Fuzzy Control Design for a Class of Nonlinear Network Control System: Helicopter Case Study
This paper presents a fuzzy control approach to a helicopter MIMO nonlinear system, implemented on a Networked Control System, as case study. For this, a hardware-in-the-Loop implementation is developed using several multi-channel A/D Cards, integrated to a computer network system. Variant time delays are considered over Ethernet and CANBUS networks. Fuzzy logic is used to deal with the complexity of the integrated computer network as well as with the dynamics of the system. Two fuzzy logic control systems are coupled for both signals of the helicopter case study: yaw and pitch. Both these tend to concentrate around desired references, considering variant time delays
Synthesis of Nylon 6/Modified Carbon Black Nanocomposites for Application in Uric Acid Adsorption
High uric acid levels cause different clinic conditions. One of them is hyperuricemia, which leads to kidney damage. A solution for eliminating uric acid in the blood is by hemodialysis, which is performed using nanocomposite membranes. In this work, Nylon 6 nanocomposites were synthesized with modified carbon black (MCB), which were considered candidate materials for hemodialysis membranes. The modification of carbon black was made with citric acid using the variable-frequency ultrasound method. The new MCB was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dispersion tests. Nylon 6/MCB nanocomposites were processed using the ultrasound-assisted melt-extrusion method to improve the dispersion procedure of the nanoparticles. The Nylon 6/MCB nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, TGA, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These were assessed for the absorption of toxins and hemocompatibility. MBC and nanocomposites showed excellent uric acid removal (78â82%) and hemocompatibility (1.6â1.8%). These results suggest that Nylon 6/MCB nanocomposites with low loading percentages can be used on a large scale without compatibility problems with blood
Un examen actualizado de la percepción de las barreras para la implementación de la farmacogenómica y la utilidad de los pares fårmaco/gen en América Latina y el Caribe
La farmacogenĂłmica (PGx) se considera un campo emergente en los paĂses en desarrollo. La investigaciĂłn sobre PGx en la regiĂłn de AmĂ©rica Latina y el Caribe (ALC) sigue siendo escasa, con informaciĂłn limitada en algunas poblaciones. Por lo tanto, las extrapolaciones son complicadas, especialmente en poblaciones mixtas. En este trabajo, revisamos y analizamos el conocimiento farmacogenĂłmico entre la comunidad cientĂfica y clĂnica de ALC y examinamos las barreras para la aplicaciĂłn clĂnica. Realizamos una bĂșsqueda de publicaciones y ensayos clĂnicos en este campo en todo el mundo y evaluamos la contribuciĂłn de ALC. A continuaciĂłn, realizamos una encuesta regional estructurada que evaluĂł una lista de 14 barreras potenciales para la aplicaciĂłn clĂnica de biomarcadores en funciĂłn de su importancia. AdemĂĄs, se analizĂł una lista emparejada de 54 genes/fĂĄrmacos para determinar una asociaciĂłn entre los biomarcadores y la respuesta a la medicina genĂłmica. Esta encuesta se comparĂł con una encuesta anterior realizada en 2014 para evaluar el progreso en la regiĂłn. Los resultados de la bĂșsqueda indicaron que los paĂses de AmĂ©rica Latina y el Caribe han contribuido con el 3,44% del total de publicaciones y el 2,45% de los ensayos clĂnicos relacionados con PGx en todo el mundo hasta el momento. Un total de 106 profesionales de 17 paĂses respondieron a la encuesta. Se identificaron seis grandes grupos de obstĂĄculos. A pesar de los continuos esfuerzos de la regiĂłn en la Ășltima dĂ©cada, la principal barrera para la implementaciĂłn de PGx en ALC sigue siendo la misma, la "necesidad de directrices, procesos y protocolos para la aplicaciĂłn clĂnica de la farmacogenĂ©tica/farmacogenĂłmica". Las cuestiones de coste-eficacia se consideran factores crĂticos en la regiĂłn. Los puntos relacionados con la reticencia de los clĂnicos son actualmente menos relevantes. SegĂșn los resultados de la encuesta, los pares gen/fĂĄrmaco mejor clasificados (96%-99%) y percibidos como importantes fueron CYP2D6/tamoxifeno, CYP3A5/tacrolimus, CYP2D6/opioides, DPYD/fluoropirimidinas, TMPT/tiopurinas, CYP2D6/antidepresivos tricĂclicos, CYP2C19/antidepresivos tricĂclicos, NUDT15/tiopurinas, CYP2B6/efavirenz y CYP2C19/clopidogrel. En conclusiĂłn, aunque la contribuciĂłn global de los paĂses de ALC sigue siendo baja en el campo del PGx, se ha observado una mejora relevante en la regiĂłn. A total of 106 professionals from 17 countries answered the survey. Six major groups of barriers were identified. Despite the regionâs continuous efforts in the last decade, the primary barrier to PGx implementation in LAC remains the same, the âneed for guidelines, processes, and protocols for the clinical application of pharmacogenetics/pharmacogenomicsâ. Cost-effectiveness issues are considered critical factors in the region. Items related to the reluctance of clinicians are currently less relevant. Based on the survey results, the highest ranked (96%â99%) gene/drug pairs perceived as important were CYP2D6/tamoxifen, CYP3A5/tacrolimus, CYP2D6/opioids, DPYD/fluoropyrimidines, TMPT/thiopurines, CYP2D6/tricyclic antidepressants, CYP2C19/tricyclic antidepressants, NUDT15/thiopurines, CYP2B6/efavirenz, and CYP2C19/clopidogrel. In conclusion, although the global contribution of LAC countries remains low in the PGx field, a relevant improvement has been observed in the region. The perception of the usefulness of PGx tests in biomedical community has drastically changed, raising awareness among physicians, which suggests a promising future in the clinical applications of PGx in LAC

Yeasts associated with the production of distilled alcoholic beverages
Distilled alcoholic beverages are produced firstly by fermenting sugars emanating from cereal starches (in the case of whiskies), sucrose-rich plants (in the case of rums), fructooligosaccharide-rich plants (in the case of tequila) or from fruits (in the case of brandies). Traditionally, such fermentations were conducted in a spontaneous fashion, relying on indigenous microbiota, including wild yeasts. In modern practices, selected strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are employed to produce high levels of ethanol together with numerous secondary metabolites (eg. higher alcohols, esters, carbonyls etc.) which greatly influence the final flavour and aroma characteristics of spirits following distillation of the fermented wash. Therefore, distillers, like winemakers, must carefully choose their yeast strain which will be very important in providing the alcohol content and the sensory profiles of spirit beverages. This Chapter discusses yeast and fermentation aspects associated with the production of selected distilled spirits and highlights similarities and differences with the production of wine
EURECâŽA
The science guiding the EURECâŽA campaign and its measurements is presented. EURECâŽA comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic â eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EURECâŽA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200âkm) and larger (500âkm) scales, roughly 400âh of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10â000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the airâsea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EURECâŽA explored â from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation â are presented along with an overview of EURECâŽA's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. New copper carboxylate pyrene dimers: synthesis, crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis and electrochemical characterization
Two new copper dimers, namely, bis(dimethyl sulfoxide)tetrakis(ÎŒ-pyrene-1-carboxylato)dicopper(CuâCu), [Cu2(C17H9O2)4(C2H6OS)2] or [Cu2(pyr-COOâ)4(DMSO)2] (1), and bis(dimethylformamide)tetrakis(ÎŒ-pyrene-1-carboxylato)dicopper(CuâCu), [Cu2(C17H9O2)4(C3H7NO)2] or [Cu2(pyr-COOâ)4(DMF)2] (2) (pyr = pyrene), were synthesized from the reaction of pyrene-1-carboxylic acid, copper(II) nitrate and triethylamine from solvents DMSO and DMF, respectively. While 1 crystallized in the space group P\overline{1}, the crystal structure of 2 is in space group P21/n. The Cu atoms have octahedral geometries, with four oxygen atoms from carboxylate pyrene ligands occupying the equatorial positions, a solvent molecule coordinating at one of the axial positions, and a Cu...Cu contact in the opposite position. The packing in the crystal structures exhibits ÏâÏ stacking interactions and short contacts through the solvent molecules. The Hirshfeld surfaces and two-dimensional fingerprint plots were generated for both compounds to better understand the intermolecular interactions and the contribution of heteroatoms from the solvent ligands to the crystal packing. In addition, a Cu2+/Cu1+ quasi-reversible redox process was identified for compound 2 using cyclic voltammetry that accounts for a diffusion-controlled electron-donation process to the Cu dimer
