We present the first observations of parental care behaviors of the Maroon-chested Ground-Dove (Claravis mondetoura) using 222.5 hours of recorded observations from a single nest found in tropical montane forest in the Tapichalaca Biological Reserve in south-east Ecuador. Recording began with the onset of incubation and continued through fledging. Observations of male and female attendance at the nest were used to analyze visit frequency and timing, duration, and differences in male and female investment in the reproductive effort. Both adults spent time incubating, brooding, and shared feeding responsibilities and patterns observed reflected those commonly seen in other Neotropical Columbidae

This study aims to research how honour is explained and defined by social workers and thus increase the knowledge about the concept itself, and the negative consequences it can have on an individuals’ life. By interviewing (both in a group interview, and in a one-on-one interview) professionals who daily are coming into contact with honour codes and context, and letting them give their view on the subject, a fundamentally positive definition of honour has been set. It is when a group interprets honour as the most important characteristic to maintain and sustain, no matter what costs, that oppression to the point of violence emerges. The study uses, beside the examples of the professionals, the theories on socialization, internalisation, class fractions, and respectability to concretize and explain the complex system consisting of norms and values, in which honour is embedded

Channel choice complications:Exploring the multiplex nature of citizens' channel choices

Part 2: E-Government Services and Open GovernmentInternational audienceIn spite of massive investment and increased adoption of digital services, citizens continue to use traditional channels to interact with public organizations. The channel choice (CC) field of research tries to understand citizens’ interactions with public authorities to make the interaction more efficient and increase citizen satisfaction. However, most studies have been conducted either as surveys of hypothetical services or in experimental settings, leading to a lack of empirical data from actual use contexts. Therefore, we present the results of a sequential mixed methods study which combines observations of citizen-caseworker interaction in a call center, contextual interviews with callers, and a survey classifying topics from 10,000 telephone calls. We contribute to the CC field and practice with rich empirical data from studies of actual channel choices. Specifically, the study explores the multiplex nature of real-life CC and demonstrate how telephone calls can be part of a process, which occurs across both traditional and digital channels. Moreover, we identify problems, which cause telephone calls related to digital services, and classify these in two groups: information related problems and action related problems

the impact of uterine immaturity on obstetrical syndromes during adolescence

    Get PDF
Pregnant nulliparous adolescents are at increased risk, inversely proportional to their age, of major obstetric syndromes, including preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and preterm birth. Emerging evidence indicates that biological immaturity of the uterus accounts for the increased incidence of obstetrical disorders in very young mothers, possibly compounded by sociodemographic factors associated with teenage pregnancy. The endometrium in most newborns is intrinsically resistant to progesterone signaling, and the rate of transition to a fully responsive tissue likely determines pregnancy outcome during adolescence. In addition to ontogenetic progesterone resistance, other factors appear important for the transition of the immature uterus to a functional organ, including estrogen-dependent growth and tissue-specific conditioning of uterine natural killer cells, which plays a critical role in vascular adaptation during pregnancy. The perivascular space around the spiral arteries is rich in endometrial mesenchymal stem-like cells, and dynamic changes in this niche are essential to accommodate endovascular trophoblast invasion and deep placentation. Here we evaluate the intrinsic (uterine-specific) mechanisms that predispose adolescent mothers to the great obstetrical syndromes and discuss the convergence of extrinsic risk factors that may be amenable to intervention

Towards a European Health Research and Innovation Cloud (HRIC)

    Get PDF
The European Union (EU) initiative on the Digital Transformation of Health and Care (Digicare) aims to provide the conditions necessary for building a secure, flexible, and decentralized digital health infrastructure. Creating a European Health Research and Innovation Cloud (HRIC) within this environment should enable data sharing and analysis for health research across the EU, in compliance with data protection legislation while preserving the full trust of the participants. Such a HRIC should learn from and build on existing data infrastructures, integrate best practices, and focus on the concrete needs of the community in terms of technologies, governance, management, regulation, and ethics requirements. Here, we describe the vision and expected benefits of digital data sharing in health research activities and present a roadmap that fosters the opportunities while answering the challenges of implementing a HRIC. For this, we put forward five specific recommendations and action points to ensure that a European HRIC: i) is built on established standards and guidelines, providing cloud technologies through an open and decentralized infrastructure; ii) is developed and certified to the highest standards of interoperability and data security that can be trusted by all stakeholders; iii) is supported by a robust ethical and legal framework that is compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); iv) establishes a proper environment for the training of new generations of data and medical scientists; and v) stimulates research and innovation in transnational collaborations through public and private initiatives and partnerships funded by the EU through Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe

To be or not to be genuine on Instagram. : A qualitative study about how active users experience their use and self-presentation on Instagram.

In today's society we spend more time on social media than ever before. 61% of all Sweden's internet users are active on Instagram, this makes the social media platform the second most used application after Facebook.   The aim of this study was to explore how active users on Instagram, so-called prosumers, experience their own use and self-presentation on Instagram. We chose to conduct ten qualitative semi-structured interviews. We sought to create an understanding of how prosumers use the application and whether there are any usage standards that are important in how they want to present themselves to other users.    The collective term “usage standards” has been created to illustrate the relationship between how prosumers are expected to act and behave towards each other on the platform, and how they subsequently use Instagram. The purpose of this study has been investigated by the use of three research questions: How do prosumers describe their own activity on Instagram? How do prosumers’ usage standards affect other users on Instagram? What is the prosumers’ understanding of the way they present themselves on Instagram?   We have used a number of theoretical frameworks to investigate the study’s purpose. All theories deal with different areas such as use of social media, self-presentation and comparison. The used theories are Goffman’s work on social norms and self-presentation, social comparison theory, social cognitive theory and uses and gratification. To develop a deeper understanding of the study and the subject, it was most appropriate to use a qualitative interview method. Even before the interviews were conducted, four main themes were identified - use, self-presentation, social adaptation and comparison, which are all part of the concept of usage standards. The interviews were conducted in the form of individual interviews and were based on semi-structured questions. This means that the interview contained open questions that allowed respondents to describe their thoughts and experiences.    The four main themes discussed above were used to report and analyze the results. It was discovered that prosumers are mainly influenced by their social environment, which leads them to being inspired by other users as well as copying content. Prosumers also admit that it is important to showcase a “real” image of themselves on the platform, while at the same time insisting that they care about adjusting and customizing their images to make it look aesthetically pleasing. The results show that prosumers compare themselves to other users, consciously and subconsciously, in order to determine how to present themselves.   In the discussion and conclusion, it is found that the social environment influences prosumers in all their activity on Instagram. Prosumers also create usage standards by comparing and adapting their behavior to other users’ content on the platform.
