The International Trade Network
Bilateral trade relationships in the international level between pairs of
countries in the world give rise to the notion of the International Trade
Network (ITN). This network has attracted the attention of network researchers
as it serves as an excellent example of the weighted networks, the link weight
being defined as a measure of the volume of trade between two countries. In
this paper we analyzed the international trade data for 53 years and studied in
detail the variations of different network related quantities associated with
the ITN. Our observation is that the ITN has also a scale invariant structure

Proteomics uncover EPHA2 as a potential novel therapeutic target in colorectal cancer cell lines with acquired cetuximab resistance.
BACKGROUND: In metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), acquired resistance against anti-EGFR targeted monoclonal antibodies, such as cetuximab (CET), was shown to be frequently caused by activating alterations in the RAS genes KRAS or NRAS. To this day, no efficient follow-up treatment option has emerged to treat mCRC in such a setting of resistance. METHODS: To uncover potential targets for second-line targeted therapies, we used mass-spectrometric proteomics to shed light on kinome reprogramming in an established cellular model of acquired, KRAS-associated CET resistance. RESULTS: This CET resistance was reflected by significant changes in the kinome, most of them individual to each cell line. Interestingly, all investigated resistant cell lines displayed upregulation of the Ephrin type-A receptor 2 (EPHA2), a well-known driver of traits of progression. Expectedly resistant cell lines displayed increased migration (pâ<â0.01) that was significantly reduced by targeting the EPHA2 signalling axis using RNA interference (RNAi) (pâ<â0.001), ephrin-A1 stimulation (pâ<â0.001), dasatinib (pâ<â0.01), or anti-EPHA2 antibody treatment (pâ<â0.001), identifying it as an actionable target in mCRC with acquired CET resistance. CONCLUSION: These results highlight EPHA2 and its role in mCRC with KRAS-gene mutated acquired CET resistance and support its use as a potential actionable target for the development of future precision medicine therapies
Different reactions to adverse neighborhoods in games of cooperation
In social dilemmas, cooperation among randomly interacting individuals is
often difficult to achieve. The situation changes if interactions take place in
a network where the network structure jointly evolves with the behavioral
strategies of the interacting individuals. In particular, cooperation can be
stabilized if individuals tend to cut interaction links when facing adverse
neighborhoods. Here we consider two different types of reaction to adverse
neighborhoods, and all possible mixtures between these reactions. When faced
with a gloomy outlook, players can either choose to cut and rewire some of
their links to other individuals, or they can migrate to another location and
establish new links in the new local neighborhood. We find that in general
local rewiring is more favorable for the evolution of cooperation than
emigration from adverse neighborhoods. Rewiring helps to maintain the diversity
in the degree distribution of players and favors the spontaneous emergence of
cooperative clusters. Both properties are known to favor the evolution of
cooperation on networks. Interestingly, a mixture of migration and rewiring is
even more favorable for the evolution of cooperation than rewiring on its own.
While most models only consider a single type of reaction to adverse
neighborhoods, the coexistence of several such reactions may actually be an

Wet Granular Materials
Most studies on granular physics have focused on dry granular media, with no
liquids between the grains. However, in geology and many real world
applications (e.g., food processing, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, civil
engineering, constructions, and many industrial applications), liquid is
present between the grains. This produces inter-grain cohesion and drastically
modifies the mechanical properties of the granular media (e.g., the surface
angle can be larger than 90 degrees). Here we present a review of the
mechanical properties of wet granular media, with particular emphasis on the
effect of cohesion. We also list several open problems that might motivate

A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007
We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts
associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal
new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy,
particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the
underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the
period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first
science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed
for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with
the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place
limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave
emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of
