    Multiphase induction motor drives - a technology status review

    The area of multiphase variable-speed motor drives in general and multiphase induction motor drives in particular has experienced a substantial growth since the beginning of this century. Research has been conducted worldwide and numerous interesting developments have been reported in the literature. An attempt is made to provide a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in this area. The elaborated aspects include advantages of multiphase induction machines, modelling of multiphase induction machines, basic vector control and direct torque control schemes and PWM control of multiphase voltage source inverters. The authors also provide a detailed survey of the control strategies for five-phase and asymmetrical six-phase induction motor drives, as well as an overview of the approaches to the design of fault tolerant strategies for post-fault drive operation, and a discussion of multiphase multi-motor drives with single inverter supply. Experimental results, collected from various multiphase induction motor drive laboratory rigs, are also included to facilitate the understanding of the drive operatio

    Direct torque control for dual three-phase induction motor drives

    A direct torque control (DTC) strategy for dual three-phase induction motor drives is discussed in this paper. The induction machine has two sets of stator three-phase windings spatially shifted by 30 electrical degrees. The DTC strategy is based on a predictive algorithm and is implemented in a synchronous reference frame aligned with the machine stator flux vector. The advantages of the discussed control strategy are constant inverter switching frequency, good transient and steady-state performance, and low distortion of machine currents with respect to direct self-control (DSC) and other DTC schemes with variable switching frequency.     Interest and Applicability of Meta-Heuristic Algorithms in the Electrical Parameter Identification of Multiphase Machines

    Multiphase machines are complex multi-variable electro-mechanical systems that are receiving special attention from industry due to their better fault tolerance and power-per-phase splitting characteristics compared with conventional three-phase machines. Their utility and interest are restricted to the definition of high-performance controllers, which strongly depends on the knowledge of the electrical parameters used in the multiphase machine model. This work presents the proof-of-concept of a new method based on particle swarm optimization and standstill time-domain tests. This proposed method is tested to estimate the electrical parameters of a five-phase induction machine.     Transient model of an automotive multiphase induction machine with phase and pole changing capability

    This thesis presents the derivation of two transient models of a multiphase induction motor. The first is based on the analytical electromagnetic and algebraic nature of the problem. The second focuses on the extraction of lumped information from a Finite Element analysis of the machine. Both result in a system of ordinary differential equations. Models are compared to a FE reference in terms of electrical and mechanical results for different supplying configurations and pole transitions

    Assessment of a Universal Reconfiguration-less Control Approach in Open-Phase Fault Operation for Multiphase Drives

    Multiphase drives have been important in particular industry applications where reliability is a desired goal. The main reason for this is their inherent fault tolerance. Di erent nonlinear controllers that do not include modulation stages, like direct torque control (DTC) or model-based predictive control (MPC), have been used in recent times to govern these complex systems, including mandatory control reconfiguration to guarantee the fault tolerance characteristic. A new reconfiguration-less approach based on virtual voltage vectors (VVs) was recently proposed for MPC, providing a natural healthy and faulty closed-loop regulation of a particular asymmetrical six-phase drive.     Multi-phase inverter-controlled induction machine at varied rotor parameters

    This paper presents a step-wise modelling of a symmetrical six-phase induction machine driven by a six-phase diode clamped multi-level inverter at a varying rotor resistance and motor inertia. The machine drive process was considered in two stages. The first stage presents the dynamic behavior of the machine when a load torque of 0 Nm and 100 Nm is applied at a varied rotor external resistance value of (0.8 and 3.2) Ω with constant motor inertia. The second stage showcased the variations in the speed, electromagnetic torque and rotor current when motor inertia is varied at (0.5 and 1.5) Kg-m2 with rotor resistance held constant. A six-phase five-level diode clamped converter phase displaced by sixty degrees with a modulation index of 0.8 was modeled to drive the poly-phase machine at a reduced %THD. All machine models were simulated in MATLAB 7.11. The simulation results showed that reduced oscillations in rotor current, motor speed and torque pulsations were achieved at a varied external rotor resistance and motor inertia

    This paper describe the presentation of an IM for high load and high-power applications, this kind of applications the motor have a complex coupling between the field and torque. This can be achieve with assist of Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) and parallel connection of two motors. The benefit is that parallel connection can provide the decoupled control of flux and torque for each motor and their concert in different operating environments. The Speed control of two Double Star Induction Motors working in parallel configuration with IFOC using a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) and Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference (ANFIS) controller is investigate in different operating environments. The two motors are connected in parallel at the output of a single six-phase PWM based inverter fed from a DC source. Performance of the projected method under load disturbances is studied through simulation using a MATLAB and evaluation of speed response of two controllers is analyzed. &nbsp

    Improved field oriented control for stand alone dual star induction generator used in wind energy conversion

    This paper presents a novel direct rotor flux oriented control with online estimation of magnetizing current and magnetizing inductance applied to self-excited dual star induction generator equipping a wind turbine in remote sites. The induction generator is connected to nonlinear load through two PWM rectifiers. The fuzzy logic controller is used to ensure the DC bus voltage a constant value when changes in speed and load conditions. In this study, a performance comparison between the conventional approach and the novel approach is made. The proposed control strategy is validated by simulation in Matlab/Simulink

    Grid synchronization of a seven-phase wind electric generator using d-q PLL

    Abstract: The evolving multiphase induction generators (MPIGs) with more than three phases are receiving prominence in high power generation systems. This paper aims at the development of a comprehensive model of the wind turbine driven seven-phase induction generator (7PIG) along with the necessary power electronic converters and the controller for grid interface. The dynamic model of the system is developed in MATLAB/Simulink (R2015b, The MathWorks, Inc., Natick, MA, USA). A synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop (SRFPLL) system is incorporated for grid synchronization. The modeling aspects are detailed and the system response is observed for various wind velocities. The effectiveness of the seven phase induction generator is demonstrated with the fault tolerant capability and high output power with reduced phase current when compared to the conventional 3-phase wind generation scheme. The response of the PLL is analysed and the results are presented
