    Questioning public green space & affordable housing in times of densifying cities

    This thesis examines the perceived relationship between public green space inequality in districts and how that is perceived to affect housing prices as greeneries value in cities has increased. The purpose is to investigate these perceived values and provoke questions in the thesis on how planning is experienced by active planners in the profession and how green spaces are viewed by residents. These connections are investigated with the help of a case study in two urban districts in Uppsala municipality. Eriksberg and Norby are the districts that are investigated, these are in the western part of Uppsala and differ from each other by, socio-economic background of the residents and housing types, form and among other things. The districts are chosen to be able to look at the perceived issues in different forms of urban districts. And in Eriksberg it is discussed what the consequences potentially be as it faces densification with new housing and renovation of existing homes. Affordable housing and methods to reduce segregation and prevent gentrification are discussed concerning the development and the districts as they are today from different perceptions. Meanwhile discussing the work against segregation, it is also discussed how the planners from Uppsala municipality are viewing and working with social sustainability in the correlation to green spaces decreasing. To be able to investigate these connections, empirical study, interviews with planners from Uppsala municipality and questionnaires in which residents in both Eriksberg and Norby have participated are used. Results from the methods combined with theories from researchers on the same subject are discussed at the end of the study. Conclusions drawn from a planner's perspective are that they need to work more actively with affordable housing. However, the planners never present a concrete plan or actions they are willing to take to deal with the problems that exist. The residents in the area feel strongly about nature and value it, however, the future development in Eriksberg is making the residents unsure of what will be left of nature. The residents are also unsure if they will afford to still live in Eriksberg after the development as the rents will increase. The planners say that everybody will not afford but most will. The quality of green spaces is questioned by the residents on how the municipality will act on the issue due to the lack of plans on how planners will implement socially sustainable solutions. Eriksberg is perceived to be engaged in questions that involve humans and biodiversity, meanwhile, residents in Norby are only engaged in questions that involve a change in their district, this is a strong sign that Norby is and wants to be segregated from other districts. Planners together with the municipality's active choice and stance on making housing accessible to all will reflect how segregated districts will become or remain in the future

    Laser treatment of drusen to prevent progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration.

    BACKGROUND: Drusen are amorphous yellowish deposits beneath the sensory retina. People with drusen, particularly large drusen, are at higher risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The most common complication in AMD is choroidal neovascularisation (CNV), the growth of new blood vessels in the centre of the macula. The risk of CNV is higher among patients who are already affected by CNV in one eye.It has been observed clinically that laser photocoagulation of drusen leads to their disappearance and may prevent the occurrence of advanced disease (CNV or geographic atrophy) associated with visual loss. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness and adverse effects of laser photocoagulation of drusen in AMD. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE and EMBASE on 14 November 2008. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of laser treatment of drusen in AMD in which laser treatment had been compared with no intervention or sham treatment. Two types of trials were included. Some trials studied one eye of each patient (unilateral studies); other studies recruited patients with bilateral drusen and randomised one eye to photocoagulation or control and the fellow eye to the other group. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors independently selected studies and extracted data. We pooled data from unilateral and bilateral studies using a random-effects model. For the bilateral studies, we estimated the within-patient correlation coefficient from one study and assumed it was valid for the others. MAIN RESULTS: We found nine studies which randomised 2216 people: four unilateral trials, three bilateral trials and two trials that included both a unilateral and a bilateral study arm.Overall, the studies were of moderate quality. Only half of the trials reported adequate allocation sequence generation, allocation concealment and masking of visual acuity outcome assessors.Although two (of the nine) studies reported significant drusen disappearance at two years, photocoagulation did not appear to affect the development of CNV at two years follow up (nine studies, 1767 people followed up, odds ratio (OR) 1.04, 95% CI 0.71 to 1.51) or the loss of three or more lines of visual acuity (six studies, 1628 people followed up, OR 1.17, 95% CI 0.75 to 1.82). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: The trials included in this review confirm the clinical observation that laser photocoagulation of drusen leads to their disappearance. However, there is no evidence that this subsequently results in a reduction in the risk of developing CNV, geographic atrophy or visual acuity loss

    Photodynamic Therapy Treatment for Eyes with Drusenoid Pigment Epithelium Detachment

    We report the clinical course of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in a patient with drusenoid pigment epithelium detachment (PED). A patient with drusenoid PED underwent PDT follow-up was carried out at one week, one month, three months, six months and one year after treatment. Fundus exam, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography were performed. After the PDT, drusen and PED were gradually diminished over one year. However, pure serous PED eventually developed at the same location of the drusenoid PED. The results of the PDT, on drusenoid PED, were initially effective, but not completely successful. Therefore, PDT may be considered as an alternative treatment option for drusenoid PED

    A Method of Drusen Measurement Based on the Geometry of Fundus Reflectance

    BACKGROUND: The hallmarks of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the developed world, are the subretinal deposits known as drusen. Drusen identification and measurement play a key role in clinical studies of this disease. Current manual methods of drusen measurement are laborious and subjective. Our purpose was to expedite clinical research with an accurate, reliable digital method. METHODS: An interactive semi-automated procedure was developed to level the macular background reflectance for the purpose of morphometric analysis of drusen. 12 color fundus photographs of patients with age-related macular degeneration and drusen were analyzed. After digitizing the photographs, the underlying background pattern in the green channel was leveled by an algorithm based on the elliptically concentric geometry of the reflectance in the normal macula: the gray scale values of all structures within defined elliptical boundaries were raised sequentially until a uniform background was obtained. Segmentation of drusen and area measurements in the central and middle subfields (1000 μm and 3000 μm diameters) were performed by uniform thresholds. Two observers using this interactive semi-automated software measured each image digitally. The mean digital measurements were compared to independent stereo fundus gradings by two expert graders (stereo Grader 1 estimated the drusen percentage in each of the 24 regions as falling into one of four standard broad ranges; stereo Grader 2 estimated drusen percentages in 1% to 5% intervals). RESULTS: The mean digital area measurements had a median standard deviation of 1.9%. The mean digital area measurements agreed with stereo Grader 1 in 22/24 cases. The 95% limits of agreement between the mean digital area measurements and the more precise stereo gradings of Grader 2 were -6.4 % to +6.8 % in the central subfield and -6.0 % to +4.5 % in the middle subfield. The mean absolute differences between the digital and stereo gradings 2 were 2.8 +/- 3.4% in the central subfield and 2.2 +/- 2.7% in the middle subfield. CONCLUSIONS: Semi-automated, supervised drusen measurements may be done reproducibly and accurately with adaptations of commercial software. This technique for macular image analysis has potential for use in clinical research

    Localisation of logistics preparedness in international humanitarian organisations

    __Purpose:__ To meet the rising global needs, the humanitarian community has signed off on making a strategic change toward more localisation, which commonly refers to the empowerment of national and local actors in humanitarian assistance. However, to this date, actual initiatives for localisation are rare. To enhance understanding of the phenomenon, the authors explore localisation of logistics preparedness capacities and obstacles to its implementation. The authors particularly take the perspective of the international humanitarian organisation (IHO) community as they are expected to implement the localisation strategy. __Design/methodology/approach:__ A phenomenon-driven, exploratory and qualitative study was conducted. Data collection included in-depth interviews with 28 experienced humanitarian professionals. __Findings:__ The findings showed the ambiguity inherent in the localisation strategy with largely different views on four important dimensions. Particularly, the interviewees differ about strengthening external actors or internal national/local offices. The resulting framework visualises the gap between strategy formulation and implementation, which forms major obstacles to the localisation aims. __Research limitations/implications:__ Further research is required to support the advancement of localisation of logistics preparedness capacities. Important aspects for future research include triangulation of results, other stakeholder perspectives and the influence of context. __Practical implications:__ The authors add to the important debate surrounding localisation by offering remedies to overcoming obstacles to strategy implementation. Further, the authors’ proposed framework offers a language to precisely describe the ways in which IHOs (should) view localisation of logistics preparedness capacities and its operationalisation. __Originality/value:__ To the best of authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first academic article on localisation within the humanitarian logistics context

    The effect of agitation speed, enzyme loading and substrate concentration on enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose from brewer’s spent grain

    Brewer’s spent grain components (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) were fractionated in a two-step chemical pretreatment process using dilute sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions. The cellulose pulp produced was hydrolyzed with a cellulolytic complex, Celluclast 1.5 L, at 45 ºC to convert the cellulose into glucose. Several conditions were examined: agitation speed (100, 150 and 200 rpm), enzyme loading (5, 25 and 45 FPU/g substrate), and substrate concentration (2, 5 and 8% w/v), according to a 2 3 full factorial design aiming to maximize the glucose yield. The obtained results were interpreted by analysis of variance and response surface methodology. The optimal conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis of brewer’s spent grain were identified as 100 rpm, 45 FPU/g and 2% w/v substrate. Under these conditions, a glucose yield of 93.1% and a cellulose conversion (into glucose and cellobiose) of 99.4% was achieved.     Quantification of Visual Field Loss in Age-Related Macular Degeneration

    Background An evaluation of standard automated perimetry (SAP) and short wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP) for the central 10–2 visual field test procedure in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is presented in order to determine methods of quantifying the central sensitivity loss in patients at various stages of AMD. Methods 10–2 SAP and SWAP Humphrey visual fields and stereoscopic fundus photographs were collected in 27 eyes of 27 patients with AMD and 22 eyes of 22 normal subjects. Results Mean Deviation and Pattern Standard Deviation (PSD) varied significantly with stage of disease in SAP (both p<0.001) and SWAP (both p<0.001), but post hoc analysis revealed overlap of functional values among stages. In SWAP, indices of focal loss were more sensitive to detecting differences in AMD from normal. SWAP defects were greater in depth and area than those in SAP. Central sensitivity (within 1°) changed by −3.9 and −4.9 dB per stage in SAP and SWAP, respectively. Based on defect maps, an AMD Severity Index was derived. Conclusions Global indices of focal loss were more sensitive to detecting early stage AMD from normal. The SWAP sensitivity decline with advancing stage of AMD was greater than in SAP. A new AMD Severity Index quantifies visual field defects on a continuous scale. Although not all patients are suitable for SWAP examinations, it is of value as a tool in research studies of visual loss in AMD
