The Catalyzing Role of FinTechs for Innovation Sourcing in Financial Services
In recent years a lively scene of startup companies developed focusing specifically on the financial services sector. These so-called FinTechs are characterized by highlyinnovative capacities, rapid development methods and a short time to market for their services and technical solutions. This external source of innovation can pose a competitive threat to traditional financial service companies or, on the contrary, may add value by serving as an additional resource for new ideas and technical solutions. Using a multiple case study approach, 18 interviews were conducted with representatives of FinTechs, financial services corporations, and specialized consulting firms. Westudy how large corporations and FinTechs interact with each other, what organizational setups were chosen and how knowledge transfer is organized for successful collaboration. Our results indicate that the organizational setup, split into three dimensions, has a strong impact on the integration of external knowledge which, in turn, affectsthe success of innovation sourcing
Is Information Systems Research Concerned with Societal Grand Challenges?
âGrand challengesâ can provide an important orientation regarding whether research deals with societally relevant problems. Yet, many IS scholars have claimed that IS research is often dealing with issues that are of rather little relevance to societal grand challenges. In this âresearch-in-progressâ study, we examine to which degree IS research is concerned with societal grand challenges. We approach this question by thus far analyzing 329 papers published in the leading AIS âBasket of Eightâ (AIS 8) IS journals in the year 2020. Using coding analysis rooted in justification theory to clarify why IS research was performed, we map the justifications given in those papers against the grand challenges as set out in the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. The findings indicate that IS research seems to be contributing to some societal challenges (e.g., industrial innovation, economic growth or health), while neglecting many others (e.g., societal equality, environmental sustainability and challenges in developing countries)
Formation and dissolution of leaky clusters
Massive Galactic clusters (> 1000 Msun) exhibit a clear correlation between
cluster density, size and age and can be sorted in two categories, i.e.
starburst and leaky clusters. The reason for the existance of two types of
massive clusters is an open question. However, the answer is probably connected
to a different formation histories of the two types. In this study we
concentrate onleaky clusters only and investigate possible formation scenarios
and gas expulsion phase. This is done by using existing observational data and
numerical results of embedded cluster properties. Assuming that a clear
correlation between cluster density, size and age exists, it is shown that the
density-radius development over time forembedded clusters can be approximated
by rho \approx 100*r ^{-1.3} Msun pc^{-3}. The consequences for the star
formation process in leaky clusters are discussed and found to favour an
inside-out star formation scenario with an initially low but later accelerated
star formation rate. It is shown how the leaky clusters form in a unique
sequential manner and that rapid gas expulsion is responsible for the 80-90\%
mass loss over the next 20 Myr.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted by A&
Universality of young cluster sequences
Most stars do not form in isolation but as part of a cluster comprising
anywhere between a few dozen to several million stars with stellar densities
ranging from 0.01 to several 10 \Msun pc. The majority of these
clusters dissolve within 20 Myr. The general assumption is that clusters are
born more or less over this entire density range. A new analysis of cluster
observations is presented. It demonstrates that, in fact, clustered star
formation works under surprisingly tight constraints with respect to cluster
size and density. The observed multitude of cluster densities simply results
from snapshots of two sequences evolving in time along pre-defined tracks in
the density-radius plane. This implies that the cluster size can actually be
used to determine its age.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for A&A Letter
From GHz to mHz: A Multiwavelength Study of the Acoustically Active 14 August 2004 M7.4 Solar Flare
We carried out an electromagnetic acoustic analysis of the solar flare of 14
August 2004 in active region AR10656 from the radio to the hard X-ray spectrum.
The flare was a GOES soft X-ray class M7.4 and produced a detectable sun quake,
confirming earlier inferences that relatively low-energy flares may be able to
generate sun quakes. We introduce the hypothesis that the seismicity of the
active region is closely related to the heights of coronal magnetic loops that
conduct high-energy particles from the flare. In the case of relatively short
magnetic loops, chromospheric evaporation populates the loop interior with
ionized gas relatively rapidly, expediting the scattering of remaining trapped
high-energy electrons into the magnetic loss cone and their rapid precipitation
into the chromosphere. This increases both the intensity and suddenness of the
chromospheric heating, satisfying the basic conditions for an acoustic emission
that penetrates into the solar interior.Comment: Accepted in Solar Physic
The relation between the most-massive star and its parental star cluster mass
We present a thorough literature study of the most-massive star, m_max, in
several young star clusters in order to assess whether or not star clusters are
populated from the stellar initial mass function (IMF) by random sampling over
the mass range 0.01 < m < 150 M_sol without being constrained by the cluster
mass, M_ecl. The data reveal a partition of the sample into lowest mass objects
(M_ecl < 10^2 M_sol), moderate mass clusters (10^2 M_sol < M_ecl < 10^3 M_sol)
and rich clusters above 10^3 M_sol. Additionally, there is a plateau of a
constant maximal star mass (m_max ~ 25 M_sol) for clusters with masses between
10^3 M_sol and 4 10^3 M_sol. Statistical tests of this data set reveal that the
hypothesis of random sampling from the IMF between 0.01 and 150 M_sol is highly
unlikely for star clusters more massive than 10^2 M_sol with a probability of p
~ 2 10^-7 for the objects with M_ecl between 10^2 M_sol and 10^3 M_sol and p ~
3 10^-9 for the more massive star clusters. Also, the spread of m_max values at
a given M_ecl is smaller than expected from random sampling. We suggest that
the basic physical process able to explain this dependence of stellar inventory
of a star cluster on its mass may be the interplay between stellar feedback and
the binding energy of the cluster-forming molecular cloud core. Given these
results, it would follow that an integrated galactic initial mass function
(IGIMF) sampled from such clusters would automatically be steeper in comparison
to the IMF within individual star clusters.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
The German National Registry of Primary Immunodeficiencies (2012-2017)
Introduction: The German PID-NET registry was founded in 2009, serving as the first national registry of patients with primary immunodeficiencies (PID) in Germany. It is part of the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) registry. The primary purpose of the registry is to gather data on the epidemiology, diagnostic delay, diagnosis, and treatment of PIDs.
Methods: Clinical and laboratory data was collected from 2,453 patients from 36 German PID centres in an online registry. Data was analysed with the software StataÂź and Excel.
Results: The minimum prevalence of PID in Germany is 2.72 per 100,000 inhabitants. Among patients aged 1â25, there was a clear predominance of males. The median age of living patients ranged between 7 and 40 years, depending on the respective PID. Predominantly antibody disorders were the most prevalent group with 57% of all 2,453 PID patients (including 728 CVID patients). A gene defect was identified in 36% of patients. Familial cases were observed in 21% of patients. The age of onset for presenting symptoms ranged from birth to late adulthood (range 0â88 years). Presenting symptoms comprised infections (74%) and immune dysregulation (22%). Ninety-three patients were diagnosed without prior clinical symptoms. Regarding the general and clinical diagnostic delay, no PID had undergone a slight decrease within the last decade. However, both, SCID and hyper IgE- syndrome showed a substantial improvement in shortening the time between onset of symptoms and genetic diagnosis. Regarding treatment, 49% of all patients received immunoglobulin G (IgG) substitution (70%âsubcutaneous; 29%âintravenous; 1%âunknown). Three-hundred patients underwent at least one hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Five patients had gene therapy.
Conclusion: The German PID-NET registry is a precious tool for physicians, researchers, the pharmaceutical industry, politicians, and ultimately the patients, for whom the outcomes will eventually lead to a more timely diagnosis and better treatment
