    Cereal grain, rachis and pulse seed amino acid δ15N values as indicators of plant nitrogen metabolism

    AbstractNatural abundance δ15N values of plant tissue amino acids (AAs) reflect the cycling of N into and within plants, providing an opportunity to better understand environmental and anthropogenic effects on plant metabolism. In this study, the AA δ15N values of barley (Hordeum vulgare) and bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) grains and rachis and broad bean (Vicia faba) and pea (Pisum sativum) seeds, grown at the experimental farm stations of Rothamsted, UK and Bad Lauchstädt, Germany, were determined by GC–C–IRMS. It was found that the δ15N values of cereal grain and rachis AAs could be largely attributed to metabolic pathways involved in their biosynthesis and catabolism. The relative 15N-enrichment of phenylalanine can be attributed to its involvement in the phenylpropanoid pathway and glutamate has a δ15N value which is an average of the other AAs due to its central role in AA–N cycling. The relative AA δ15N values of broad bean and pea seeds were very different from one another, providing evidence for differences in the metabolic routing of AAs to the developing seeds in these leguminous plants. This study has shown that AA δ15N values relate to known AA biosynthetic pathways in plants and thus have the potential to aid understanding of how various external factors, such as source of assimilated N, influence metabolic cycling of N within plants

    Assessment of accuracy and applicability of a portable electronic diary card spirometer for asthma treatment

    AbstractA pocked-sized turbine flowmeter and spirometer device, integrated with an electronic diary card (EDC-spirometer, Micro Medical, U.K.), was tested with a mechanical calibrator, in an outpatient clinic and in the home situation. A screen pneumotachometer was used as flow and volume reference.Ten devices were tested; interdevice variability was small with a mean variation coefficient of 1·1% for both forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) (sd 0·5 and 0·4, respectively) for eight settings of the calibrator. Mean difference from reference was −0·131 (sd 0·04) for FEV1 (range 0·38–3·16) and 0·091 s−1 (sd 0·09) for PEF (range 4·2–11·7). No significant deviation from linearity was present.Results obtained in the outpatient clinic confirmed the accuracy of FEV1 and PEF data obtained with the calibrator. However, linear regression analysis showed a mean underestimation of 0·451 (sd of estimate 0·29) for forced vital capacity over the whole measurement range, probably due to a restricted integration time.In 10 optimally-treated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in a family practice, PEF measurements were done in the home situation, both with the EDC spirometer and a mini-Wright peak flow meter. No significant differences in the diurnal variation of PEF were found. The PEF data from the mini-Wright meter were corrected for earlier reported flow-dependent systematic deviations. In the home situation, patients preferred the EDC spirometer. It is concluded that this device is applicable in the follow-up and treatment of asthma at home

    Agricultural productivity in past societies: toward an empirically informed model for testing cultural evolutionary hypotheses

    Agricultural productivity, and its variation in space and time, plays a fundamental role in many theories of human social evolution. However, we often lack systematic information about the productivity of past agricultural systems on a scale large enough to test these theories properly. The effect of climate on crop yields has received a great deal of attention resulting in a range of empirical and process-based models, yet the focus has primarily been on current or future conditions. In this paper, we argue for a “bottom-up” approach that estimates potential productivity based on information about the agricultural practices and technologies used in past societies. Of key theoretical interest is using this information to estimate the carrying high quality historical and archaeological information about past societies in order to infer the temporal and geographic patterns of change in agricultural productivity and potential. We discuss information we need to collect about past agricultural techniques and practices, and introduce a new databank initiative that we have developed for collating the best available historical and archaeological evidence. A key benefit of our approach lies in making explicit the steps in the estimation of past productivities and carrying capacities, and in being able to assess the effects of different modelling assumptions. This is undoubtedly an ambitious task, yet promises to provide important insights into fundamental aspects of past societies, enabling us to test more rigorously key hypotheses about human socio-cultural evolution

    Correction factors for oxygen and flow-rate effects on neonatal Fleisch and Lilly pneumotachometers

    Objective: To assess the effects of different oxygen concentrations and flow rates on the measurement errors of neonatal pneumotachometers in heated and unheated situations and to develop correction factors to correct for these effects. Design: Prospective laboratory study. Setting: Outpatient clinic with equipment in a standardized setting. Subjects: Neonatal pneumotachometers. Interventions: In standardized conditions, the tested pneumotachometer was calibrated at a flow rate of 3 L/min with 60% oxygen and was set in series with a closed spirometer system being used as a reference. Different air-flow levels (1-9 L/min) and oxygen concentrations (21-100%) were infused into the closed system with the pneumotachometer and spirometer. Measurements and Main Results: The pneumotachometers were significantly affected by changing oxygen concentrations (p < .01) and increasing flow rates (p < .01), increasing the actually measured flow rate. Correction factors, developed by multiple regression analysis, significantly reduced the overall maximum errors of the pneumotachometers from -1.1 to 0.6 L/min to -0.5 to 0.4 L/min. Conclusions: The effects of changes in oxygen concentrations and flow rates on neonatal pneumotachometers could be considerably decreased by the use of correction factors such as were calculated in this study.     Divergent mathematical treatments in utility theory

    In this paper I study how divergent mathematical treatments affect mathematical modelling, with a special focus on utility theory. In particular I examine recent work on the ranking of information states and the discounting of future utilities, in order to show how, by replacing the standard analytical treatment of the models involved with one based on the framework of Nonstandard Analysis, diametrically opposite results are obtained. In both cases, the choice between the standard and nonstandard treatment amounts to a selection of set-theoretical parameters that cannot be made on purely empirical grounds. The analysis of this phenomenon gives rise to a simple logical account of the relativity of impossibility theorems in economic theory, which concludes the paper

    A thematic analysis into the experiences of people with a mild intellectual disability during the COVID-19 lockdown period

    Background. The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to have a substantial impact on people with an intellectual disability. The goal of the current study was to explore the experiences and needs of people with a mild intellectual disability during the COVID-19 lockdown period in the Netherlands. Method. A descriptive qualitative methodology was conducted, using semi-structured individual interviews with six people with a mild intellectual disability. Data were analysed thematically. Results. Three overarching themes were found: (i) Missing social contact and having people close; (ii) Being housebound has changed my daily life; and (iii) Hard to understand the preventive measures. Conclusions. Important insights into the experiences and needs of people with a mild intellectual disability during the COVID-19 lockdown period were gained. These insights are valuable with respect to a potential second COVID-19 wave or a future infection-outbreak

    The early Neolithic of Iraqi Kurdistan: current research at Bestansur, Shahrizor Plain

    Human communities made the transition from hunter-foraging to more sedentary agriculture and herding at multiple locations across Southwest Asia through the Early Neolithic period (ca. 10,000-7000 cal. BC). Societies explored strategies involving increasing management and development of plants, animals, materials, technologies, and ideologies specific to each region whilst sharing some common attributes. Current research in the Eastern Fertile Crescent is contributing new insights into the Early Neolithic transition and the critical role that this region played. The Central Zagros Archaeological Project (CZAP) is investigating this transition in Iraqi Kurdistan, including at the earliest Neolithic settlement so far excavated in the region. In this article, we focus on results from ongoing excavations at the Early Neolithic site of Bestansur on the Shahrizor Plain, Sulaimaniyah province, in order to address key themes in the Neolithic transition

    Sandbox university: Estimating influence of institutional action

    The approach presented in this article represents a generalizable and adaptable methodology for identifying complex interactions in educational systems and for investigating how manipulation of these systems may affect educational outcomes of interest. Multilayer Minimum Spanning Tree and Monte-Carlo methods are used. A virtual Sandbox University is created in order to facilitate effective identification of successful and stable initiatives within higher education, which can affect students' credits and student retention - something that has been lacking up until now. The results highlight the importance of teacher feedback and teacher-student rapport, which is congruent with current educational findings, illustrating the methodology's potential to provide a new basis for further empirical studies of issues in higher education from a complex systems perspective
