    Exploring NLS1 through the physical properties of their hosts

    In this work we aim at addressing the still open question about the nature of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies: are they really active nuclei with lower mass Black-Holes (BHs) than Seyfert 1 (S1) and quasars? Our approach is based on the recently discovered physical connections between nuclear supermassive BHs and their hosting spheroids (spiral bulges or ellipticals). In particular we compare BH masses of NLS1s and S1s analyzing the properties of their hosts by means of spectroscopic and photometric data in the optical wavelength domain. We find that NLS1s fill the low BH mass and bulge luminosity values of the BH mass - bulge magnitude relation, a result strongly suggesting that NLS1s are active nuclei where less massive BHs are hosted by less massive bulges. The correlation is good with a relatively small scatter fitting simultaneously NLS1s, S1s and quasars. On the other hand, NLS1s seem to share the same stellar velocity dispersion range of S1s in the BH mass - stellar velocity dispersion relation, indicating that NLS1s have a smaller BH/bulge mass ratio than S1s. These two conflicting results support in any case the idea that NLS1s could be young S1s. Finally we do not confirm the significantly non linear BH--bulge relation claimed by some authors

    The release of PGF2 alpha and PGE2, progesterone, androgens and oestradiol in vitro, and the aromatase activity in the brain of the male lizard Podarcis sicula sicula during three different phases of the reproductive period were evaluated. In addition, the effects of salmon GnRH, substance P, salmon GnRH antagonist, substance P antagonist, PGF2 alpha, PGE2 and acetylsalicylic acid on the release of prostaglandins and sex steroids and on aromatase activity in the brain were evaluated during the same three phases. PGF2 alpha, oestradiol and aromatase activity were higher during the refractory phase, androgens during the fighting phase, and progesterone during the mating phase, while PGE2 was lower during the refractory phase. Treatment with salmon GnRH increased PGF2 alpha, oestradiol and aromatase activity, but decreased the amount of androgens released. Substance P decreased PGF2 alpha, oestradiol and aromatase activity, but increased the amount of androgens released. PGF2 alpha increased oestradiol and aromatase activity, but decreased the amount of androgens released. Acetylsalicylic acid decreased PGF2 alpha, oestradiol and aromatase activity, but increased the amount of androgens released. These data suggest that salmon GnRH and substance P have different roles in reproductive processes, with opposite mechanisms, in the central nervous system of this male lizard: salmon GnRH seems to be involved in regulating the refractory phase, while substance P plays a role in regulating the fighting phase

    Gulf of Naples Advanced Model (GNAM): A Multiannual Comparison with Coastal HF Radar Data and Hydrological Measurements in a Coastal Tyrrhenian Basin

    High-resolution modelling systems have increasingly become an essential requirement to investigate ocean dynamics over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, and to integrate the punctual ocean observations. When applied in coastal areas, they also have the potential to provide a detailed representation of transport and exchange processes at the sub-basin scale. This paper presents a validation exercise between the surface fields generated by the regional ocean modeling system (ROMS), developed for the Tyrrhenian Sea and downscaled for the Gulf of Naples (GNAM Gulf of Naples advanced model), and a 4 year-long (2009–2012) record of high-frequency radar (HFR) data. The comparison between hourly and seasonal model results and HFR surface fields is focused on the Gulf of Naples (GoN), where an observational network of three HFR sites has been operational since 2004, and on a specific subdomain characterized by the presence of the Sarno river, a long-term ecological research station (LTER-MC) and one important canyon area. An evaluation on a transect delimiting inshore–offshore zones in the GoN is also presented. The GNAM model was also compared with in situ hydrological parameters of temperatures and salinities retrieved at the LTER-MC fixed monitoring station. According to the skill metrics, basic circulation features are accurately reproduced by the circulation model, despite some model drawbacks in terms of increment of energy content in the surface current field occurring during specific seasonal events. The results allow us to identify potential model errors and to suggest useful improvements, the outcome also confirms the unique capability of HF radar systems to provide fine-scale measurements for the validation of numerical models and to counterbalance the lack of high-resolution measurements in coastal areas. © 2022 by the authors

    Optical Monitoring of 3C 390.3 from 1995 to 2004 and Possible Periodicities in the Historical Light Curve

    We report V, R, and I band CCD photometry of the radio galaxy 3C 390.3 obtained with the 1.56-m telescope of the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory from March 1995 to August 2004. Combining these data with data from the literature, we have constructed a historical light curve from 1894 to 2004 and searched for periodicities using the CLEANest program. We find possible periods of 8.30+-1.17, 5.37+-0.49, 3.51+-0.21, and 2.13+-0.08 years.Comment: Accepted by AJ, 34 pages, 11 figure

    3D Spectroscopic Study of the Line Emitting Regions of Mrk 493

    We report the results of 3D spectroscopic observations of Mrk 493 (NLS1 galaxy) with the integral-field spectrograph MPFS of the SAO RAS 6-m telescope. The difference in the slope of the optical continuum emission intensity across the nucleus part and an extensive continuum emission region} is detected. The emission in lines (Hα\alpha, Hβ\beta, [OIII], etc.) coincides with a composite nuclear region: an AGN plus a circum-nuclear star-forming ring observed in the HST UV/optical images. The [SII] emission region tends to be up to 1kpc around the center. The Hα\alpha and Hβ\beta could be decomposed into three components (broad \sim 2000 km/s. intermediate \sim 700 km/s and narrow \sim 250 km/s). We found that width (\sim 750 km/s) of the Fe II lines correspond to the intermediate component, that may indicate a non-BLR origin of the Fe II lines, or that a large fraction of the Fe II emission arise in the outher parts of the BLR. The weak broad component detected in the Hα\alpha, Hβ\beta and Heλ\lambda4686 may come from the unresolved central BLR, but also partly produced by violent starburst in the circum-nuclear ring. Moreover, diagnostic diagrams clearly show presence of the HII regions (not a Sy 1 nucleus) in the NLR of Mrk 493.Comment: accepted in A

    The CaT strength in Seyfert nuclei revisited: analyzing young stars and non-stellar light contributions to the spectra

    In a former paper (Garcia-Rissmann et al. 2005; hereafter Paper I), we have presented spectra of 64 active, 9 normal and 5 Starburst galaxies in the region around the near-IR Calcium triplet absorption lines and the [SIII]9069 line. In the present paper we analyze the CaT strength (WCaT), and kinematical products derived in that study, namely stellar and ionized gas velocity dispersions. Our main results may be summarized as follows: (1) Seyfert 2s show no sign of dilution in WCaT with respect to the values spanned by normal galaxies, even when optical absorption lines such as the CaII K band at 3933 A are much weaker than in old, bulge-like stellar populations. (2) The location of Seyfert 2s in the WCaT-WCaK plane is consistent with evolutionary synthesis models. The implication is that the source responsible for the dilution of optical lines in these AGN is a young stellar population, rather than an AGN featureless continuum, confirming the conclusion of the pioneer study of Terlevich, Diaz & Terlevich. (3) In Seyfert 1s, both W[SIII] and WCaT tend to be diluted due to the presence of a non-stellar component, in agreement with the unification paradigm. (4) A comparison of stellar and gas velocity dispersions confirms the existence of a correlation between the typical velocities of stars and clouds of the Narrow Line Region. The strength and scatter around this correlation are similar to those previously obtained from the [OIII]5007 line width.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures. Paper accepted for publication in MNRA

    Protein kinase A negatively regulates Ca2+ signalling in Toxoplasma gondii.

    The phylum Apicomplexa comprises a group of obligate intracellular parasites that alternate between intracellular replicating stages and actively motile extracellular forms that move through tissue. Parasite cytosolic Ca2+ signalling activates motility, but how this is switched off after invasion is complete to allow for replication to begin is not understood. Here, we show that the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase A catalytic subunit 1 (PKAc1) of Toxoplasma is responsible for suppression of Ca2+ signalling upon host cell invasion. We demonstrate that PKAc1 is sequestered to the parasite periphery by dual acylation of PKA regulatory subunit 1 (PKAr1). Upon genetic depletion of PKAc1 we show that newly invaded parasites exit host cells shortly thereafter, in a perforin-like protein 1 (PLP-1)-dependent fashion. Furthermore, we demonstrate that loss of PKAc1 prevents rapid down-regulation of cytosolic [Ca2+] levels shortly after invasion. We also provide evidence that loss of PKAc1 sensitises parasites to cyclic GMP (cGMP)-induced Ca2+ signalling, thus demonstrating a functional link between cAMP and these other signalling modalities. Together, this work provides a new paradigm in understanding how Toxoplasma and related apicomplexan parasites regulate infectivity

    On the cosmic evolution of the scaling relations between black holes and their host galaxies: Broad Line AGN in the zCOSMOS survey

    (Abriged) We report on the measurement of the rest frame K-band luminosity and total stellar mass of the hosts of 89 broad line Active Galactic Nuclei detected in the zCOSMOS survey in the redshift range 1<z<2.2. The unprecedented multiwavelength coverage of the survey field allows us to disentangle the emission of the host galaxy from that of the nuclear black hole in their Spectral Energy Distributions. We derive an estimate of black hole masses through the analysis of the broad Mg II emission lines observed in the medium-resolution spectra taken with VIMOS/VLT as part of the zCOSMOS project. We found that, as compared to the local value, the average black hole to host galaxy mass ratio appears to evolve positively with redshift, with a best fit evolution of the form (1+z)^{0.68 \pm0.12 +0.6 -0.3}, where the large asymmetric systematic errors stem from the uncertainties in the choice of IMF, in the calibration of the virial relation used to estimate BH masses and in the mean QSO SED adopted. A thorough analysis of observational biases induced by intrinsic scatter in the scaling relations reinforces the conclusion that an evolution of the MBH-M* relation must ensue for actively growing black holes at early times: either its overall normalization, or its intrinsic scatter (or both) appear to increase with redshift. This can be interpreted as signature of either a more rapid growth of supermassive black holes at high redshift, a change of structural properties of AGN hosts at earlier times, or a significant mismatch between the typical growth times of nuclear black holes and host galaxies.Comment: 47 pages, 8 figures.     New photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 315

    We present new important results about the intermediate-type Seyfert galaxy Mrk 315, recently observed through optical imaging and integral-field spectroscopy. Broad-band images were used to study the morphology of the host galaxy, narrow-band H-alpha images to trace the star forming regions, and middle-band [O III] images to evidence the distribution of the highly ionised gas. Some extended emission regions were isolated and their physical properties studied by means of flux calibrated spectra. High resolution spectroscopy was used to separate different kinematic components in the velocity fields of gas and stars. Some peculiar features characterise this apparently undisturbed and moderately isolated active galaxy. Such features, already investigated by other authors, are re-analysed and discussed in the light of these new observations. The most relevant results we obtained are: the multi-tiers structure of the disc; the presence of a quasi-ring of regions with star formation much higher than previous claims; a secondary nucleus confirmed by a stellar component kinematically decoupled by the main galaxy; a new hypothesis about the controversial nature of the long filament, initially described as hook-shaped, and more likely made of two independent filaments caused by interaction events between the main galaxy and two dwarf companions.Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures (7 figures in jpeg format), accepted for publication in MNRA
