We report the theoretical investigations on the giant magnetocaloric compound MnFeP0.45As0.55. The magnetic state equation used takes into account the magnetoelastic effect that leads the magnetic system to order under first order paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition. The model parameters were determined from the magnetization data adjustment and used to calculate the magnetocaloric thermodynamic quantities. The theoretical calculations are compared with the available experimental data.709944101-094410-5Yu, B.F., Gao, Q., Zhang, B., Mang, X.Z., Chen, Z., (2003) Int. J. A small universe after all?

The cosmic microwave background radiation allows us to measure both the geometry and topology of the universe. It has been argued that the COBE-DMR data already rule out models that are multiply connected on scales smaller than the particle horizon. Here we show the opposite is true: compact (small) hyperbolic universes are favoured over their infinite counterparts. For a density parameter of Omega_o=0.3, the compact models are a better fit to COBE-DMR (relative likelihood ~20) and the large-scale structure data (sigma_8 increases by ~25%).Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 7 Figure

The Atp-dependent Rna Helicase Hrpb Plays An Important Role In Motility And Biofilm Formation In Xanthomonas Citri Subsp. Citri

Background: RNA helicases are enzymes that catalyze the separation of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) using the free energy of ATP binding and hydrolysis. DEAD/DEAH families participate in many different aspects of RNA metabolism, including RNA synthesis, RNA folding, RNA-RNA interactions, RNA localization and RNA degradation. Several important bacterial DEAD/DEAH-box RNA helicases have been extensively studied. In this study, we characterize the ATP-dependent RNA helicase encoded by the hrpB (XAC0293) gene using deletion and genetic complementation assays. We provide insights into the function of the hrpB gene in Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri by investigating the roles of hrpB in biofilm formation on abiotic surfaces and host leaves, cell motility, host virulence of the citrus canker bacterium and growth in planta. Results: The hrpB gene is highly conserved in the sequenced strains of Xanthomonas. Mutation of the hrpB gene (Δ;hrpB) resulted in a significant reduction in biofilms on abiotic surfaces and host leaves. Δ;hrpB also exhibited increased cell dispersion on solid medium plates. Δ;hrpB showed reduced adhesion on biotic and abiotic surfaces and delayed development in disease symptoms when sprayed on susceptible citrus leaves. Quantitative reverse transcription-PCR assays indicated that deletion of hrpB reduced the expression of four type IV pili genes. The transcriptional start site of fimA (XAC3241) was determined using rapid amplification of 5′-cDNA Ends (5′RACE). Based on the results of fimA mRNA structure predictions, the fimA 5′ UTR may contain three different loops. HrpB may be involved in alterations to the structure of fimA mRNA that promote the stability of fimA RNA. Conclusions: Our data show that hrpB is involved in adherence of Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri to different surfaces. In addition, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a DEAH RNA helicase has been implicated in the regulation of type IV pili in Xanthomonas. © 2016 Granato et al.16

Cholesterol-functionalized carvedilol-loaded PLGA nanoparticles: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor effects

    Get PDF
The inflammation has been identified as factor of tumor progression, which has increased the interest and use of molecules with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in the cancer treatment. In this study, the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor potentials of carvedilol was explored in a different approach. The cholesterol (CHO) was investigated as facilitated agent in the action of carvedilol-loaded nanoparticles. Different formulations exhibited spherical and stable nanoparticle with mean diameter size < 250 nm. The cholesterol changed the copolymer-drug interactions and the encapsulation efficiency. The in vitro cancer study was performed using murine colorectal cancer cell line (CT-26) to observe the cell viability and apoptosis on MTS assay and flow cytometry, respectively. The experiments have demonstrated that cholesterol improved the performance of drug-loaded nanoparticles, which was much better than free drug. The in vivo inflammation peritonitis model revealed that carvedilol-loaded nanoparticles increased the level of glutathione and leukocyte migration mainly when the functionalized drug-loaded nanoparticles were tested, in a lower dose than the free drug. As hypothesized, the experimental data suggest that cholesterol-functionalized carvedilol-loaded PLGA nanoparticles can be a novel and promising approach in the inflammation-induced cancer therapy since showed anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor effects.Graphical abstractRadiolog

    Tilt and phantom cosmology

We show that in tilting perfect fluid cosmological models with an ultra-radiative equation of state, generically the tilt becomes extreme at late times and, as the tilt instability sets in, observers moving with the tilting fluid will experience singular behaviour in which infinite expansion is reached within a finite proper time, similar to that of phantom cosmology (but without the need for exotic forms of matter).Comment: 9 pages, v2: more discussion, added reference

Antibacterial efficacy of Enterococcus microencapsulated bacteriocin on Listeria monocytogenes, Listeria innocua and Listeria ivanovi

This study focused on the microencapsulation of enterocin from Enterococcus durans (E. durans MF5) in whey powder (WP) using a spray-drying technique followed by the evaluation of how complexation can preserve the enterocin structure and antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogens. Crude enterocin samples (1 and 5%) were microencapsulated in 10% WP. The antimicrobial activity of unencapsulated (crude) enterocin and microencapsulated enterocin was tested against the target bacteria Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Listeria innocua, and Listeria ivanovi. The microencapsulation yields were 31.66% and 34.16% for concentrations of 1 and 5% enterocin, respectively. There was no significant difference between these concentrations. Microencapsulated enterocin was efficient for up to 12 h of cocultivation with Listeria sp., and the concentration required to inhibit the growth of target bacteria presented values of 6400 AU/ mL (arbitrary unit). Microencapsulated enterocin demonstrated enhanced efficacy against Listeria species and E. coli when compared with crude enterocin (p < 0.05). Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry results confirmed the presence of enterocin in the microparticles. Scanning electron microscopy showed cell damage of the target bacteria. The results showed that complexation with WP preserved enterocin antimicrobial activity during spray-drying, indicating its potential use as a food preservative. This work was supported by Fundação Araucária/Governo do Paraná—Brazil, UTFPR-Londrina Campus and State University of Londrina-Paraná. An alternative order parameter for the 4-state Potts model

    Get PDF
We have investigated the dynamic critical behavior of the two-dimensional 4-state Potts model using an alternative order parameter first used by Vanderzande [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. \textbf{20}, L549 (1987)] in the study of the Z(5) model. We have estimated the global persistence exponent θg\theta_g by following the time evolution of the probability P(t)P(t) that the considered order parameter does not change its sign up to time tt. We have also obtained the critical exponents θ\theta, zz, ν\nu, and β\beta using this alternative definition of the order parameter and our results are in complete agreement with available values found in literature.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
