    Cognitive-developmental learning for a humanoid robot : a caregiver's gift

The humanoid robot therefore sees the world through the caregiver's eyes. Building an artificial humanoid robot's brain, even at an infant's cognitive level, has been a long quest which still lies only in the realm of our imagination. Our efforts towards such a dimly imaginable task are developed according to two alternate and complementary views: cognitive and developmental.The goal of this work is to build a cognitive system for the humanoid robot, Cog, that exploits human caregivers as catalysts to perceive and learn about actions, objects, scenes, people, and the robot itself. This thesis addresses a broad spectrum of machine learning problems across several categorization levels. Actions by embodied agents are used to automatically generate training data for the learning mechanisms, so that the robot develops categorization autonomously. Taking inspiration from the human brain, a framework of algorithms and methodologies was implemented to emulate different cognitive capabilities on the humanoid robot Cog. This framework is effectively applied to a collection of AI, computer vision, and signal processing problems. Cognitive capabilities of the humanoid robot are developmentally created, starting from infant-like abilities for detecting, segmenting, and recognizing percepts over multiple sensing modalities. Human caregivers provide a helping hand for communicating such information to the robot. This is done by actions that create meaningful events (by changing the world in which the robot is situated) thus inducing the "compliant perception" of objects from these human-robot interactions. Self-exploration of the world extends the robot's knowledge concerning object properties. This thesis argues for enculturating humanoid robots using infant development as a metaphor for building a humanoid robot's cognitive abilities. A human caregiver redesigns a humanoid's brain by teaching the humanoid robot as she would teach a child, using children's learning aids such as books, drawing boards, or other cognitive artifacts.     Sensory processing of visual, auditory, and other sensor information (e.g., visual imagery, LIDAR, RADAR) is conventionally based on "stovepiped," or isolated processing, with little interactions between modules. Biological systems, on the other hand, fuse multi-sensory information to identify nearby objects of interest more quickly, more efficiently, and with higher signal-to-noise ratios. Similarly, examples of the OpenSense technology disclosed herein use neurally inspired processing to identify and locate objects in a robot's environment. This enables the robot to navigate its environment more quickly and with lower computational and power requirements

    Development of Cognitive Capabilities in Humanoid Robots

Recent theories in autonomous cognitive systems have focused on the close integration (grounding) of communication with perception, categorisation and action. Cognitive systems are essential for integrated multi-platform systems that are capable of sensing and communicating. This thesis presents a cognitive system for a humanoid robot that integrates abilities such as object detection and recognition, which are merged with natural language understanding and refined motor controls. The work includes three studies; (1) the use of generic manipulation of objects using the NMFT algorithm, by successfully testing the extension of the NMFT to control robot behaviour; (2) a study of the development of a robotic simulator; (3) robotic simulation experiments showing that a humanoid robot is able to acquire complex behavioural, cognitive, and linguistic skills through individual and social learning. The robot is able to learn to handle and manipulate objects autonomously, to cooperate with human users, and to adapt its abilities to changes in internal and environmental conditions. The model and the experimental results reported in this thesis, emphasise the importance of embodied cognition, i.e. the humanoid robot's physical interaction between its body and the environment

    An Incremental Navigation Localization Methodology for Application to Semi-Autonomous Mobile Robotic Platforms to Assist Individuals Having Severe Motor Disabilities.

    In the present work, the author explores the issues surrounding the design and development of an intelligent wheelchair platform incorporating the semi-autonomous system paradigm, to meet the needs of individuals with severe motor disabilities. The author presents a discussion of the problems of navigation that must be solved before any system of this type can be instantiated, and enumerates the general design issues that must be addressed by the designers of systems of this type. This discussion includes reviews of various methodologies that have been proposed as solutions to the problems considered. Next, the author introduces a new navigation method, called Incremental Signature Recognition (ISR), for use by semi-autonomous systems in structured environments. This method is based on the recognition, recording, and tracking of environmental discontinuities: sensor reported anomalies in measured environmental parameters. The author then proposes a robust, redundant, dynamic, self-diagnosing sensing methodology for detecting and compensating for hidden failures of single sensors and sensor idiosyncrasies. This technique is optimized for the detection of spatial discontinuity anomalies. Finally, the author gives details of an effort to realize a prototype ISR based system, along with insights into the various implementation choices made

    Development and evaluation of low cost 2-d lidar based traffic data collection methods

    Traffic data collection is one of the essential components of a transportation planning exercise. Granular traffic data such as volume count, vehicle classification, speed measurement, and occupancy, allows managing transportation systems more effectively. For effective traffic operation and management, authorities require deploying many sensors across the network. Moreover, the ascending efforts to achieve smart transportation aspects put immense pressure on planning authorities to deploy more sensors to cover an extensive network. This research focuses on the development and evaluation of inexpensive data collection methodology by using two-dimensional (2-D) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. LiDAR is adopted since it is economical and easily accessible technology. Moreover, its 360-degree visibility and accurate distance information make it more reliable. To collect traffic count data, the proposed method integrates a Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) into a single framework. Proof-of-Concept (POC) test is conducted in three different places in Newark, New Jersey to examine the performance of the proposed method. The POC test results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves acceptable performances, resulting in 83% ~ 94% accuracy. It is discovered that the proposed method\u27s accuracy is affected by the color of the exterior surface of a vehicle since some colored surfaces do not produce enough reflective rays. It is noticed that the blue and black colors are less reflective, while white-colored surfaces produce high reflective rays. A methodology is proposed that comprises K-means clustering, inverse sensor model, and Kalman filter to obtain trajectories of the vehicles at the intersections. The primary purpose of vehicle detection and tracking is to obtain the turning movement counts at an intersection. A K-means clustering is an unsupervised machine learning technique that clusters the data into different groups by analyzing the smallest mean of a data point from the centroid. The ultimate objective of applying K-mean clustering is to identify the difference between pedestrians and vehicles. An inverse sensor model is a state model of occupancy grid mapping that localizes the detected vehicles on the grid map. A constant velocity model based Kalman filter is defined to track the trajectory of the vehicles. The data are collected from two intersections located in Newark, New Jersey, to study the accuracy of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method has an average accuracy of 83.75%. Furthermore, the obtained R-squared value for localization of the vehicles on the grid map is ranging between 0.87 to 0.89. Furthermore, a primary cost comparison is made to study the cost efficiency of the developed methodology. The cost comparison shows that the proposed methodology based on 2-D LiDAR technology can achieve acceptable accuracy at a low price and be considered a smart city concept to conduct extensive scale data collection
