    Comparative study of oral ivermectin, topical permethrin and benzyl benzoate in the treatment of scabies

    Background: Efficacy of these modalities as shown by various investigations are inconsistent and ambiguous. Thus, evidence based effective treatment option is warranted. Aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of oral ivermectin, topical permethrin and benzyl benzoate in the treatment of uncomplicated scabies.Methods: Patients with confirmed diagnosis of scabies were included in this study. One hundred and ninety-five subjects were included in this investigation as per inclusion and exclusion criteria laid down. Equal numbers of patients were randomly allocated to one of the three treatment groups. Efficacy of three groups [oral ivermectin (Group A), topical permethrin (Group B) and benzyl benzoate (Group C)] of drugs was compared in terms of improvement in clinical grading of disease (%) and improvement in clinical grading of pruritus (%) during follow up visits.Results: Those subjects receiving topical permethrin, at 1st follow up 56.9% showed cure rate which increased to 89.2% at 2nd follow up with respect to clinical improvement in pruritus. Maximum relief in severity of pruritus at the end of 6th week was reported by 58(89.2%) patients receiving group B treatment modality followed by 52 patients (80%) in arm A. Regarding efficacy of three treatment groups in terms of improvement in severity of lesion at the end of 6 weeks, maximum number of patients 57(87.7%), receiving group B treatment reported improvement which is better than other two treatment groups.Conclusions: maximum number of patients receiving topical Permethrin treatment reported improvement better than other Oral Ivermectin therapy and topical benzyl benzoate. Oral ivermectin may serve a good alternative for managing scabies under certain conditions like poor compliance to topical scabicides

    Design and implementation of an L1 adaptive proportional output feedback controller

    A new approach for output feedback ℒ1 adaptive control based on a proportional adaptation law is presented. The effectiveness of this design is assessed in simulation and validated through real-time testing on an airfoil pitch control wind tunnel experimental rig. Experimental evaluation of the robustness of the controllers, assessed by introducing various disturbances into the control signals, shows that the adaptive control has a better performance compared to PID control, particularly in scenarios with reduced control effectiveness and time-varying disturbances. The experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in practical applications

    O Escotismo é um movimento educacional de jovens, contando com a colaboração de adultos voluntários, sem vínculos político-partidários, que valoriza a participação de pessoas de todas as origens sociais, raças e crenças, de acordo com o propósito, os princípios e o método escoteiro. As atividades escoteiras são sempre realizadas de forma que desperte o interesse das crianças, proporcionando atividades de forma recreativa, onde os objetivos do encontro são vivenciados na maior parte através de atividades, brincadeiras e jogos. Por esta razão, o objetivo deste estágio foi proporcionar atividades de recreação durante os encontros realizados pelo Grupo de escoteiros Águias da Noite com a intenção de contribuir para o desenvolvimento destes lobinhos, ajudando-os a realizar suas potencialidades físicas, intelectuais, sociais, afetivas e espirituais, como cidadãos responsáveis, participantes e úteis em suas comunidades. Aceitaram participar das atividades todas as crianças presentes durante os encontros, possibilitando uma ocasião de aprendizagem significativa, atraente e com novas experiências. A realização do projeto de intervenção foi de grande importância para o crescimento profissional e pessoal, pois o fato de estar com pessoas novas em um lugar novo faz com que o desafio seja maior e o nível de satisfação ao realizá-lo também seja, além de contribuir para a soma de conhecimentos, possibilitou interagir com um grupo que disponibiliza um período de sua semana para realializar um trabalho de forma voluntária que transforma o dia a dia dessas crianças e adolescentes

    Discovery of an aborted reversal (geomagnetic excursion) in the Late Pleistocene sediments of Pinjor Dun, NW Himalaya

    We report here the occurrence of an aborted reversal (geomagnetic excursion) in the Late Pleistocene sediments of Pinjor Dun near Chandigarh, NW Himalaya. The event discovered at ~697.5 cm level from the base of Kiratpur section corresponds to the OSL date of 40±5 Ka coinciding with the Laschamp excursion and palaeointensity minima elsewhere. The Pinjor Dun sediments are deposited at a high rate of sedimentation that enables quite enlarged records of remanent geomagnetic field, hence suitable for further high resolution study of the excursion (under progress) to extend its utility as a stratigraphic marker in the Quaternary sediments at the foothills of the Himalaya

    Morphological Markers based Assessment of Genetic Diversity in Cultivated Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicon L.) Genotypes

    Assessment of genetic diversity in any crop species provides a basis for devising future strategies for crop improvement; conservation and sustainable use. An experiment consisting of 24 genotypes of Tomato was conducted during the year 2016 at the Research Farm and Molecular Biology Laboratory of School of Biotechnology, SKUAST-J, Chatha. The experiment was conducted in Randomised Block Design (RBD) with three replications in 2 rows of 5m length with spacing of 45 x 90 cm. The extent of genetic divergence /relatedness was estimated among 24 genotypes by using 11 traits viz. plant height (cm), number of branches, number of fruits per bunch, total soluble solids, flesh thickness (mm), number of locules, fruit width (cm), fruit length (cm), yield per plant (g), average fruit weight (g), number of fruits per plant. The maximum number of fruits/bunch was recorded in “Utkal Pragyan” (3.66) and the minimum number was recorded in “Swarna Sampada” (2.03). Maximum TSS(%) was recorded in DCT-1 (8.06%) and minimum TSS was recorded in “Dhanshri” (2.83%). Maximum number of fruits and yield/plant was recorded in “DCT-1” (115.33) and “Hisar Lalit” (2507.36g), respectively. The minimum number of fruits and yield/ plant was recorded in “NDT-4” (23.20) and “DCT-1” (861.40g), respectively.Mean data revealed high range for most of studied traits. Hierarchical cluster analysis allowed the assessment of similarity and clarified some of the relationships among tomato genotypes. UPGMA produced a dendrogram with two main clusters with further sub clusters. Of all the studied 24 genotypes Anand tomato and Hisar lalit were found to be most dissimilar based on UPGMA clustering. Hisar lalit was found to be most promising variety among all the genotypes for most of the traits under study, which can be used for further breeding and crop improvement programmes

    Early Cretaceous radiolarians from the Indus suture zone, Ladakh, northern India

    The Nidar ophiolitic complex in estern Ladakh, northem India, consists of u1tramafic rocks, gabbro and sedimentary-volcanic member, in ascending order. The sedimentary-volcanic member in thee Nidar area is about 370 m in thickness, and is composed of altemating chert, japerite, volcanic rocks, red shale, volcanic conglomerate, sandstone and shale. Among these rocks, chert and shale yields well-preserved radiolarian fossils, which range in age, at least, from Hauterivian to Aptian (Early Cretaceous). These ages are consistent with the Sm-Nd mineral-whole rock isochron age of the underlying gabbro. The lithology, ages and geochemical characteristics of the Nidar ophiolitic complex indicate that the complex formed in an intra-oceanic volcanic arc setting.     Contingent upon concentration, reactive oxygen species (ROS) influence cancer evolution in apparently contradictory ways, either initiating/stimulating tumorigenesis and supporting transformation/proliferation of cancer cells or causing cell death. To accommodate high ROS levels, tumor cells modify sulfur-based metabolism, NADPH generation, and the activity of antioxidant transcription factors. During initiation, genetic changes enable cell survival under high ROS levels by activating antioxidant transcription factors or increasing NADPH via the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). During progression and metastasis, tumor cells adapt to oxidative stress by increasing NADPH in various ways, including activation of AMPK, the PPP, and reductive glutamine and folate metabolism

    Efficacy of antimicrobial treatment in non-dysenteric persistent diarrhoea in a community setting

    To determine the efficacy of antimicrobial treatment in non-dysenteric persistent diarrhoea in a community setting. In this double-blind field trial, 156 children aged 4-36 months with persistent diarrhoea not associated with Giardia lamblia infestation seeking treatment in a community outpatient clinic, were randomized to receive a combination of nalidixic acid and metronidazole, metronidazole alone, or placebo for 7 days. In comparison with placebo, metronidazole treatment did not result in a significant reduction in the mean post-enrollment diarrhoeal duration and stool frequency, increase in the proportion of patients recovered by days 3, 5 and 7 of treatment, and increase in weight gain at days 7 and 14. Comparing the combination of nalidixic acid and metronidazole with metronidazole alone, 17.5% more children treated with the combination recovered by day 3 of treatment (p = 0.08) and the mean stool frequency ascertained on day 7 for the previous 24 h was 26.8% less in them (p = 0.05). The weight gains at days 7 and 14 were similar in the two groups. These findings indicate that metronidazole offers no therapeutic benefit in persistent diarrhoea not associated with Giardia lamblia and nalidixic acid has only a modest clinical benefit, which is not substantial enough to warrant its routine use
