocula [Group (G1): 108 Colony Forming Units (CFU)/ml; G2: 107 CFU/ml; G3: 106 CFU/ml and G4: 105 CFU/ml], using two pigs per group. The pigs were obtained from a high health status herd. Pigs were monitored clinically for 4 days and subsequently necropsied. All pigs had clinical signs and lesions associated with respiratory disease. Dyspnoea and hyperthermia were the main clinical signs observed. Suppurative cranioventral bronchopneumonia, in some cases associated with necrosuppurative pleuropneumonia, fibrinous pericarditis and pleuritic, were the most frequent types of lesion found. The disease evolved with septicaemia, characterized by septic infarctions in the liver and spleen, with the detection of P. multocida type A. In this study, P. multocida type A strain #11246 was the primary agent of fibrinous pleuritis and suppurative cranioventral bronchopneumonia, pericarditis and septicaemia in the pigs. All concentrations of inoculum used (105-108 CFU/ml) were able to produce clinical and pathological changes of pneumonia, pleuritis, pericarditis and septicemia in challenged animals

    As enterites infecciosas bacterianas provocam severas perdas para a indĂșstria suĂ­na em todo o mundo. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram determinar os agentes bacterianos, associados com a ocorrĂȘncia de diarrĂ©ia em suĂ­nos, em diferentes faixas etĂĄrias, no Estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil, e verificar o perfil de resistĂȘncia das cepas de Escherichia coli e Salmonella spp, frente aos principais antimicrobianos utilizados em granjas de suĂ­nos. Os principais gĂȘneros/espĂ©cies bacterianos diagnosticados foram Escherichia coli, Clostridium spp, Salmonella spp Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, Brachyspira pilosicoli e Lawsonia intracellularis. Os fatores de virulĂȘncia de E. coli mais prevalentes na fase de maternidade foram F5 / (K99) 20%, F6 / (987P) 16,3%, F42 6,8% e F41 5,7%, jĂĄ nas fases de creche e terminação, predominaram cepas com fimbrias F4 (K88) 11,2% e 5,4%, respectivamente. Para E. coli os maiores Ă­ndices de resistĂȘncia foram encontrados para oxitetraciclina (94%) e tetraciclina (89,5%) e os menores Ă­ndices de resistĂȘncia para neomicina (55%), ceftiofur (57,4%). Quanto Ă s amostras de Salmonella spp, estas apresentaram maior resistĂȘncia Ă  oxitetraciclina (77%), e Ă  tetraciclina (42,1%) e menor Ă  gentamicina (3,5%) e amoxicilina (4,8%).<br>Infectious bacterial enteritis causes severe losses to the swine industry worldwide. The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiology of bacterial agents that are associated with the occurrence of diarrhea in pigs at different age groups, and to verify the profile of resistance of strains of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp to the main antimicrobial agents. The main bacterial species diagnosed were Escherichia coli, Clostridium spp, Salmonella spp, Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, Brachyspira pilosicoli and Lawsonia intracellularis. The E. coli virulence factors of higher prevalence in preweaning piglets were F5 / (K99) 20%, F6 / (987P) 16.3%, F42 6.8% and F41 5.7%, whereas at the nursery and with finishing pigs, the prevalent strain was the fimbria F4 (K88) 11.2% e 5.4%, respectively. E. coli and Salmonella spp were highly resistant to oxytetracycline (94%) and tetracycline (90%), with the former having a low resistance to neomycin (55%) and ceftiofur (57%), and the latter to gentamicin (3.5%) and amoxicillin (4.8%)

    PURPOSE: We aimed to determine the prevalence and phenotypic spectrum of NOTCH1 mutations in left-sided congenital heart disease (LS-CHD). LS-CHD includes aortic valve stenosis, a bicuspid aortic valve, coarctation of the aorta, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. METHODS: NOTCH1 was screened for mutations in 428 nonsyndromic probands with LS-CHD, and family histories were obtained for all. When a mutation was detected, relatives were also tested. RESULTS: In 148/428 patients (35%), LS-CHD was familial. Fourteen mutations (3%; 5 RNA splicing mutations, 8 truncating mutations, 1 whole-gene deletion) were detected, 11 in familial disease (11/148 (7%)) and 3 in sporadic disease (3/280 (1%)). Forty-nine additional mutation carriers were identified among the 14 families, of whom 12 (25%) were asymptomatic. Most of these mutation carriers had LS-CHD, but 9 (18%) had right-sided congenital heart disease (RS-CHD) or conotruncal heart disease (CTD). Thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) occurred in 6 mutation carriers (probands included 6/63 (10%)). CONCLUSION: Pathogenic mutations in NOTCH1 were identified in 7% of familial LS-CHD and in 1% of sporadic LS-CHD. The penetrance is high; a cardiovascular malformation was found in 75% of NOTCH1 mutation carriers. The phenotypic spectrum includes LS-CHD, RS-CHD, CTD, and TAA. Testing NOTCH1 for an early diagnosis in LS-CHD/RS-CHD/CTD/TAA is warranted

    Transverse momentum spectra of charged particles in proton–proton collisions at √s=900 GeV with ALICE at the LHC

    The inclusive charged particle transverse momentum distribution is measured in proton–proton collisions at s=900 GeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region (|η|<0.8) over the transverse momentum range 0.15<pT<10 GeV/c. The correlation between transverse momentum and particle multiplicity is also studied. Results are presented for inelastic (INEL) and non-single-diffractive (NSD) events. The average transverse momentum for |η|<0.8 is 〈pT〉INEL=0.483±0.001 (stat.)±0.007 (syst.) GeV/c and 〈pT〉NSD=0.489±0.001 (stat.)±0.007 (syst.) GeV/c, respectively. The data exhibit a slightly larger 〈pT〉 than measurements in wider pseudorapidity intervals. The results are compared to simulations with the Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA and PHOJET
