    A straightforward route to tetrachloroauric acid from gold metal and molecular chlorine for nanoparticle synthesis

Aqueous solutions of tetrachloroauric acid of high purity and stability were synthesised using the known reaction of gold metal with chlorine gas. The straightforward procedure developed here allows the resulting solution to be used directly for gold nanoparticle synthesis. The procedure involves bubbling chlorine gas through pure water containing a pellet of gold. The reaction is quantitative and progressed at a satisfactory rate at 50 °C. The gold(III) chloride solutions produced by this method show no evidence of returning to metallic gold over at least twelve months. This procedure also provides a straightforward method to determine the concentration of the resulting solution using the initial mass of gold and volume of water

    Influence of Bound versus Non-Bound Stabilizing Molecules on the Thermal Stability of Gold Nanoparticles

Knowledge concerning the sintering behavior of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) allows for improved nanomaterials for applications such as printed electronics, catalysis and sensing. In this study, we examined the ability of a range of compounds to stabilize AuNPs against thermal sintering and compared compounds with and without functional groups that anchor the molecules to the nanoparticle surface. Thermal stability was characterized in terms of the temperature of the sintering event (TSE) as well as thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. We show that anchored stabilizing compounds with high thermal stability are effective at preventing the sintering of AuNPs until the decomposition of the compound. A TSE of 390 °C was achieved using 1-pyrenebutanethiol as stabilizer. Of the unanchored stabilizers, which were combined with butanethiol-capped AuNPs, two were found to be particularly effective: oleylamine (TSE ≈ 300 °C) and a perylenedicarboximide derivative (TSE ≈ 540 °C), the latter conferring an unprecedented level of thermal stability on ligand-stabilized AuNPs. When selecting stabilizers without anchoring groups, our results demonstrate the importance of choosing those that have an affinity with the capping ligands on the AuNPs to ensure a uniform mixture of AuNPs and stabilizer within a film

    Superparasitism Drives Heritable Symbiont Epidemiology and Host Sex Ratio in a Wasp

    Heritable microbial symbionts have profound impacts upon the biology of their arthropod hosts. Whilst our current understanding of the dynamics of these symbionts is typically cast within a framework of vertical transmission only, horizontal transmission has been observed in a number of cases. For instance, several symbionts can transmit horizontally when their parasitoid hosts share oviposition patches with uninfected conspecifics, a phenomenon called superparasitism. Despite this, horizontal transmission, and the host contact structures that facilitates it, have not been considered in heritable symbiont epidemiology. Here, we tested for the importance of host contact, and resulting horizontal transmission, for the epidemiology of a male-killing heritable symbiont (Arsenophonus nasoniae) in parasitoid wasp hosts. We observed that host contact through superparasitism is necessary for this symbiont’s spread in populations of its primary host Nasonia vitripennis, such that when superparasitism rates are high, A. nasoniae almost reaches fixation, causes highly female biased population sex ratios and consequently causes local host extinction. We further tested if natural interspecific variation in superparasitism behaviours predicted symbiont dynamics among parasitoid species. We found that A. nasoniae was maintained in laboratory populations of a closely related set of Nasonia species, but declined in other, more distantly related pteromalid hosts. The natural proclivity of a species to superparasitise was the primary factor determining symbiont persistence. Our results thus indicate that host contact behaviour is a key factor for heritable microbe dynamics when horizontal transmission is possible, and that ‘reproductive parasite’ phenotypes, such as male-killing, may be of secondary importance in the dynamics of such symbiont infections

    Remarkable thermal stability of gold nanoparticles functionalised with ruthenium phthalocyanine complexes

    © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd. A gold nanoparticle (AuNP) ruthenium phthalocyanine (RuPc) nanocomposite has been synthesised that exhibits high thermal stability. Electrical resistance measurements revealed that the nanocomposite is stable up to ∌320 °C. Examination of the nanocomposite and the RuPc stabiliser complex using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry show that the remarkable thermal stability is due to the RuPc molecules, which provide an effective barrier to sintering of the AuNPs

    Performance evaluation of prototype mechanical cassava harvester in three agro-ecological zones in Ghana

    Large-scale cassava harvesting, especially during the dry season, is a major constraint to its industrial demand and commercial production. Manual harvesting is slow and associated with drudgery and high root damage in the dry season. Research on mechanisation of cassava production is very low especially in the area of harvesting, and currently there exists no known functional mechanical cassava harvesters in Ghana. The main objective of the study was to test and evaluate mechanical cassava harvesting techniques in different agro-ecological zones in Ghana. Performance of two prototype mechanical harvesters (TEK MCH 2 and 6) was evaluated against manual harvesting methods for field capacity, efficiency and root damage using two cassava varieties, namely ‘Afisiafi’ and ‘Bankyehemaa’, on ridged and flat landforms. Results from field trials showed prototype harvesters weighing 268 – 310 kg can achieve optimum performance on ridged landforms. When harvested mechanically, tuber damage ranges from 16 per cent to 27 per cent for both ‘Afisiafi’ and ‘Bankyehemaa’. The mechanical harvester works best on dry fields with moisture content from one per cent to 17 per cent db containing minimum trash or weeds, and develops average drafts of 10.86 kN whilst penetrating depths from 13 to 40 cm. Optimum mechanical harvesting performance was achieved at tractor speeds of 5 – 8 km h-1, fuel consumption of 15 – 19 litres ha-1, and a field capacity of 2 h ha-1. After mechanical harvesting, the field is left ploughed with savings on fuel, time and production costs. It is, however, recommended to test the harvesters for wear and durability in major agro-ecological zones and through a wide range of soil moisture regimes in Ghana to support nationwide adoption

    Vestibular schwannoma: role of conservative management

    Objective: To assess the outcome of conservative management of vestibular schwannoma.Study design: Observational study. Setting: Tertiary referral centre.Patients: Four hundred and thirty-six patients with vestibular schwannoma (490 tumours), including 327 sporadic tumours and 163 tumours in 109 patients with neurofibromatosis type two.Main outcome measures: The relationship of tumour growth to tumour size at presentation, and to certain demographic features.Results: The initial tumour size was significantly larger in the neurofibromatosis type two group (11 mm) than in the sporadic vestibular schwannoma group (5.1 mm). In both groups, 68 per cent of tumours did not grow during follow up (mean 3.6 years; range one to 14 years). The mean growth rate was 1.1 mm/year (range 0-15 mm/year) for sporadic tumours and 1.7 mm/year (range 0-18 mm/year) for neurofibromatosis type two tumours. The tumour growth rate correlated positively with tumour size in the sporadic tumour group, and correlated negatively with age in the neurofibromatosis type two group.Conclusion: Two-thirds of vestibular schwannomas did not grow. Radiological surveillance is an acceptable approach in carefully selected patients. Once a sporadic vestibular schwannoma reaches 2 cm in intracranial diameter, it is likely to continue growing. We do not recommend conservative management for sporadic tumours with an intracranial diameter of 1.5 cm or more.     Emergent quantum confinement at topological insulator surfaces

    Bismuth-chalchogenides are model examples of three-dimensional topological insulators. Their ideal bulk-truncated surface hosts a single spin-helical surface state, which is the simplest possible surface electronic structure allowed by their non-trivial Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 topology. They are therefore widely regarded ideal templates to realize the predicted exotic phenomena and applications of this topological surface state. However, real surfaces of such compounds, even if kept in ultra-high vacuum, rapidly develop a much more complex electronic structure whose origin and properties have proved controversial. Here, we demonstrate that a conceptually simple model, implementing a semiconductor-like band bending in a parameter-free tight-binding supercell calculation, can quantitatively explain the entire measured hierarchy of electronic states. In combination with circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments, we further uncover a rich three-dimensional spin texture of this surface electronic system, resulting from the non-trivial topology of the bulk band structure. Moreover, our study reveals how the full surface-bulk connectivity in topological insulators is modified by quantum confinement.Comment: 9 pages, including supplementary information, 4+4 figures.     Screening and assessment tools for gaming disorder: A comprehensive systematic review

    The inclusion of gaming disorder (GD) as an official diagnosis in the ICD-11 was a significant milestone for the field. However, the optimal measurement approaches for GD are currently unclear. This comprehensive systematic review aimed to identify and evaluate all available English-language GD tools and their corresponding evidence. A search of PsychINFO, PsychArticles, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar identified 32 tools employed in 320 studies (N = 462,249 participants). The evaluation framework examined tools in relation to: (1) conceptual and practical considerations; (2) alignment with DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria; (3) type and quantity of studies and samples; and (4) psychometric properties. The evaluation showed that GD instrumentation has proliferated, with 2.5 tools, on average, published annually since 2013. Coverage of DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria was inconsistent, especially for the criterion of continued use despite harm. Tools converge on the importance of screening for impaired control over gaming and functional impairment. Overall, no single tool was found to be clearly superior, but the AICA-Sgaming, GAS-7, IGDT-10, IGDS9-SF, and Lemmens IGD-9 scales had greater evidential support for their psychometric properties.     An Investigation into the Oil Transport and Starvation of Piston-Ring Pack

    In order to accurately predict the lubricant film thickness and generated friction in any tribological contact, it is important to determine appropriate boundary conditions, taking into account the oil availability and extent of starvation. This paper presents a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model of a piston ring pack for prediction of lubricant film thickness, friction and total power loss. The model takes into account starvation caused by reverse flow at the conjunctional inlet wedge, and applied to a ring pack, comprising a compression and scraper ring. Inlet boundaries are calculated for an engine cycle of a four-cylinder, four-stroke gasoline engine operating at 1500 r/min with conditions pertaining to the New European Drive Cycle. The analysis shows the two main sources of starvation: first, due to a physical lack of inlet meniscus and second, due to reverse flow at the inlet wedge significantly affecting the prevailing conditions from the generally assumed idealised boundary conditions. Such an approach has not hitherto been reported in literature

    Nature of magnetism in thiol-capped gold nanoparticles investigated with Muon spin rotation

    © 2018 Author(s). Muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements show clear evidence for magnetism in 2.2 nm gold nanoparticles capped with butanethiol. At low temperatures (1.8 K), there is significant spin relaxation which decreases as a function of both the applied longitudinal magnetic field and increasing temperature. The results indicate that there are spatially inhomogeneous electronic moments that fluctuate with a wide distribution of correlation times. Possible explanations are discussed
