Increasing risk of revision due to deep infection after hip arthroplasty: A study on 97,344 primary total hip replacements in the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register from 1987 to 2007

    Get PDF
Background and purpose Over the decades, improvements in surgery and perioperative routines have reduced the incidence of deep infections after total hip arthroplasty (THA). There is, however, some evidence to suggest that the incidence of infection is increasing again. We assessed the risk of revision due to deep infection for primary THAs reported to the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register (NAR) over the period 1987–2007

Improved functionalization of oleic acid-coated iron oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications

    Get PDF
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles can providemultiple benefits for biomedical applications in aqueous environments such asmagnetic separation or magnetic resonance imaging. To increase the colloidal stability and allow subsequent reactions, the introduction of hydrophilic functional groups onto the particles’ surface is essential. During this process, the original coating is exchanged by preferably covalently bonded ligands such as trialkoxysilanes. The duration of the silane exchange reaction, which commonly takes more than 24 h, is an important drawback for this approach. In this paper, we present a novel method, which introduces ultrasonication as an energy source to dramatically accelerate this process, resulting in high-quality waterdispersible nanoparticles around 10 nmin size. To prove the generic character, different functional groups were introduced on the surface including polyethylene glycol chains, carboxylic acid, amine, and thiol groups. Their colloidal stability in various aqueous buffer solutions as well as human plasma and serum was investigated to allow implementation in biomedical and sensing applications.status: publishe

Dynamics of Investor Communication in Equity Crowdfunding

    Get PDF
In crowdfunding, start-ups can voluntarily communicate with their investors by posting updates. We investigate whether start-ups strategically use updates, which were previously shown to increase investments. To this end, we use hand-collected data of 751 updates and 39,036 investment decisions from the two major German equity crowdfunding portals Seedmatch and Companisto. We find evidence for strategic communication behavior of startups during an equity crowdfunding campaign. During the funding period, start-ups post updates with linguistic devices that enhance the group identity and the group cohesion. Furthermore, the probability of an update during the funding period increases with a strong competition of other contemporary crowdfunding campaigns

A LC-MS metabolomics approach to investigate the effect of raw apple intake in the rat plasma metabolome

Fruit and vegetable consumption has been associated with several health benefits; however the mechanisms are largely unknown at the biochemical level. Our research aims to investigate whether plasma metabolome profiling can reflect biological effects after feeding rats with raw apple by using an untargeted UPLC-ESI-TOF-MS based metabolomics approach in both positive and negative mode. Eighty young male rats were randomised into groups receiving daily 0, 5 or 10 g fresh apple slices, respectively, for 13 weeks. During weeks 3-6 some of the animals were receiving 4 mg/ml 1,2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride (DMH) once a week. Plasma samples were taken at the end of the intervention and among all groups, about half the animals were 12 h fasted. An initial ANOVA-simultaneous component analysis with a three-factor or two-factor design was employed in order to isolate potential metabolic variations related to the consumption of fresh apples. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis was then applied in order to select discriminative features between plasma metabolites in control versus apple fed rats and partial least squares modelling to reveal possible dose response. The findings indicate that in laboratory rats apple feeding may alter the microbial amino acid fermentation, lowering toxic metabolites from amino acids metabolism and increasing metabolism into more protective products. It may also delay lipid and amino acid catabolism, gluconeogenesis, affect other features of the transition from the postprandial to the fasting state and affect steroid metabolism by suppressing the plasma level of stress corticosteroids, certain mineralocorticoids and oxidised bile acid metabolites. Several new hypotheses regarding the cause of health effects from apple intake can be generated from this study for further testing in humans. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York

IstraĆŸene su vegetacijske sastojine vrste Genista radiata u juĆŸnom Tirolu i razmatrana njihova fitocenoloĆĄka pripadnost. Asocijacija Genisto-Festucetum alpestris Peer 83 nastava strme, juĆŸne vapnenačke obronke visokobrdskog i subalpskog pojasa. The Genista radiata-communities of the Mendel in the South Tyrol (Italy) are described and their connection to other plant-communities is discussed. Genisto-Festucetum alpestris Peer 83 settles on steep, south- exposed colcareous slopes of high-mountain and subalpine altitudes and replaces particularly the dwarf-shrub-belt with Firms mugo. Similar contents aire found in Genisto-F estucetum alpestris pinetasum Peer 83, which occurs in undensed Erico-Pinetum-communities and reaches down to the low-mountain-altitude. In the thermophilic bush-communities, in which Genista radiata is found only as a variant of Orneto-Ostryetum seslerie- tosum (Peer 81), the plant has no syntaxonomic importance. Genista radiata especially is found in the edge-zone. In the grassland of the larch- communities of the ridges Genista radiata appears only sporadically. Here the plant appeals in Festucetum nigrescentis laricetosum subass. prov

Animal-borne telemetry: An integral component of the ocean observing toolkit

    Get PDF
Animal telemetry is a powerful tool for observing marine animals and the physical environments that they inhabit, from coastal and continental shelf ecosystems to polar seas and open oceans. Satellite-linked biologgers and networks of acoustic receivers allow animals to be reliably monitored over scales of tens of meters to thousands of kilometers, giving insight into their habitat use, home range size, the phenology of migratory patterns and the biotic and abiotic factors that drive their distributions. Furthermore, physical environmental variables can be collected using animals as autonomous sampling platforms, increasing spatial and temporal coverage of global oceanographic observation systems. The use of animal telemetry, therefore, has the capacity to provide measures from a suite of essential ocean variables (EOVs) for improved monitoring of Earth's oceans. Here we outline the design features of animal telemetry systems, describe current applications and their benefits and challenges, and discuss future directions. We describe new analytical techniques that improve our ability to not only quantify animal movements but to also provide a powerful framework for comparative studies across taxa. We discuss the application of animal telemetry and its capacity to collect biotic and abiotic data, how the data collected can be incorporated into ocean observing systems, and the role these data can play in improved ocean management

    Electrostatic Double Layers

    No full text
An efficient mechanism for acceleration of auroral particles may be through electrostatic double layers. Birkeland-currents can create favorable conditions for double layers by reduction of the electron density at high altitudes. When double layers appear, a reduction of the current density will occur due to broadening of the current-carrying region in response to the increased resistivity associated with the double layers. However, the double layers will persist, and a balance can be established between the current-broadening and concentrating effects operative in the low ionosphere. Methods to observe double layers with rockets and satellites include measurements of pitch-angle distributions with high resolution, three-axis electric double probes, and topside sounders. Due to the small field-aligned extent (10-100 Debye-lengths) of double layers, they will only show up as spikes of short duration in the output signal of a double probe. Such signals should therefore not be discarded as spurious, but analyzed carefully. Simultaneous measurements of Birkeland-currents, electron density, ion composition, and fluxes and energies of precipitating and upgoing particles are also very desirable, but they cannot alone discriminate between double layers and other anomalous resistivity effects
