    Work-family interaction: perceptions concerning balance and role demand

    Women’s participation in paid employment has become a common scenario even in non-Western developing countries.Nevertheless, with the differences in the cultural and contextual factors across nations, variations in the work-family experiences are expected.This study was carried out to explore how non-Western Malaysian people perceive the meaning of a balanced work-family life, as well as to identify the types of role demands surfacing in their work and family roles – employing Malaysia women teachers as the study sample. This study identified some unique findings relating to this matter, suggesting the influence of cultural and the contextual factors in the work-family interrelationship

    Women’s participation in paid employment has become a common scenario even in non-western developing countries. For example in Malaysia, the trend is growing although the traditional gender role remains strong in Malaysian society. Even though working, women are still expected to assume major responsibilities at home. Thus, as opposed to men, women in this society face the challenge to satisfactorily balance work and family. This study was carried out to explore how Malaysian women perceive the meaning of a balanced work-family life. Sampling women teachers, the interview findings revealed that work-family balance was mainly perceived in terms of an individual’s ‘ability to fulfill role obligation’ appropriately in both the work and family domains. A few participants also viewed balance in the context of role satisfaction and role interference. Overall, the results support the assumption in the literature that perceptions of work-family experience are not universal, rather, the construct of work-family balance is culture-specific.   Keywords: Work-family interface, cross-culture, role demands

    Work-family balance: The 3-way interaction effect of role demands, collectivism value and ethnicity

    Work and family are experienced somewhat differently across culture. This paper examines whether the relationship between role-demands and work-family balance (WFB) experience across ethnicity is influenced by the groups’ collectivism value. A total of 324 female teachers were sampled. Using a hierarchical regression analysis, some support was found that the collectivism value do moderate the role demands-WFB relationship. Moreover, evidence was found that, to some extent, the collectivism moderating influence does vary among the different ethnic groups

    Project success in complex projects: A systematic literature review

    Complex projects are important drivers of society changes. Their impact is an important phenomenon because of the influence on both society itself and its economy. Despite the best practices all around the globe, numerous challenges can move complex projects from success to a failure scenario. Despite many research done so far on project success indicators, it is still a lack of agreement on what are the success indicators in co mplex projects. This study focuses on project success, published in the past 16 years, in complex projects. This study provides a better understanding of the various project success indicators, and their influences, therefore project managers will be able to identify and prioritize critical factors associated with implementing a successful project

    A taxonomy of project barriers in complex projects

    Failure in complex projects have motivated researchers and practitioners to investigate the subject in more details. However, while project failure has been the subject of much debate in complex projects, there is no review of its determinants. This study focuses on project barrier/ failure factors, published in the past 16 years, starting from the year 2000, in complex projects. A systematic review of project barriers in complex projects revealed that failure of complex projects could be grouped under eight major factors, namely: technical, economic, political, organizational, project contract, project design and implementation, project team and managerial. Discussion of the findings highlights the importance of understanding barrier factors to ensure successful delivery of complex projects

    PplD Is a De-N-Acetylase of the Cell Wall Linkage Unit of Streptococcal Rhamnopolysaccharides

    The cell wall of the human bacterial pathogen Group A Streptococcus (GAS) consists of peptidoglycan decorated with the Lancefield group A carbohydrate (GAC). GAC is a promising target for the development of GAS vaccines. In this study, employing chemical, compositional, and NMR methods, we show that GAC is attached to peptidoglycan via glucosamine 1-phosphate. This structural feature makes the GAC-peptidoglycan linkage highly sensitive to cleavage by nitrous acid and resistant to mild acid conditions. Using this characteristic of the GAS cell wall, we identify PplD as a protein required for deacetylation of linkage N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). X-ray structural analysis indicates that PplD performs catalysis via a modified acid/base mechanism. Genetic surveys in silico together with functional analysis indicate that PplD homologs deacetylate the polysaccharide linkage in many streptococcal species. We further demonstrate that introduction of positive charges to the cell wall by GlcNAc deacetylation protects GAS against host cationic antimicrobial proteins

    Challenges, Strategies, and Impacts of Doing Citizen Science with Marginalised and Indigenous Communities : Reflections from Project Coordinators

    Citizen science is growing and increasingly realizing its potential in terms of benefiting science and society. However, there are significant barriers to engaging participants in non-Western, non-educated, non-industrialised, non-rich and non-democratic contexts. By reflecting on the experiences of 15 citizen science project coordinators, this paper contributes to the small but growing body of knowledge attempting to identify barriers and opportunities of doing citizen science with marginalised and Indigenous communities. Challenges affecting participation in the analysed projects include issues that range from lack of basic infrastructure and participant safety to unbalanced knowledge hierarchies and data rights. We found that, to overcome these challenges, projects have used several strategies, from promoting decentralized and low-tech solutions to engaging in bottom-up actions from a human-rights approach. Finally, our analysis of project impacts supports the idea that doing citizen science with marginalised and Indigenous communities might have a greater impact for participants than for science, as scientific achievements (although valuable) were not among the most important impacts highlighted in terms of project success. By providing stories from the field in a structured way, we aim to guide, to inform, and to inspire other citizen science projects, and to, ultimately, contribute to broader participation in citizen science in the future

    A genome-wide association study of anorexia nervosa suggests a risk locus implicated in dysregulated leptin signaling

Analysis of phenotypic variability led to the identification of a specific genetic risk factor that approached genome-wide significance (rs929626 in EBF1 (Early B-Cell Factor 1); P = 2.04 x 10(-7); OR = 0.7; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.61-0.8) with independent replication (P = 0.04), suggesting a variant-mediated dysregulation of leptin signaling may play a role in AN. Multiple SNPs in LD with the variant support the nominal association. This demonstrates that although the clinical and etiologic heterogeneity of AN is universally recognized, further careful sub-typing of cases may provide more precise genomic signals. In this study, through a refinement of the phenotype spectrum of AN, we present a replicable GWAS signal that is nominally associated with AN, highlighting a potentially important candidate locus for further investigation.Peer reviewe

    Common Genetic Variation And Age at Onset Of Anorexia Nervosa

    Background Genetics and biology may influence the age at onset of anorexia nervosa (AN). The aims of this study were to determine whether common genetic variation contributes to AN age at onset and to investigate the genetic associations between age at onset of AN and age at menarche. Methods A secondary analysis of the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium genome-wide association study (GWAS) of AN was performed which included 9,335 cases and 31,981 screened controls, all from European ancestries. We conducted GWASs of age at onset, early-onset AN (< 13 years), and typical-onset AN, and genetic correlation, genetic risk score, and Mendelian randomization analyses. Results Two loci were genome-wide significant in the typical-onset AN GWAS. Heritability estimates (SNP-h2) were 0.01-0.04 for age at onset, 0.16-0.25 for early-onset AN, and 0.17-0.25 for typical-onset AN. Early- and typical-onset AN showed distinct genetic correlation patterns with putative risk factors for AN. Specifically, early-onset AN was significantly genetically correlated with younger age at menarche, and typical-onset AN was significantly negatively genetically correlated with anthropometric traits. Genetic risk scores for age at onset and early-onset AN estimated from independent GWASs significantly predicted age at onset. Mendelian randomization analysis suggested a causal link between younger age at menarche and early-onset AN. Conclusions Our results provide evidence consistent with a common variant genetic basis for age at onset and implicate biological pathways regulating menarche and reproduction.Peer reviewe
