    Get PDF

Phenomenological implications from moduli fields in strings

We study some phenomenological consequences of having moduli fields with large vacuum expectation values (v.e.v.). The v.e.vs of the moduli are dynamically determined once supersymmetry is broken in 4D string theories. The study constraints the possible Yukawa interactions and modular weights for matter fields.Comment: 9 pages (LaTeX), Oxford preprint OUTP-93-34

    Extended Inflation from Strings

We study the possibility of extended inflation in the effective theory of gravity from strings compactified to four dimensions and find that it strongly depends on the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking. We consider a general class of string--inspired models which are good candidates for successful extended inflation. In particular, the ω\omega--problem of ordinary extended inflation is automatically solved by the production of only very small bubbles until the end of inflation. We find that the inflaton field could belong either to the untwisted or to the twisted massless sectors of the string spectrum, depending on the supersymmetry breaking superpotential.Comment: 18p

A natural solution to the μ\mu-problem in dynamical supergravity model

    Get PDF
The Higgs mixing term coefficient μ\mu is calculated in the supersymmetric theory which possesses a non-anomalous U(1)RU(1)_{R} symmetry in the limit of global supersymmetry. In this model, supersymmetry is assumed to be broken by gaugino condensation in the hidden sector when the supergravity effects are turned on. The soft breaking terms in the visible sector and the μ\mu term of order the weak scale are produced in a simple manner.Comment: 6 pages, Latex, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.

On spaces with star kernel Menger

Given a topological property P\mathcal{P}, a space XX is called star-P\mathcal{P} if for any open cover U\mathcal{U} of the space XX, there exists a set YXY\subseteq X with property P\mathcal{P} such that St(Y,U)=XSt(Y,\mathcal{U})=X; the set YY is called a star kernel of the cover U\mathcal{U}. In this paper, we introduce and study spaces with star kernel Menger, that is, star Menger spaces. Some examples are given to show the relationship with some other related properties studied previously, and the behaviour of the star Menger property with respect to subspaces, products, continuous images and preimages are investigated. Additionally, some comments on the star selection theory are given. Particularly, some questions posed by Song within this theory are addressed. Finally, several new properties are introduced as well as some general questions on them are posed

    Unification Scale in String Theory

We study the unification scale and gauge coupling constant in 4D string theory. We show that the fine structure constant is determined by the dimension of the hidden gauge group and only SU(6)SU(6) and SO(9)SO(9) are consistent with minimal string unification while the unification scale can be of order of 1016GeV10^{16}\,GeV.Comment: 12 pages (LaTeX

    Challenges for Superstring Cosmology

    Get PDF
We consider whether current notions about superstring theory below the Planck scale are compatible with cosmology. We find that the anticipated form for the dilaton interaction creates a serious roadblock for inflation and makes it unlikely that the universe ever reaches a state with zero cosmological constant and time-independent gravitational constant.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures available as eps files on reques
