How Nudging Inspires Sustainable Behavior among Event Attendees: A Qualitative Analysis of Selected Music Festivals

    Get PDF
This research answers the question of which nudges can be created to subtly influence event attendees in such a way that they contribute to the implementation of a green event. Using the qualitative content analysis according to Mayring, three music festivals were analyzed in detail with regard to their measures for ecological sustainability. All available online resources—in particular, the websites of the music festivals, blog entries, online newspaper articles and, also, observations during several personal visits—were used as sources of the qualitative data. A key result was the development of a model for nudges that can generally be used and implemented for events. The goals, the nudges developed and the possible measures with regard to ecological sustainability are defined in the areas of transport, garbage, electricity, gastronomy, sanitation and compensation of emissions. The more music festival participants already behave in an ecologically sustainable manner, the more others will join them. This can be exploited by using social nudges that consciously inspire group social dynamics. In order to be able to use nudging sensibly, organizers have to internalize that they act as decision-makers, which entails a great ethical and moral responsibility. Even inconspicuous nudges can be very effective

Lines of action and principles for the incorporation of service-learning at local level. Networking in the territory

This article aims to provide some reflections on the potential of service-learning from a territorial point of view. The construction of educational bets in the local scope through service-learning allows to overcome the development of concrete and isolated experiences and to advance towards the construction of educational networks that have a horizon of common good. The contributions in this sense are based on qualitative experiential research that has combined the documentary analysis of different previous experiences and the action-research process carried out in three Catalan territories (Barcelona, Sant Cugat and Puig-Reig). This text sets out the main lines of action to be developed from the perspective of facilitation and/or coordination in the process of implementing service-learning at a territorial level: approach to the territory, shared diagnosis; generation of projects; and communication of the territorial commitment. The reflection on this process underlines that all of them are based on principles such as openness, recognition, coherence and sustainability, among others. Likewise, the work also points out some reflections about the educational agency by other agents of the territory, beyond the educational centers, and the strengthening of the network work to generate more educational territories.

    The service learning values map

Un resultado que, en los procesos de formación del profesorado, ayudará a tomar conciencia de la fuerza moral de esta metodología y a activarla durante su desempeño profesional.[eng] Despite the fact that the specialized bibliography recognizes service learning as a relevant methodology for values education, a sufficiently complete list of the plurality of values that it activates, is not yet available. The objective of this article is to build a reliable map of the values that service learning proposes. In order to achieve it, the levels of learning that overlap in a complex educational practice will be defined and then the values that works at each level of service-learning practices will be determined. To achieve this, a rational reconstruction work based on the reciprocal optimization achieved between a selection of good service-learning experiences and the theory of moral practices and service learning has been carried out. This methodology has allowed us to establish three simultaneous levels of learning —practice, actions and tasks— as well as a list of the values that crystallize in each of them: a complete map of the variety and richness of values that are put into play in service learning. A result that, in the processes of teacher training, will help to raise awareness of the moral strength of this methodology and to activate it during their professional performance

Widespread activation of antisense transcription of the host genome during herpes simplex virus 1 infection

Background: Herpesviruses can infect a wide range of animal species. Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is one of the eight herpesviruses that can infect humans and is prevalent worldwide. Herpesviruses have evolved multiple ways to adapt the infected cells to their needs, but knowledge about these transcriptional and post-transcriptional modifications is sparse. Results: Here, we show that HSV-1 induces the expression of about 1000 antisense transcripts from the human host cell genome. A subset of these is also activated by the closely related varicella zoster virus. Antisense transcripts originate either at gene promoters or within the gene body, and they show different susceptibility to the inhibition of early and immediate early viral gene expression. Overexpression of the major viral transcription factor ICP4 is sufficient to turn on a subset of antisense transcripts. Histone marks around transcription start sites of HSV-1-induced and constitutively transcribed antisense transcripts are highly similar, indicating that the genetic loci are already poised to transcribe these novel RNAs. Furthermore, an antisense transcript overlapping with the BBC3 gene (also known as PUMA) transcriptionally silences this potent inducer of apoptosis in cis. Conclusions: We show for the first time that a virus induces widespread antisense transcription of the host cell genome. We provide evidence that HSV-1 uses this to downregulate a strong inducer of apoptosis. Our findings open new perspectives on global and specific alterations of host cell transcription by viruses

Cortical thickness and resting-state cardiac function across the lifespan: a cross-sectional pooled mega analysis

Understanding the association between autonomic nervous system [ANS] function and brain morphology across the lifespan provides important insights into neurovisceral mechanisms underlying health and disease. Resting state ANS activity, indexed by measures of heart rate [HR] and its variability [HRV] has been associated with brain morphology, particularly cortical thickness [CT]. While findings have been mixed regarding the anatomical distribution and direction of the associations, these inconsistencies may be due to sex and age differences in HR/HRV and CT. Previous studies have been limited by small sample sizes, which impede the assessment of sex differences and aging effects on the association between ANS function and CT. To overcome these limitations, 20 groups worldwide contributed data collected under similar protocols of CT assessment and HR/HRV recording to be pooled in a mega-analysis (N = 1,218 (50.5% female), mean age 36.7 years (range: 12-87)). Findings suggest a decline in HRV as well as CT with increasing age. CT, particularly in the orbitofrontal cortex, explained additional variance in HRV, beyond the effects of aging. This pattern of results may suggest that the decline in HRV with increasing age is related to a decline in orbitofrontal CT. These effects were independent of sex and specific to HRV; with no significant association between CT and HR. Greater CT across the adult lifespan may be vital for the maintenance of healthy cardiac regulation via the ANS – or greater cardiac vagal activity as indirectly reflected in HRV may slow brain atrophy. Findings reveal an important association between cortical thickness and cardiac parasympathetic activity with implications for healthy aging and longevity that should be studied further in longitudinal research
