A Framework Towards Technology Creation in Africa: Focusing on Ghana

    Get PDF
Underdevelopment in Africa has been historical and a global concern coupled with the quest for good governance. Several efforts have been made in academia, national governments, the international community, and other institutional arrangements to reverse the trend. These efforts however are yet to produce a lasting result as Africa is still characterized by low productivity output, poverty and a widening technology gap when compared to other developing regions of the world. Conventional approaches used to address the African problem have consistently been devoid of indigenous technology development. Technology is here seen as paramount to every form of production on which an economy is based. This study is therefore aimed at developing a sustainable technology development framework for the production industry in Africa that focuses on Ghana for socio-techno-economic development. The study confirmed the absence of a framework for technology development in Ghana and therefore, proposed one for Africa. Using data from Ghana, the focus therefore is on manufacturing of production technologies for local industry

This study was carried out to find out the possibility of a unique pattern of palm and finger prints (Dermatoglyphics) among 192 adults (96 males and 96 females) of Esan origin who, at the time of this study, were residing in Esan-land - the central senatorial district of Edo state, Nigeria. The subjects were selected via multi-stage sampling technique and fingerprint determination was performed using the Indian ink methods. Palm and fingerprints were observed for the angles connecting the triradii at the roots of the fingers (a-index finger, b-middle finger, c-ring finger d-small finger and t-the most proximal triradii in the palm) taken as atd, tad and tda angles. The data collected were statistically analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) using the student t-test, chi square test and ANOVA as statistical tools. Results showed that the loop pattern had the highest frequency (61.7%) followed by whorl (24.9%), arch (12.8%) and double whorl (0.6%). The mean atd angles were 43.49 for males and 44.02 for females; tad angles were 75.11 for males and 74.71 % for females; and tda were 61.22% for males and 61.35% females. These reveals that the pattern of finger prints distribution were similar for both sexes except that the males had more arches on the right hand (53%) than the females with more arches on the left hand (57.1%).Keywords: Esan people, Dematoglyphic Patterns, Finger Prints, Pal

Blending the Legal and Institutional Framework With the Economy of Communion as a New Paradigm for the Fight Against Corruption in Developing African Countries: The Case of Cameroon

    Get PDF
Corruption in Africa is a colonial legacy. However, this cankerworm grew in strength in the early 1990s as a result of the economic crisis that affected the Cameroonian and most of African economies in the late 1980s, stretching to the mid 1990s. As a result of this economic crisis, the currencies of most African States were devaluated and the salaries of workers were slashed. Extreme poverty then crept into the lives of these workers as they could barely meet up with their daily needs. To ameliorate these poor living standards, most workers resolved to corrupt practices and so corruption grew in strength and in might. African countries were propelled to the top of corruption rankings by corruption watchdog Transparency International. From thence, African governments have been relentless in their efforts to fight against corruption. This paper therefore carries out a critical analysis of the laws and institutions put in place for the fight against corruption in Africa with the case study being Cameroon. It equally assesses the extent of their success and the reasons for their failure. Above all it proposes a new paradigm for the fight against corruption in the developing countries of Africa which is the Economy of Communion

Non-coding RNAs in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: New approaches for better diagnosis and therapy

    Get PDF
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive malignancies with a 5-year survival rate less than 8%, which has remained unchanged over the last 50 years. Early detection is particularly difficult due to the lack of disease-specific symptoms and a reliable biomarker. Multimodality treatment including chemotherapy, radiotherapy (used sparingly) and surgery has become the standard of care for patients with PDAC. Carbohydrate antigen 19–9 (CA 19–9) is the most common diagnostic biomarker; however, it is not specific enough especially for asymptomatic patients. Non-coding RNAs are often deregulated in human malignancies and shown to be involved in cancer-related mechanisms such as cell growth, differentiation, and cell death. Several micro, long non-coding and circular RNAs have been reported to date which are involved in PDAC. Aim of this review is to discuss the roles and functions of non-coding RNAs in diagnosis and treatments of PDAC

Participation and Social Learning in Church-Based Organizations: Implications for Poverty Eradication in Nigeria

The task of poverty eradication requires the joint action of various agencies (IFAD, 2001). In Nigeria, there is a lack of alternative institutions to counter the social processes entrenched in local settings that lead to poverty (Obadan, 2002). The main purpose of this study is to investigate the potentials of Church-based organizations (CBOs) as alternative mechanisms for poverty eradication. I begin by defining poverty from a country perspective and argue that modernistic tendencies have led to a limited understanding. I proffer a communitarian approach for understanding the meaning of poverty and its eradication strategies. I examine the organizational dynamics of a diocese in order to explore the elements within its structure that favor social inclusion in relation to the Roman Catholic Social Justice Agenda. I use Social Learning theory as a theoretical framework to assess how a diocese learns to build on the capacity of individuals and groups as stakeholders that influence poverty eradication at the local level. I build on the role of religious emotions and spiritual values in improving the professional practice of a diocese toward poverty eradication. I also investigate how the means of communication play a role in improving social learning within a diocese, tracing the old social learning tradition from individual cognitions to the new understanding of social learning in social group dynamics. Based on the shifting paradigm in development, I analyze the implications of social learning for CBOs in designing learning for individuals and groups. I further review the concept of Participation and its role in poverty eradication, tracing the historical evolution of participation from the basic needs approach to the populist model that emphasizes broader processes of governance within organizations. The implication of this paradigm shift for CBOs is that a diocese as an organization can learn to become a social change agent by reviewing its "structures" and its understanding of "power." I set out to investigate the Catholic diocese of Ogoja Nigeria, to explore its potential to involve people in social development and the fight against poverty
