Sums over Graphs and Integration over Discrete Groupoids
We show that sums over graphs such as appear in the theory of Feynman
diagrams can be seen as integrals over discrete groupoids. From this point of
view, basic combinatorial formulas of the theory of Feynman diagrams can be
interpreted as pull-back or push-forward formulas for integrals over suitable

Report of the Advisory Committee in Seismology
The Advisory Committee in Seismology has pleasure in reporting the
continued progress of its study of California earth movements during
the year 1924-1925 without essential change of plan. A considerable
amount of geologic work in the study of fault zones has been done during
the year in the Mojave Desert and in Death Valley, the system of
primary triangulation for the detection and measurement of horizontal
displacements has progressed rapidly and effectively, and the development
of suitable instruments for determining the two horizontal components
of local earth movements has progressed to completion. Ground
for a new laboratory has been purchased by the California Institute of
Technology and the construction of the central station laboratory building
upon it has been begun. The laboratory is expected to be occupied
by Mr. H. O. Wood, Research Associate in Seismology, and his associates,
about January 1, 1926. It is hoped that additional stations will also
be occupied before the close of the present calendar year (1925), and
that actual work in what has been happily termed the seismologic triangulation
of California will be successfully inaugurated
Complementary analysis to de-convolute co-located contaminants in marine archaeological bricks
Marine archaeological artefacts contain unexpected compounds due to prolonged exposure to the sea. These can remain dormant and embedded within materials until a change in their surrounding environment, such as exposure to oxygen, prompts a transformation. These changes can pose a problem, as acidic compounds are formed which disintegrate the material, or crystals form which physically break the artefact apart. The extent of these transformations is highly heterogeneous due to its dependence on the ability for oxygen to reach and catalyse these reactions. Additionally, these transformations are heavily dependent on the environment the artefact is exposed to, and the pathways available for ingress, either naturally or through previous degradation. This results in materials with a range of different compounds which are often co-located on the macro, micro and nano-scale. Trying to de-convolute these compounds is challenging, and usually requires a suite of complementary techniques to achieve. Here we report on damaging salts found within marine archaeological bricks and show how it is only possible to qualitatively and quantitatively understand what is present by employing a range of analytical techniques, such as XRD, SEM-EDS and SR-XPD. The marine archaeological bricks studied were found to contain a range of different sulfate-based salts, which had grown crystals in preferred orientations. This provides information which will guide further conservation strategies such as how these bricks are stored, conserved and protected in the future
Beyond the Fokker-Planck equation: Pathwise control of noisy bistable systems
We introduce a new method, allowing to describe slowly time-dependent
Langevin equations through the behaviour of individual paths. This approach
yields considerably more information than the computation of the probability
density. The main idea is to show that for sufficiently small noise intensity
and slow time dependence, the vast majority of paths remain in small space-time
sets, typically in the neighbourhood of potential wells. The size of these sets
often has a power-law dependence on the small parameters, with universal
exponents. The overall probability of exceptional paths is exponentially small,
with an exponent also showing power-law behaviour. The results cover time spans
up to the maximal Kramers time of the system. We apply our method to three
phenomena characteristic for bistable systems: stochastic resonance, dynamical
hysteresis and bifurcation delay, where it yields precise bounds on transition
probabilities, and the distribution of hysteresis areas and first-exit times.

Establishing Lagrangian connections between observations within air masses crossing the Atlantic during the International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation experiment
The ITCT-Lagrangian-2K4 (Intercontinental Transport and Chemical Transformation) experiment was conceived with an aim to quantify the effects of photochemistry and mixing on the transformation of air masses in the free troposphere away from emissions. To this end, attempts were made to intercept and sample air masses several times during their journey across the North Atlantic using four aircraft based in New Hampshire (USA), Faial (Azores) and Creil (France). This article begins by describing forecasts from two Lagrangian models that were used to direct the aircraft into target air masses. A novel technique then identifies Lagrangian matches between flight segments. Two independent searches are conducted: for Lagrangian model matches and for pairs of whole air samples with matching hydrocarbon fingerprints. The information is filtered further by searching for matching hydrocarbon samples that are linked by matching trajectories. The quality of these "coincident matches'' is assessed using temperature, humidity and tracer observations. The technique pulls out five clear Lagrangian cases covering a variety of situations and these are examined in detail. The matching trajectories and hydrocarbon fingerprints are shown, and the downwind minus upwind differences in tracers are discussed
Polarization transfer in the HeH reaction
Polarization transfer in the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at a Q^2 of 0.4 (GeV/c)^2
was measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The ratio of the transverse to the
longitudinal polarization components of the ejected protons was compared with
the same ratio for elastic ep scattering. The results are consistent with a
recent fully relativistic calculation which includes a predicted medium

Inclusive Electron Scattering from Nuclei at
The inclusive A(e,e') cross section for was measured on H,
C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers from 1-7 (GeV/c). The scaling
behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y-scaling to
x-scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit -scaling,

Caveolin-1 protects B6129 mice against Helicobacter pylori gastritis.
Caveolin-1 (Cav1) is a scaffold protein and pathogen receptor in the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract. Chronic infection of gastric epithelial cells by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a major risk factor for human gastric cancer (GC) where Cav1 is frequently down-regulated. However, the function of Cav1 in H. pylori infection and pathogenesis of GC remained unknown. We show here that Cav1-deficient mice, infected for 11 months with the CagA-delivery deficient H. pylori strain SS1, developed more severe gastritis and tissue damage, including loss of parietal cells and foveolar hyperplasia, and displayed lower colonisation of the gastric mucosa than wild-type B6129 littermates. Cav1-null mice showed enhanced infiltration of macrophages and B-cells and secretion of chemokines (RANTES) but had reduced levels of CD25+ regulatory T-cells. Cav1-deficient human GC cells (AGS), infected with the CagA-delivery proficient H. pylori strain G27, were more sensitive to CagA-related cytoskeletal stress morphologies ("humming bird") compared to AGS cells stably transfected with Cav1 (AGS/Cav1). Infection of AGS/Cav1 cells triggered the recruitment of p120 RhoGTPase-activating protein/deleted in liver cancer-1 (p120RhoGAP/DLC1) to Cav1 and counteracted CagA-induced cytoskeletal rearrangements. In human GC cell lines (MKN45, N87) and mouse stomach tissue, H. pylori down-regulated endogenous expression of Cav1 independently of CagA. Mechanistically, H. pylori activated sterol-responsive element-binding protein-1 (SREBP1) to repress transcription of the human Cav1 gene from sterol-responsive elements (SREs) in the proximal Cav1 promoter. These data suggested a protective role of Cav1 against H. pylori-induced inflammation and tissue damage. We propose that H. pylori exploits down-regulation of Cav1 to subvert the host's immune response and to promote signalling of its virulence factors in host cells
Precision Measurement of the Proton and Deuteron Spin Structure Functions g2 and Asymmetries A2
We have measured the spin structure functions g2p and g2d and the virtual
photon asymmetries A2p and A2d over the kinematic range 0.02 < x < 0.8 and 0.7
< Q^2 < 20 GeV^2 by scattering 29.1 and 32.3 GeV longitudinally polarized
electrons from transversely polarized NH3 and 6LiD targets. Our measured g2
approximately follows the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek calculation. The twist-3
reduced matrix elements d2p and d2n are less than two standard deviations from
zero. The data are inconsistent with the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule if there
is no pathological behavior as x->0. The Efremov-Leader-Teryaev integral is
consistent with zero within our measured kinematic range. The absolute value of
A2 is significantly smaller than the sqrt[R(1+A1)/2] limit.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

< Q^2 < 30(GeV/c)^2 by scattering 38.8 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons
from transversely polarized NH3 and 6LiD targets.The absolute value of A2 is
significantly smaller than the sqrt{R} positivity limit over the measured
range, while g2 is consistent with the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek calculation. We
obtain results for the twist-3 reduced matrix elements d2p, d2d and d2n. The
Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule integral - int(g2(x)dx) is reported for the range
