Bibliografia: p. 54-61"Paper prepared for the 21st FMM (Forum for Macroeconomics and Macroeconomic Policies) Conference: “The Crisis of Globalization” in Berlin, Germany, 9-11 November, 2017, and also presented at the 3rd Iberoamerican Socioeconomic Meeting of Society for the Advancement of Socioeconomics (Sase) in Cartagenas de Indias, Colombia, 16-18 November, 2017, and at the 5th Global Conference on Economic Geography 2018 in Cologne, Germany, 24-28 July, 2018. The first draft of this paper was prepared when one of its authors (André Nassif) still worked at BNDES as a professional economist. He retired from BNDES in December, 2016. The authors thank Filipe Lage de Souza for helpful comments and suggestions."Inclui apêndices: 1. Concluding remarks -- References -- Appendix 1 -- Appendix 2Globalization can be defined as the extent and intensity with which a country’s production, trade and capital flows are integrated in the world economy. Our focus is on the globalization through international trade flows. After analyzing the main theoretical predictions about the effects of global trade integration on trade patterns between countries of different levels of income and technology, this paper investigates the case of Brazil, focusing on its trade integration over the last 26 years (1990-2016). Particularly, we are interested in investigating whether or not (and if so, to what extent) Brazil’s recent trajectory has been directed to a regressive pattern of specialization. By regressive specialization we refer to that in which both production and export structures are strongly oriented to goods of low technological sophistication and low income-elasticity of demand. The recent theoretical literature on technological gaps and long-term growth suggests that, when a country enters into a quick and sustained regressive pattern of specialization, its capacity of showing growth rates aligned with its balance-of-payment equilibrium is reduced and, therefore, a falling behind trajectory is observed. Our main empirical findings are: (i) the technological gap significantly widened for all groups of manufactured goods classified by factor content and technological sophistication; (ii) the income elasticity of demand for Brazilian exports is greater than for Brazilian imports, suggesting a regressive specialization concentrated in low-tech goods and implying that growth has been constrained by long-term balance-of-payments equilibrium (Thirlwall’s Law); and (iii) a very marked trend of high concentration of Brazilian exports in primary goods, but a more diversified basket of imports composed of high technologically sophisticated manufactured goods, reinforcing the regressive specialization of Brazil’s trade pattern in the last decades

In a national context marked by a denialist position of the federal government in the fight against the pandemic, Brazil is among the countries most affected by Covid-19. The present study analyzes, along with other socioeconomic, health and demographic factors, how the political orientation of municipalities is related to the mortality rate. In order to analyze two different transmission channels between political factors and mortality, two other econometric models were estimated on the mobility of people and the vaccination rate. One of the most striking results concerns the “Bolsonaro effect”: mortality rates are higher in the municipalities where the president had a more expressive vote in the 2018 elections. The results regarding population mobility seem to confirm that this is one of the main mechanisms of disease transmission. Nevertheless, the political denialist position does not seem to compromise, at least for the first months of the late immunization process in Brazil, the complete vaccination.O Brasil está entre os países mais atingidos pela Covid-19, em um contexto nacional marcado por um posicionamento negacionista do governo federal no combate à pandemia.

Brazilian exports of manufactured goods have a high geographical specialization, both concerning trade volume, sectoral composition and product sophistication. Latin America became since the 90s the main market for Brazilian manufacturing exports, besides having increased the degree of productive articulation. However, during the 2000s, Brazil has been losing its market share in the region due to the loss of Brazilian goods competitiveness face to the deepening of the Chinese competition and the erosion of regional trade preferences. This paper analyzes the performance and perspectives of Brazilian manufactured exports using trade indicators (market share and similarities of exports structure) that capture the exports specialization and the productive integration of Brazil according to its chief trade partners. Such an analysis shows the relevance of the regional market for the Brazilian manufactured products, despite the loss of Brazil's market share in Latin American countries. In order to understand the causes of this recent trajectory, this paper is going to examine the gains and losses for Brazil regarding the Chinese competition in Latin American Integration Association (LAIA) countries, adopting a modified methodology of constant market share (CMS).As exportações brasileiras de produtos manufaturados apresentam uma especialização geográfica bem demarcada, tanto em termos de volume quanto de composição e grau de sofisticação dos produtos.

In the present study, we verified the influence of alloxan over the cells of pancreatic islet of rats, performing quantitative analysis of a, b and d  cells through immunohistochemical study. Twenty male rats (Rattus norvegiccus) were used of Wistar line, disposed in 2 groups of 10 rats on each, being a control group and an experimental one. After fasting of 36 hours, 40 ml/Kg of monohydrated of alloxan was administrated by intravenous via and about 30 minutes after, the animal was offered food. At the end of 10 days of observation, animals were sacrificed. Samples of different regions of pancreas were selected and undergone to a histological process and stained with hematoxilin-eosin. To the immunohistochemical study, anti-insulin, anti-glucagon and anti-somatostatin antibodies were used. Quantitative analysis was performed in eight most representative pancreatic islets of each animal. Results were considered significative when p<0.05. There was a significative reduction in the number of cells, destructing the islets and over the pancreatic-cells, which has already been observed in other studies. However, the action mechanism of alloxan over the pancreatic cells was not completely shown, therefore having necessity of more studies to its elucidation. In the present study, we verified the influence of alloxan over the cells of pancreatic islet of rats, performing quantitative analysis of Twenty male rats (Rattus norvegiccus) were used of Wistar line, disposed in 2 groups of 10 rats on each, being a control group and an experimental one. Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science. In the future, humanity can benefit greatly by nurturing the grassroots communities now collectively capable of generating unique, long-term understanding of Earth's most precious forests.Additional co-authors: Susan Laurance, William Laurance, Francoise Yoko Ishida, Andrew Marshall, Catherine Waite, Hannsjoerg Woell, Jean-Francois Bastin, Marijn Bauters, Hans Beeckman, Pfascal Boeckx, Jan Bogaert, Charles De Canniere, Thales de Haulleville, Jean-Louis Doucet, Olivier Hardy, Wannes Hubau, Elizabeth Kearsley, Hans Verbeeck, Jason Vleminckx, Steven W.
