In this final degree project, the technical and economic feasibility of the hybridization of two renewable technologies, solar thermal and photovoltaic, is studied. The present Final Degree Project tackles the energy analysis of an Integrated Solar Combined Cycle (ISCC) Power Plant. To this end, taking the Combined Cycle II of Granadilla Thermal Power Plant as a reference, the simulation software DWSIM and SAM (System Advisor Model) have been used. The combined cycle has been modelled using DWSIM, whereas the solar thermal plant was modelled using SAM, utilizing the central receiver system. First, the combined cycle has been studied under different partial load values, taking one of them as the design point to make the solar-fossil hybridization. Subsequently, the premise to design the solar thermal plant was to optimize the yearly thermal energy produced per occupied unit area, through the analysis of the storage capacity (full load hours of storage) and the solar multiple. From the study, the additional yearly electric power produced due to the incorporation of the solar system is obtained, where the hybridization major effects are the increase in net output power and the reduction in fuel consumption, leading to less greenhouse gases emissions. Likewise, the solar-fossil hybridization would provide a boost in renewable energy integration in the Canary Islands, where the energy transition is currently happening at a slow pace and it is urgent to take actions to fulfil green transition objectives as quickly as possible, in energy and environmental matters

The main objective of this work is to evaluate the relationship between photovoltaic and parabolic-cylinder Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technologies for hybrid plants. These plants will have defined generation parameters and were simulated in different locations in Brazil. The simulations were done in specific software to obtain comparable data between the analyzed regions and between the hybrid plants and a CSP cylinder-parabolic plant that operates alone according to the same generation parameters of the hybrid plant. In addition, make a cost assessment for the technologies analyzed, within the country and study the hybridization between CSP and photovoltaic as a way of encouraging the introduction of CSP in the domestic market. The study was carried out for an electric power plant model with 100MW of nominal power, 50MW of CSP and 50 MW of photovoltaic. The optimizations that were made in the hybrid plant at each location to meet generation parameters were always made in the CSP part of the hybrid plant

PROPUESTA DE UN CONTROL SUPERVISOR PARA REGULAR LA TENSIÓN DE SALIDA DE UN CONVERTIDOR BOOST UTILIZANDO LA ENTROPÍA APROXIMADA COMO DETECTOR DE EVENTOS

This work is mainly aimed to design a supervisory control system for regulating, very precisely, the output voltage for a boost converter, based on the model of a hybrid plant. The theory of sliding mode control is used to synthesize a controller for the continuous dynamics. Now, to solve both the problem of discontinuity as the problem of insensitivity to uncertainty in the load resistance of such converter had to design a hybrid output feedback controller to guarantee the output voltage to a desired value. Particularly an approximate entropy (ApEn) concept is used as an innovative method that could detect any event generated on the continuous time dynamics in the hybrid system. It was found that the hybrid plant supervisor provides good results in terms of robustness to disturbances, maintaining a good dynamic response

Rural electrification in central america and east africa, two case studies of sustainable microgrids

This paper deals with the electrification of rural villages in developing countries using Sustainable Energy Systems. The rural electrification feasibility study is done using Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable PRO (HOMER PRO). The HOMER PRO energy modelling software is an optimization software improved by U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It helps in designing, comparing and optimizing the design of power generation technologies. In this paper, two rural electrification case studies are modelled and analysed using HOMER PRO. Technical and economic evaluation criteria are applied to study the feasibility of a micro-hydro plant in El Díptamo (Honduras), and a hybrid plant composed of photovoltaic module arrays, Diesel generators, and flow batteries, in a small island on Victoria Lake. For both cases, we show the results of the studies of the daily and yearly loads, of the resources available in the area and the economic evaluation of the chosen plants configuration
