Resilience among children and young people in impoverished urban areas in Kampala: strengths and the importance of context

For social workers working with at risk populations, understanding the dynamic process of resilience presents an opportunity to enhance positive adaptation and provide adequate, contextually sensitive policy and practice to help fulfil the capacities of children and young people. Yet, there are limited studies examining this construct in the Ugandan context, particularly the contextually and culturally bound pathways navigating towards resilience despite adversity. Using a mixedmethod approach, this study aimed to; examine the dynamic nature of resilience as it relates to children and young people in impoverished urban areas in Kampala, analyse the factors that influence resilience processes and document the understanding of resilience as a construct among key stake holders. The method included dialogue sessions, administration of the Child and Youth Resilience Measure 28 item (CYRM-28), and semi-structured interviews with key informants. The children and young people in the study (n = 135; m = 47, f = 88) ranged from 10-24 years across eight geographic areas of urban impoverishment around Kampala. Findings suggest that children and young people in urban poor contexts demonstrate resilience processes, scoring significantly higher on CYRM- 28 than normative data (p = 0.00) and had unique ways to navigate and negotiate resources for positive adaptation despite adversity. According to this study children and young people in urban contexts rely frequently on their own abilities and skills to navigate their way to the resources that they need. Cooperation, problem solving, sense of belonging and social and practical skill development were all important for the sample population in adapting well despite the adversities that they faced. The combined analyses of the quantitative and qualitative components of the study suggest resilience is a highly relevant construct for application in policy and social work practice for children and youth in impoverished urban contexts

A Long Strange Trip through the Evolution of Fan Production, Fan-Branding, and Historical Representation in the Grateful Dead Online Archive

This study explores how a digital music archive tells the story and contributes to the public memory of cult bands. Utilizing the Grateful Dead Archive Online (GDAO) as the primary data source, the researcher obtained a population of 26,835 items and categorized them by the production method of fan or band, item type, era, and logo. Content analysis illustrated themes within the archive in relation to the fannish production and activity within the fandom of the Grateful Dead. The span of this specific fandom spreads across five decades and sheds light onto the ways in which the fandom surrounding cult bands has evolved due to emergent technologies in the digital era. Specifically, the findings of this study demonstrate that the era totals within the archive do not correspond with the band\u27s popularity due to a significant increase of items representing the 1980s with a total of 10,653 items and the 1990s with a total of 12,775 items. These high numbers result from the band\u27s mainstream impact and a eulogizing function for Jerry Garcia in 1995. The impact co-branding had on this iconic brand through the diversity in fan-branding and logo utilization further blurs the lines between producers and consumers in the Grateful Dead fan community. Findings also demonstrated the implications of what history chooses to remember through the archiving process that can be attributed to what Williams (1961) refers to as retro culture in the digital era. This study further illustrates the gaps within the archival history of the Grateful Dead due to the selection process involved in digital archiving. Finally, this study demonstrates the ways in which fandom is constantly in flux between the public and private spheres and how the implementation of an official online archive further blurs these distinctions. The archiving contained within the Grateful Dead Archive Online preserves history for future generations and provides a definitive account of the band and its surrounding fandom. The archive will be all that is left once the original band members and Deadheads are no longer with us. The legacy of this cultural phenomenon is formed and preserved by the archive and will be taken as the official history, despite any gaps that are left in the collection. This study contributes to the field of communication by dissecting the radical public relations and branding strategies that were employed by the Grateful Dead and how the fan community personalized this brand and made it their own. Additionally, this study maps the evolution of fandom in eras of emergent technological advances and it interrogates the ways in which history is preserved and communicated to future scholars and fans

Beyond the Lineup: An Exploration of Consumer Loyalty at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival

    Get PDF
The rise of the Internet and the accelerated technological changes associated with the creation of the Internet have led to a restructuring of business structures in the music industry. These changes in technology coupled with changes in consumer preferences have led to a rise in the popularity and profitability of the live music sector, and specifically music festivals. The market for music festivals is becoming more saturated, and festival organizers are having to find new and distinct ways to differentiate their offerings. In order to maintain competitive positioning in a progressively saturated market, festival organizers must rely on differentiation and be aware of motivations behind consumer purchasing preference and overall festival loyalty. Previous studies have analyzed festival attendee motivations and loyalty behaviors, but this study seeks to understand these aspects of consumer behavior in the context of music festivals specifically. In this study, research was conducted on attendees of Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival by gathering data through an online survey. The study aims to determine if festivalscape factors are significantly related to attendee motivations and loyalty behaviors, and the study also segments attendees based on ticket type to determine if festivalscape factors impact different types of ticketholders in different ways. The results of this study indicate that the festivalscape of music festivals is significantly related to both motivation and loyalty, and while the festivalscape did not affect ticketholders in different ways, this study presents a new method of segmenting music festival attendees based on ticket type

How Flow Regime Affects Predator-Prey Relationships of Stream Darter and Shiner Species

    Get PDF
Analysis of the interactions between abiotic and biotic factors of environments and ecosystems is a highly valued area of research. This study focuses on the interactions between the biotic component of predation and foraging of certain stream fish species and the abiotic component of the flow regime that those species reside in. Gut content analysis followed by statistical calculations in the form of t-tests and chi -quared tests were performed on two fish species who both inhabited a stream with a groundwater flashy flow regime as well as a stream with a runoff flashy flow regime. The research showed that some predatory outcomes, such as the types of food consumed by the fish species, were different between the different flow regimes. Other predatory outcomes, such as how much food in terms of weight was consumed, were not different between the different flow regimes. This is important because it shows how flow regime can be more influential on one area of predator-prey relationships than others, even if those two areas are closely related. Thus, the way that abiotic and biotic factors influence each other can be very specific
