Very high energy gamma rays from the direction of Sagittarius A*.
We report the detection of a point-like source of very high energy (VHE) -rays coincident within 1' of Sgr A *, obtained with the HESS array of Cherenkov telescopes. The -rays exhibit a power-law energy spectrum with a spectral index of and a flux above the 165 GeV threshold of m -2 s -1. The measured flux and spectrum differ substantially from recent results reported in particular by the CANGAROO collaboration
Inclusive Production Cross Sections from 920 GeV Fixed Target Proton-Nucleus Collisions
Inclusive differential cross sections and
for the production of \kzeros, \lambdazero, and
\antilambda particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C,
Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to
GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential
cross sections \rklpa and \rllpa are measured to be and , respectively, for \xf . No significant dependence upon the
target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse
momentum distributions also show no significant
dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total
cross sections on the atomic mass of the target material is
discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon are

Impact of different food label formats on healthiness evaluation and food choice of consumers: a randomized-controlled study
Abstract Background Front of pack food labels or signpost labels are currently widely discussed as means to help consumers to make informed food choices. It is hoped that more informed food choices will result in an overall healthier diet. There is only limited evidence, as to which format of a food label is best understood by consumers, helps them best to differentiate between more or less healthy food and whether these changes in perceived healthiness result in changes of food choice. Methods In a randomised experimental study in Hamburg/Germany 420 adult subjects were exposed to one of five experimental conditions: (1) a simple "healthy choice" tick, (2) a multiple traffic light label, (3) a monochrome Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) label, (4) a coloured GDA label and (5) a "no label" condition. In the first task they had to identify the healthier food items in 28 pair-wise comparisons of foods from different food groups. In the second task they were asked to select food portions from a range of foods to compose a one-day's consumption. Differences between means were analysed using ANOVAs. Results Task I: Experimental conditions differed significantly in the number of correct decisions (p Conclusion Different food label formats differ in the understanding of consumers. The current study shows, that German adults profit most from the multiple traffic light labels. Perceived healthiness of foods is influenced by this label format most often. Nevertheless, such changes in perceived healthiness are unlikely to influence food choice and consumption. Attempts to establish the informed consumer with the hope that informed choices will be healthier choices are unlikely to change consumer behaviour and will not result in the desired contribution to the prevention of obesity and diet related diseases.</p
Pattern Recognition and Event Reconstruction in Particle Physics Experiments
This report reviews methods of pattern recognition and event reconstruction
used in modern high energy physics experiments. After a brief introduction into
general concepts of particle detectors and statistical evaluation, different
approaches in global and local methods of track pattern recognition are
reviewed with their typical strengths and shortcomings. The emphasis is then
moved to methods which estimate the particle properties from the signals which
pattern recognition has associated. Finally, the global reconstruction of the

(Hymenoptera, Formicidae), tenham sido aproveitadas na composição de presĂ©pios no estado de SĂŁo Paulo. Tendo subsistido pelo menos atĂ© a dĂ©cada 1960, os "presĂ©pios de formigas" existentes em cidades como Embu das Artes poderiam estar relacionados Ă s "formigas vestidas" criadas por Jules Martin, curiosa manufatura paulistana do Ășltimo quartel do sĂ©culo XIX.Present in Brazil since the beginning of Portuguese colonization, crĂšche nativity scenes were soon adapted to local reality, a propitious circumstance for the appearance of heterodox conceptions and the use of exotic elements of the fauna and flora peculiar to each region. Having subsisted at least up to the decade of 1960, the "ant crĂšches" of cities such as Embu das Artes could be related to the then famous "dressed ants" created by Jules Martin, a curious manufacture of the city of SĂŁo Paulo in the last quarter of the 19th century
In silico exploration of Red Sea Bacillus genomes for natural product biosynthetic gene clusters
Background: The increasing spectrum of multidrug-resistant bacteria is a major global public health concern, necessitating discovery of novel antimicrobial agents. Here, members of the genus Bacillus are investigated as a potentially attractive source of novel antibiotics due to their broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities. We specifically focus on a computational analysis of the distinctive biosynthetic potential of Bacillus paralicheniformis strains isolated from the Red Sea, an ecosystem exposed to adverse, highly saline and hot conditions. Results: We report the complete circular and annotated genomes of two Red Sea strains, B. paralicheniformis Bac48 isolated from mangrove mud and B. paralicheniformis Bac84 isolated from microbial mat collected from Rabigh Harbor Lagoon in Saudi Arabia. Comparing the genomes of B. paralicheniformis Bac48 and B. paralicheniformis Bac84 with nine publicly available complete genomes of B. licheniformis and three genomes of B. paralicheniformis, revealed that all of the B. paralicheniformis strains in this study are more enriched in nonribosomal peptides (NRPs). We further report the first computationally identified trans-acyltransferase (trans-AT) nonribosomal peptide synthetase/polyketide synthase (PKS/ NRPS) cluster in strains of this species. Conclusions:B. paralicheniformis species have more genes associated with biosynthesis of antimicrobial bioactive compounds than other previously characterized species of B. licheniformis, which suggests that these species are better potential sources for novel antibiotics. Moreover, the genome of the Red Sea strain B. paralicheniformis Bac48 is more enriched in modular PKS genes compared to B. licheniformis strains and other B. paralicheniformis strains. This may be linked to adaptations that strains surviving in the Red Sea underwent to survive in the relatively hot and saline ecosystems
Discovery of extended VHE gamma-ray emission from the asymmetric pulsar wind nebula in MSH 15-52 with H.E.S.S
The Supernova Remnant MSH 15-52 has been observed in very high energy (VHE)
gamma-rays using the H.E.S.S. 4-telescope array located in Namibia. A gamma-ray
signal is detected at the 25 sigma level during an exposure of 22.1 hours live
time. The image reveals an elliptically shaped emission region around the
pulsar PSR B1509-58, with semi-major axis 6' in the NW-SE direction and
semi-minor axis 2' approximately. This morphology coincides with the diffuse
pulsar wind nebula as observed at X-ray energies by ROSAT. The overall energy
spectrum from 280 GeV up to 40 TeV can be fitted by a power law with photon
index Gamma = 2.27 +/- 0.03(stat.) +/- 0.20(syst.). The detected emission can
be plausibly explained by inverse Compton scattering of accelerated
relativistic electrons with soft photons.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by A&A letter
The QCD transition temperature: results with physical masses in the continuum limit II.
We extend our previous study [Phys. Lett. B643 (2006) 46] of the cross-over
temperatures (T_c) of QCD. We improve our zero temperature analysis by using
physical quark masses and finer lattices. In addition to the kaon decay
constant used for scale setting we determine four quantities (masses of the
\Omega baryon, K^*(892) and \phi(1020) mesons and the pion decay constant)
which are found to agree with experiment. This implies that --independently of
which of these quantities is used to set the overall scale-- the same results
are obtained within a few percent. At finite temperature we use finer lattices
down to a <= 0.1 fm (N_t=12 and N_t=16 at one point). Our new results confirm
completely our previous findings. We compare the results with those of the

Expressed sequence tags from Atta laevigata and identification of candidate genes for the control of pest leaf-cutting ants
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Leafcutters are the highest evolved within Neotropical ants in the tribe Attini and model systems for studying caste formation, labor division and symbiosis with microorganisms. Some species of leafcutters are agricultural pests controlled by chemicals which affect other animals and accumulate in the environment. Aiming to provide genetic basis for the study of leafcutters and for the development of more specific and environmentally friendly methods for the control of pest leafcutters, we generated expressed sequence tag data from <it>Atta laevigata</it>, one of the pest ants with broad geographic distribution in South America.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The analysis of the expressed sequence tags allowed us to characterize 2,006 unique sequences in <it>Atta laevigata</it>. Sixteen of these genes had a high number of transcripts and are likely positively selected for high level of gene expression, being responsible for three basic biological functions: energy conservation through redox reactions in mitochondria; cytoskeleton and muscle structuring; regulation of gene expression and metabolism. Based on leafcutters lifestyle and reports of genes involved in key processes of other social insects, we identified 146 sequences potential targets for controlling pest leafcutters. The targets are responsible for antixenobiosis, development and longevity, immunity, resistance to pathogens, pheromone function, cell signaling, behavior, polysaccharide metabolism and arginine kynase activity.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The generation and analysis of expressed sequence tags from <it>Atta laevigata </it>have provided important genetic basis for future studies on the biology of leaf-cutting ants and may contribute to the development of a more specific and environmentally friendly method for the control of agricultural pest leafcutters.</p
