Acquisition scenario analysis for face recognition at a distance

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-17289-2_44Proceedings of 6th International Symposium, ISVC 2010, Las Vegas, NV, (USA)An experimental analysis of three acquisition scenarios for face recognition at a distance is reported, namely: close, medium, and far distance between camera and query face, the three of them considering templates enrolled in controlled conditions. These three representative scenarios are studied using data from the NIST Multiple Biometric Grand Challenge, as the first step in order to understand the main variability factors that affect face recognition at a distance based on realistic yet workable and widely available data. The scenario analysis is conducted quantitatively in two ways. First, we analyze the information content in segmented faces in the different scenarios. Second, we analyze the performance across scenarios of three matchers, one commercial, and two other standard approaches using popular features (PCA and DCT) and matchers (SVM and GMM). The results show to what extent the acquisition setup impacts on the verification performance of face recognition at a distance. This work has been partially supported by projects Bio-Challenge (TEC2009-11186), Contexts (S2009/TIC-1485), TeraSense (CSD2008-00068) and "Cátedra UAM-Telefónica"

La construcción mediática de la comunidad política: la prensa en la transición española a la democracia

    Get PDF

The influence of recycled aggregates from precast elements on the mechanical properties of structural self-compacting concrete

Recycled Aggregates (RA) from structural precast elements and the performance of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) containing RA in percentage substitutions of 20%, 50% and 100% are described in this paper. Three Control Concretes (CC-30, CC-37.5, CC-45) manufactured with Natural Aggregates (NA), and their corresponding Recycled Aggregate Concretes (RAC-20, RAC-50, RAC-100) are evaluated in terms of physical and mechanical properties. The in-fresh properties results (flowability, viscosity and passing ability) of the RAC were suitable for their use as SSC. Furthermore, the tests of compressive, splitting tensile and flexural strength, as well as density, porosity, water absorption, ultrasonic pulse velocity, stiffness, and both dynamic and static modulus provided results close to those of the SCC with NA, and in compliance with the requirements of current regulations. The recycling process that takes place in the precast factory supposes an economical improvement and an important contribution to global sustainability, in accordance with the concept of the circular economy. The authors wish to express their gratitude for having contributed to the financing of this research to: Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) for funding UIC-231 through project BU119P17; MINECO for funding through project BIA2014-55576-C2-1-R; and FEDER (European Regional Development Funds). Moreover, we are grateful to the precast concrete company Artepref for having collaborated with the present research work

The feed represent over 65% of production costs, so should be established as a priority. It is not enough that a diet meets the nutritional needs of pigs, the ration formulation must right with official regulations governing each country for the use and manufacture of feed. Also, the feed should be easy to preserve and supplying, taking into the wide variety to installations (feeders and drinkers) used in various stages of pigs. However, the fundamental objective of the formulation of a diet is that it contains the necessary nutrients in the correct proportions and balance, considering the physiological stage, weight, age, sex, genetic potential, health status, season and production objectives with a the legal constraints. Once accomplished the formulation, the next step will be insure preparing the feed under conditions that ensure the safety, traceability and lower cost of the same. To this challenge, is adding the need to the right with environmental regulations related to feed and animal welfare.

Study of 11 September 2004 hailstorm event using radar identification of 2-D systems and 3-D cells

The most important hail event recorded in the region of the Ebro Valley (NE Spain) in 2004 was the 11 September episode. Large hailstones (some of them with a diameter of over 30 mm) caused important damages in agriculture and properties. The hail event affected an area of 3848 ha and was caused by several multicellular systems. The aim of this paper is the analysis of the associated convective structures using the meteorological radar as well as the MM5 mesoscale model, thermodynamic data and a hailpad network. To achieve this end, the new hailstorm analysis tool RHAP (Rainfall events and Hailstorms Analysis Program) has been applied. It identifies tracks and characterises precipitation systems and convective cells, taking into account 2-D and 3-D structures. The event has also been studied with the TITAN software (Thunderstorm Identification, Tracking, Analysis and Nowcasting) in an attempt to compare both methods. Results show that the episode had a strong convective activity with CAPE values over 4000 J/kg and with hail-forming cells characterised by VIL (Vertical Integrated Liguid) exceeding 40 kg/m2, VILD (VIL density) over 4 g/m3, HP (Hail Probability) of 100% and SHP (Severe Hail Probability) of over 75%. The hail cells evolved into multicellular systems that lasted between 70 and 90 min. Finally, the comparison of RHAP and TITAN has shown significant correlations between methods

Entanglement of superconducting qubits via acceleration radiation

    Get PDF
We show that simulated relativistic motion can generate entanglement between artificial atoms and protect them from spontaneous emission. We consider a pair of superconducting qubits coupled to a resonator mode, where the modulation of the coupling strength can mimic the harmonic motion of the qubits at relativistic speeds, generating acceleration radiation. We find the optimal feasible conditions for generating a stationary entangled state between the qubits when they are initially prepared in their ground state. Furthermore, we analyse the effects of motion on the probability of spontaneous emission in the standard scenarios of single-atom and two-atom superradiance, where one or two excitations are initially present. Finally, we show that relativistic motion induces sub-radiance and can generate a Zeno-like effect, preserving the excitations from radiative decay. This work was supported by a UPV/EHU PhD grant, UPV/EHU EHUA15/17, UPV/EHU UFI 11/55, Spanish MINECO/FEDER FIS2015-69983-P and FIS2015-70856-P, Basque Government grant IT986-16, CAM PRICYT Project QUITEMAD + S2013/ICE-2801, University Sorbonne Paris Cite EQDOL contract, and Fundacion General CSIC (Programa ComFuturo)
