Barroco y fenomenología: la mirada desde el balcón en la poesía de Francisco Brines.

    Get PDF
This article proposes a literary analyze that examines the influences of the Baroque period in Francisco Brines (Oliva, 1931), such as the topic of the gaze from the balcony, considering also Marc Richir's (2006) phenomenological interpretations about Time and Space. Brines' manners and topics can be considered metaphysical or philosophical, but we must not disregard his sensualist approach, that frames his poems in a fragrant Mediterranean landscape. Undoubtedly the sight is the perfect companion to understand Brines through Husserl's phenomenological prism

    Get PDF
The purpose of this article is to try an approach to the philosophical analyseand the literary proposals that claim that a new symbolic order has been created as a consequence of the 11/9 events. International politic and economic have changed, but, above all, our access to the reality have drastically mutated. This Change has lead to a new Semiology in our epistemological approach to the real. Contemporary fiction is a reflection of the relationship of the individuals with the new ontological situation

An Automated System to Classify Stellar Spectra I

    Get PDF
Analyses of stellar spectra often begin with the determination of a number of parameters that define a model atmosphere. This work presents a prototype for an automated spectral classification system that uses a 15 nm-wide region around Hbeta, and applies to stars of spectral types A to K with normal (scaled solar) chemical composition. The new tool exploits synthetic spectra based on plane-parallel flux-constant model atmospheres. The input data are high signal-to-noise spectra with a resolution greater than about 0.1 nm. The output parameters are forced to agree with an external scale of effective temperatures based on the Infrared Flux Method. The system is fast -- a spectrum is classified in a few seconds-- and well-suited for implementation on a web server. We estimate upper limits to the 1-sigma random error in the retrieved effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities as 100 K, 0.3 dex, and 0.1 dex, respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures; to appear in MNRA

Classical test theory versus Rasch analysis for quality of life questionnaire reduction

BACKGROUND: Although health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instruments may offer satisfactory results, their length often limits the extent to which they are actually applied in clinical practice. Efforts to develop short questionnaires have largely focused on reducing existing instruments. The approaches most frequently employed for this purpose rely on statistical procedures that are considered exponents of Classical Test Theory (CTT). Despite the popularity of CTT, two major conceptual limitations have been pointed out: the lack of an explicit ordered continuum of items that represent a unidimensional construct, and the lack of additivity of rating scale data. In contrast to the CTT approach, the Rasch model provides an alternative scaling methodology that enables the examination of the hierarchical structure, unidimensionality and additivity of HRQOL measures. METHODS: In order to empirically compare CTT and Rasch Analysis (RA) results, this paper presents the parallel reduction of a 38-item questionnaire, the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP), through the analysis of the responses of a sample of 9,419 individuals. RESULTS: CTT resulted in 20 items (4 dimensions) whereas RA in 22 items (2 dimensions). Both instruments showed similar characteristics under CTT requirements: item-total correlation ranged 0.45–0.75 for NHP20 and 0.46–0.68 for NHP22, while reliability ranged 0.82–0.93 and 0.87–94 respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the differences in content, NHP20 and NHP22 convergent scores also showed high degrees of association (0.78–0.95). Although the unidimensional view of health of the NHP20 and NHP22 composite scores was also confirmed by RA, NHP20 dimensions failed to meet the goodness-of fit criteria established by the Rasch model, precluding the interval-level of measurement of its scores

A laboratory approach on the combined effects of granite bioreceptivity and parameters modified by climate change on the development of subaerial biofilms on cultural heritage

Conservation of cultural heritage buildings and monuments may be negatively affected by the impact of climate change on substrates and colonizing microorganisms. In this study, four types of commercial granite, in which the bioreceptivity ranged from very low to very high, were inoculated with a multispecies microbial culture and exposed to different temperatures (18 and 24 °C) and levels of water availability (1 day, 3 days and 7 days of water availability/week) to simulate different climatic conditions. The effects on biofilm formation of the interactions between the substrate bioreceptivity and the environmental parameters were investigated. Biofilm growth and photosynthetic efficiency were monitored over 42 days by pulse-amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry and spectrophotometric colour measurement. The primary bioreceptivity of the granite was a determining factor in the organisms' capacity to attach to the substrate and interacted through the experiment with the climatic conditions by modifying the development of the microorganisms. Water availability was a limiting factor for the colonizing microorganisms, in terms of both growth and photosynthetic efficiency. At the higher temperature, metabolic reactions were enhanced under water restriction (but not under maximum water availability) and the microbial ecology was altered, leading to a higher proportion of cyanobacteria relative to algaeThis study was partly financed through project CGL2016-79778-R (AEI/FEDER, UE) and Xunta de Galicia (ED431 2018/32). Variable stars in the globular cluster M28 (NGC 6626)

We present a new search for variable stars in the Galactic globular cluster M28 (NGC 6626). The search is based on a series of BVI images obtained with the SMARTS Consortium's 1.3m telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile. The search was carried out using the ISIS v2.2 image subtraction package. We find a total of 25 variable stars in the field of the cluster, 9 being new discoveries. Of the newly found variables, 1 is an ab-type RR Lyrae star, 6 are c-type RR Lyrae, and 2 are long-period/semi-regular variables. V22, previously classified as a type II Cepheid, appears as a bona-fide RRc in our data. In turn, V20, previously classified as an ab-type RR Lyrae, could not be properly phased with any reasonable period. The properties of the ab-type RR Lyrae stars in M28 appear most consistent with an Oosterhoff-intermediate classification, which is unusual for bona-fide Galactic globulars clusters. However, the cluster's c-type variables do not clearly support such an Oosterhoff type, and a hybrid Oosterhoff I/II system is accordingly another possibility, thus raising the intriguing possibility of multiple populations being present in M28. Coordinates, periods, and light curves in differential fluxes are provided for all the detected variables.Comment: A&A, in pres

S4N: A Spectroscopic Survey of Stars in the Solar Neighborhood

[ABRIDGED] We report the results of a high-resolution spectroscopic survey of all the stars more luminous than Mv = 6.5 mag within 14.5 pc from the Sun. We derive stellar parameters and perform a preliminary abundance and kinematic analysis of the F-G-K stars in the sample. The inferred metallicity ([Fe/H]) distribution is centered at about -0.1 dex, and shows a standard deviation of 0.2 dex. We identify a number of metal-rich K-type stars which appear to be very old, confirming the claims for the existence of such stars in the solar neighborhood. With atmospheric effective temperatures and gravities derived independently of the spectra, we find that our classical LTE model-atmosphere analysis of metal-rich (and mainly K-type) stars provides discrepant abundances from neutral and ionized lines of several metals. Based on transitions of majority species, we discuss abundances of 16 chemical elements. In agreement with earlier studies we find that the abundance ratios to iron of Si, Sc, Ti, Co, and Zn become smaller as the iron abundance increases until approaching the solar values, but the trends reverse for higher iron abundances. At any given metallicity, stars with a `low' galactic rotational velocity tend to have high abundances of Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Co, Zn, and Eu, but low abundances of Ba, Ce, and Nd. The Sun appears deficient by roughly 0.1 dex in O, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Y, Ce, Nd, and Eu, compared to its immediate neighbors with similar iron abundances.Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures, to appear in A&A; data can be accessed from http://hebe.as.utexas.edu/s4n/ or http://www.astro.uu.se/~s4n
