    Comparative analysis of pesticide effects on natural enemies in western orchards: A synthesis of laboratory bioassay data

    Pesticides are commonly used for pest management in apple, pear and walnut orchards in the western U.S. and may disrupt biological control of secondary pests in these crops. A comparative analysis was made of results obtained from a series of laboratory bioassays of acute mortality and life table response experiments to estimate lethal and sublethal effects of eight pesticides on seven natural enemy species through use of stage-structured population models. Even though a number of the pesticides tested were reduced-risk products, all of them with the exception of copper plus mancozeb and chlorantraniliprole, caused more than 80% acute mortality of at least one life stage of at least one of the natural enemy species at a full field-rate concentration and could thus be considered moderately harmful according to the International Organization for Biological Control classification for laboratory bioassays. Important sublethal effects included reductions in daily fecundity and egg fertility. From integration of the lethal and sublethal effects in matrix models, the mean of the estimated intrinsic rates of increase for natural enemy species was negative for exposure to cyantraniliprole, lambda-cyhalothrin and spinetoram, but positive and not significantly different from the control for exposure to chlorantraniliprole, copper plus mancozeb, novaluron, and sulfur. For comparisons among pesticides, there appears to be considerable variation in response among natural enemy species that can only be represented effectively from a full life table response experiment and a population-level endpoint, whereas among natural enemy species, their population-level response to the range of pesticides tested could frequently be represented by acute adult mortality alone

    Cyclic ADP-ribose metabolism in rat kidney: High capacity for synthesis in glomeruli. Recent discovery of cyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR) as an agent that triggers Ca2+ release from intracellular stores, through ryanodine receptor channel, is an important new development in the investigation of intracellular signaling mechanisms. We determined the capacity of kidney and its components for synthesis of cADPR from β-NAD, that is catalyzed by enzyme ADP-ribosyl cyclase, and enzymatic inactivation that is catalyzed by cADPR-glycohydrolase. Little or no activity of ADP-ribosyl cyclase was found in extracts from the whole rat kidney, renal cortex, outer and inner medulla. On the other hand, incubation of β-NAD with similar extracts from rat liver, spleen, heart, and brain resulted in biosynthesis of cADPR. In addition, extracts from suspension of proximal tubules or microdissected proximal convoluted tubules virtually lacked ADP-ribosyl cyclase activity. In sharp contrast to proximal tubules and cortex, extracts from glomeruli had high ADP-ribosyl cyclase activity, similar to that found in non-renal tissues. Authenticity of cADPR biosynthesized in glomeruli was documented by several criteria such as HPLC analysis, effect of inhibitors and homologous desensitization of Ca2+-release bioassay. On the other hand, the activity of cADPR-glycohydrolase was similar in extracts from glomeruli and in extracts from kidney cortex. Mesangial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells grown in primary culture displayed considerable ADPR-ribose cyclase activity. Our results show that extracts from glomeruli, unlike extracts from renal tissue zones and proximal tubules, have a singularly high capacity for synthesis of cADPR. We surmise that cADPR-triggered Ca2+-releasing system can serve as an intracellular signaling pathway that may be operant in regulations of glomerular cell functions

    Substructures in WINGS clusters

    We search for and characterize substructures in the projected distribution of galaxies observed in the wide field CCD images of the 77 nearby clusters of the WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey (WINGS). This sample is complete in X-ray flux in the redshift range 0.04<z<0.07. We search for substructures in WINGS clusters with DEDICA, an adaptive-kernel procedure. We test the procedure on Monte-Carlo simulations of the observed frames and determine the reliability for the detected structures. DEDICA identifies at least one reliable structure in the field of 55 clusters. 40 of these clusters have a total of 69 substructures at the same redshift of the cluster (redshift estimates of substructures are from color-magnitude diagrams). The fraction of clusters with subclusters (73%) is higher than in most studies. The presence of subclusters affects the relative luminosities of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). Down to L ~ 10^11.2 L_Sun, our observed differential distribution of subcluster luminosities is consistent with the theoretical prediction of the differential mass function of substructures in cosmological simulations.Comment: A&A accepted - figure 6 is available from http://adlibitum.oats.inaf.it/ramella/WINGSfig

    From planning to execution to the future: An overview of a concerted effort to enhance biological control in apple, pear, and walnut orchards in the western U.S.

    We embarked on a large project designed to help enhance biological control in apple, pear and walnut orchards in the western U.S., where management programs were in the midst of a transition from older organo-phosphate insecticides to mating disruption and newer reduced-risk insecticides. A “pesticide replacement therapy” approach resulted in unstable management programs with unpredictable outbreaks of spider mites and aphids. Our project was designed to provide growers and pest managers with information on the effects of newer pesticide chemistries on a suite of representative natural enemies in both the laboratory and field, potential of new monitoring tools using herbivore-induced plant volatiles and floral volatiles, phenology of the key natural enemy species, economic consequences of using an enhanced biological control program, and value of an outreach program to get project outcomes into the hands of decision-makers. We present an overview of both the successes and failures of the project and of new projects that have spun off from this project to further enhance biological control in our systems in the near future

    Nuclear Reaction Rates and Primordial 6^6Li

    We examine the possibility that Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) may produce non-trivial amounts of 6^6Li. If a primordial component of this isotope could be observed, it would provide a new fundamental test of Big-Bang cosmology, as well as new constraints on the baryon density of the universe. At present, however, theoretical predictions of the primordial 6^6Li abundance are extremely uncertain due to difficulties in both theoretical estimates and experimental determinations of the deuterium-plus-alpha radiative capture reaction cross-section. We also argue that present observational capabilities do not yet allow the detection of primeval 6^6Li in very metal-poor stars of the galactic halo. However, if the critical cross section is towards the upper end of its plausible range, then improvements in 6^6Li detection capabilities may allow the establishment of 6^6Li as another product of BBN. It is also noted that a primordial 6^6Li detection could help resolve current concerns about the extragalactic D/H determination.Comment: 10 pages, REVTeX, 5 PostScript figures with psfig.     This paper describes the Fifth Data Release (DR5) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). DR5 includes all survey quality data taken through June 2005 and represents the completion of the SDSS-I project (whose successor, SDSS-II will continue through mid-2008). It includes five-band photometric data for 217 million objects selected over 8000 square degrees, and 1,048,960 spectra of galaxies, quasars, and stars selected from 5713 square degrees of that imaging data. These numbers represent a roughly 20% increment over those of the Fourth Data Release; all the data from previous data releases are included in the present release. In addition to "standard" SDSS observations, DR5 includes repeat scans of the southern equatorial stripe, imaging scans across M31 and the core of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, and the first spectroscopic data from SEGUE, a survey to explore the kinematics and chemical evolution of the Galaxy. The catalog database incorporates several new features, including photometric redshifts of galaxies, tables of matched objects in overlap regions of the imaging survey, and tools that allow precise computations of survey geometry for statistical investigations.Comment: ApJ Supp, in press, October 2007.     The Ninth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey

    The Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) presents the first spectroscopic data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). This ninth data release (DR9) of the SDSS project includes 535,995 new galaxy spectra (median z=0.52), 102,100 new quasar spectra (median z=2.32), and 90,897 new stellar spectra, along with the data presented in previous data releases. These spectra were obtained with the new BOSS spectrograph and were taken between 2009 December and 2011 July. In addition, the stellar parameters pipeline, which determines radial velocities, surface temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities of stars, has been updated and refined with improvements in temperature estimates for stars with T_eff<5000 K and in metallicity estimates for stars with [Fe/H]>-0.5. DR9 includes new stellar parameters for all stars presented in DR8, including stars from SDSS-I and II, as well as those observed as part of the SDSS-III Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration-2 (SEGUE-2). The astrometry error introduced in the DR8 imaging catalogs has been corrected in the DR9 data products. The next data release for SDSS-III will be in Summer 2013, which will present the first data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) along with another year of data from BOSS, followed by the final SDSS-III data release in December 2014.Comment: 9 figures; 2 tables.     The Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    This paper describes the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), marking the completion of the original goals of the SDSS and the end of the phase known as SDSS-II. It includes 11663 deg^2 of imaging data, with most of the roughly 2000 deg^2 increment over the previous data release lying in regions of low Galactic latitude. The catalog contains five-band photometry for 357 million distinct objects. The survey also includes repeat photometry over 250 deg^2 along the Celestial Equator in the Southern Galactic Cap. A coaddition of these data goes roughly two magnitudes fainter than the main survey. The spectroscopy is now complete over a contiguous area of 7500 deg^2 in the Northern Galactic Cap, closing the gap that was present in previous data releases. There are over 1.6 million spectra in total, including 930,000 galaxies, 120,000 quasars, and 460,000 stars. The data release includes improved stellar photometry at low Galactic latitude. The astrometry has all been recalibrated with the second version of the USNO CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC-2), reducing the rms statistical errors at the bright end to 45 milli-arcseconds per coordinate. A systematic error in bright galaxy photometr is less severe than previously reported for the majority of galaxies. Finally, we describe a series of improvements to the spectroscopic reductions, including better flat-fielding and improved wavelength calibration at the blue end, better processing of objects with extremely strong narrow emission lines, and an improved determination of stellar metallicities.
