Naturalistic Affective Expression Classification by a Multi-Stage Approach Based on Hidden Markov Models
In naturalistic behaviour, the affective states of a person
change at a rate much slower than the typical rate at which video or
audio is recorded (e.g. 25fps for video). Hence, there is a high probability
that consecutive recorded instants of expressions represent a same
affective content. In this paper, a multi-stage automatic affective expression
recognition system is proposed which uses Hidden Markov Models
(HMMs) to take into account this temporal relationship and finalize the
classification process. The hidden states of the HMMs are associated
with the levels of affective dimensions to convert the classification problem
into a best path finding problem in HMM. The system was tested on
the audio data of the Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge (AVEC) datasets
showing performance significantly above that of a one-stage classification
system that does not take into account the temporal relationship, as well
as above the baseline set provided by this Challenge. Due to the generality
of the approach, this system could be applied to other types of
affective modalities
ATLASGAL - towards a complete sample of massive star forming clumps
By matching infrared-selected, massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and compact HII regions in the Red MSX Source survey to massive clumps found in the submillimetre ATLASGAL (APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy) survey, we have identified ~1000 embedded young massive stars between 280{ring operator} <lPeer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Advances in MASELTOV – Serious Games in a Mobile Ecology of Services for Social Inclusion and Empowerment of Recent Immigrants
Immigration imposes a range of challenges with the risk of social exclusion from the information society (Halfman 1998), such as, getting into communication with the local society and understanding the culture of their host nation. Failure to address these challenges can lead to difficulties in the frame of integrating into the society of the host country, leading to fragmented communities and a range of social issues. As part of a comprehensive suite of services for immigrants, the European project seeks to provide both practical tools and learning services via mobile devices, providing a readily usable resource for immigrants. We introduce recent results, such as the game-based learning aspect of the MASELTOV project is introduced, with the rationale behind its design presented. In doing so, the benefits and implications of mobile platforms and emergent data capture techniques for game-based learning are discussed, as are methods for putting engaging gameplay at the forefront of the experience whilst relying on rich data capture and analysis to provide an effective learning solution
Decoherence and entanglement degradation of a qubit-qutrit system in non-inertial frames
We study the effect of decoherence on a qubit-qutrit system under the
influence of global, local and multilocal decoherence in non-inertial frames.
We show that the entanglement sudden death can be avoided in non-inertial
frames in the presence of amplitude damping, depolarizing and phase damping
channels. However, degradation of entanglement is seen due to Unruh effect. It
is shown that for lower level of decoherence, the depolarizing channel degrades
the entanglement more heavily as compared to the amplitude damping and phase
damping channels. However, for higher values of decoherence parameters,
amplitude damping channel heavily degrades the entanglement of the hybrid
system. Further more, no ESD is seen for any value of Rob's acceleration.Comment: 16 pages, 5 .eps figures, 1 table; Quantum Information Processing,

Ascomycetous yeast species recovered from grapes damaged by honeydew and sour rot
Aims: To identify ascomycetous yeasts recovered from sound and damaged
grapes by the presence of honeydew or sour rot.
Methods and Results: In sound grapes, the mean yeast counts ranged from
3.20 ± 1.04 log CFU g-1 to 5.87 ± 0.64 log CFU g-1. In honeydew grapes, the
mean counts ranged from 3.88 ± 0.80 log CFU g-1 to 6.64 ± 0.77 log CFU g-1.
In sour rot grapes counts varied between 6.34 ± 1.03 and 7.68 ± 0.38 log
CFU g-1. Hanseniaspora uvarum was the most frequent species from sound
samples. In both types of damage, the most frequent species were Candida vanderwaltii,
H. uvarum and Zygoascus hellenicus. The latter species was recovered
in high frequency because of the utilization of the selective medium DBDM
(Dekkera ⁄ Brettanomyces differential medium). The scarce isolation frequency of
the wine spoilage species Zygosaccharomyces bailii (in sour rotten grapes) and
Zygosaccharomyces bisporus (in honeydew affected grapes) could only be
demonstrated by the use of the selective medium ZDM (Zygosaccharomyces
differential medium).
Conclusions: The isolation of several species only from damaged grapes indicates
that damage constituted the main factor determining yeast diversity. The
utilization of selective media is required for eliciting the recovery of potentially
wine spoilage species.
Significance and Impact of the Study: The impact of damaged grapes in the yeast ecology of grapes has been underestimate
Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions
Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma
gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their
decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma
gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have
been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) <
0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV
at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Magnetism and the absence of superconductivity in the praseodymium–silicon system doped with carbon and boron
We searched for new structural, magnetic and superconductivity phases in the Pr-Si system using high-pressure high-temperature and arc melting syntheses. Both high and low Si concentration areas of the phase diagram were explored. Although a similar approach in the La-Si system produced new stable superconducting phases, in the Pr-Si system we did not find any new superconductors. At low Si concentrations, the arc-melted samples were doped with C or B. It was found that addition of C gave rise to multiple previously unknown ferromagnetic phases. Furthermore, X-ray refinement of the undoped samples confirmed the existence of the so far elusive Pr3Si 2 phase. © 2013 Elsevier B.V
Search for oscillations using inclusive lepton events
A search for Bs oscillations is performed using a sample of semileptonic b-hadron decays collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991-1995. Compared to previous inclusive lepton analyses, the prop er time resolution and b-flavour mistag rate are significantly improved. Additional sensitivity to Bs mixing is obtained by identifying subsamples of events having a Bs purity which is higher than the average for the whole data sample. Unbinned maximum likelihood amplitude fits are performed to derive a lower limit of Dms>9.5 ps-1 at 95% CL. Combining with the ALEPH Ds based analyses yields Dms>9.6 ps-1 at 95% CL.A search for B0s oscillations is performed using a sample of semileptonic b-hadron decays collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991-1995. Limit on oscillation using a jet charge method
A lower limit is set on the B_{s}^{0} meson oscillation parameter \Delta m_{s} using data collected from 1991 to 1994 by the ALEPH detector. Events with a high transverse momentum lepton and a reconstructed secondary vertex are used. The high transverse momentum leptons are produced mainly by b hadron decays, and the sign of the lepton indicates the particle/antiparticle final state in decays of neutral B mesons. The initial state is determined by a jet charge technique using both sides of the event. A maximum likelihood method is used to set a lower limit of \, \Delta m_{s}. The 95\% confidence level lower limit on \Delta m_s ranges between 5.2 and 6.5(\hbar/c^{2})~ps^{-1} when the fraction of b quarks from Z^0 decays that form B_{s}^{0} mesons is varied from 8\% to 16\%. Assuming that the B_{s}^{0} fraction is 12\%, the lower limit would be \Delta m_{s} 6.1(\hbar/c^{2})~ps^{-1} at 95\% confidence level. For x_s = \Delta m_s \, \tau_{B_s}, this limit also gives x_s 8.8 using the B_{s}^{0} lifetime of \tau_{B_s} = 1.55 \pm 0.11~ps and shifting the central value of \tau_{B_s} down by 1\sigma
