Verification of Magnitude and Phase Responses in Fixed-Point Digital Filters
In the digital signal processing (DSP) area, one of the most important tasks
is digital filter design. Currently, this procedure is performed with the aid
of computational tools, which generally assume filter coefficients represented
with floating-point arithmetic. Nonetheless, during the implementation phase,
which is often done in digital signal processors or field programmable gate
arrays, the representation of the obtained coefficients can be carried out
through integer or fixed-point arithmetic, which often results in unexpected
behavior or even unstable filters. The present work addresses this issue and
proposes a verification methodology based on the digital-system verifier
(DSVerifier), with the goal of checking fixed-point digital filters w.r.t.
implementation aspects. In particular, DSVerifier checks whether the number of
bits used in coefficient representation will result in a filter with the same
features specified during the design phase. Experimental results show that
errors regarding frequency response and overflow are likely to be identified
with the proposed methodology, which thus improves overall system's
reliability
Sleep deprivation affects inflammatory marker expression in adipose tissue
<p>Abstract</p> <p/> <p>Sleep deprivation has been shown to increase inflammatory markers in rat sera and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Inflammation is a condition associated with pathologies such as obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. We investigated changes in the pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines and adipokines in different depots of white adipose tissue in rats. We also assessed lipid profiles and serum levels of corticosterone, leptin, and adiponectin after 96 hours of sleep deprivation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study consisted of two groups: a control (C) group and a paradoxical sleep deprivation by 96 h (PSD) group. Ten rats were randomly assigned to either the control group (C) or the PSD. Mesenteric (MEAT) and retroperitoneal (RPAT) adipose tissue, liver and serum were collected following completion of the PSD protocol. Levels of interleukin (IL)-6, interleukin (IL)-10 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α were analysed in MEAT and RPAT, and leptin, adiponectin, glucose, corticosterone and lipid profile levels were analysed in serum.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>IL-6 levels were elevated in RPAT but remained unchanged in MEAT after PSD. IL-10 protein concentration was not altered in either depot, and TNF-α levels decreased in MEAT. Glucose, triglycerides (TG), VLDL and leptin decreased in serum after 96 hours of PSD; adiponectin was not altered and corticosterone was increased.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>PSD decreased fat mass and may modulate the cytokine content in different depots of adipose tissue. The inflammatory response was diminished in both depots of adipose tissue, with increased IL-6 levels in RPAT and decreased TNF-α protein concentrations in MEAT and increased levels of corticosterone in serum.</p
UVUDF: Ultraviolet Imaging of the Hubble Ultradeep Field with Wide-field Camera 3
We present an overview of a 90-orbit Hubble Space Telescope treasury program
to obtain near ultraviolet imaging of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field using the
Wide Field Camera 3 UVIS detector with the F225W, F275W, and F336W filters.
This survey is designed to: (i) Investigate the episode of peak star formation
activity in galaxies at 1<z<2.5; (ii) Probe the evolution of massive galaxies
by resolving sub-galactic units (clumps); (iii) Examine the escape fraction of
ionizing radiation from galaxies at z~2-3; (iv) Greatly improve the reliability
of photometric redshift estimates; and (v) Measure the star formation rate
efficiency of neutral atomic-dominated hydrogen gas at z~1-3. In this overview
paper, we describe the survey details and data reduction challenges, including
both the necessity of specialized calibrations and the effects of charge
transfer inefficiency. We provide a stark demonstration of the effects of
charge transfer inefficiency on resultant data products, which when
uncorrected, result in uncertain photometry, elongation of morphology in the
readout direction, and loss of faint sources far from the readout. We agree
with the STScI recommendation that future UVIS observations that require very
sensitive measurements use the instrument's capability to add background light
through a "post-flash". Preliminary results on number counts of UV-selected
galaxies and morphology of galaxies at z~1 are presented. We find that the
number density of UV dropouts at redshifts 1.7, 2.1, and 2.7 is largely
consistent with the number predicted by published luminosity functions. We also
confirm that the image mosaics have sufficient sensitivity and resolution to
support the analysis of the evolution of star-forming clumps, reaching 28-29th
magnitude depth at 5 sigma in a 0.2 arcsecond radius aperture depending on
filter and observing epoch.Comment: Accepted A
Differential Regularization of Topologically Massive Yang-Mills Theory and Chern-Simons Theory
We apply differential renormalization method to the study of
three-dimensional topologically massive Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons theories.
The method is especially suitable for such theories as it avoids the need for
dimensional continuation of three-dimensional antisymmetric tensor and the
Feynman rules for three-dimensional theories in coordinate space are relatively
simple. The calculus involved is still lengthy but not as difficult as other
existing methods of calculation. We compute one-loop propagators and vertices
and derive the one-loop local effective action for topologically massive
Yang-Mills theory. We then consider Chern-Simons field theory as the large mass
limit of topologically massive Yang-Mills theory and show that this leads to
the famous shift in the parameter . Some useful formulas for the calculus of
differential renormalization of three-dimensional field theories are given in

A Cautionary Tale: MARVELS Brown Dwarf Candidate Reveals Itself To Be A Very Long Period, Highly Eccentric Spectroscopic Stellar Binary
We report the discovery of a highly eccentric, double-lined spectroscopic
binary star system (TYC 3010-1494-1), comprising two solar-type stars that we
had initially identified as a single star with a brown dwarf companion. At the
moderate resolving power of the MARVELS spectrograph and the spectrographs used
for subsequent radial-velocity (RV) measurements (R ~ <30,000), this particular
stellar binary mimics a single-lined binary with an RV signal that would be
induced by a brown dwarf companion (Msin(i)~50 M_Jup) to a solar-type primary.
At least three properties of this system allow it to masquerade as a single
star with a very low-mass companion: its large eccentricity (e~0.8), its
relatively long period (P~238 days), and the approximately perpendicular
orientation of the semi-major axis with respect to the line of sight (omega~189
degrees). As a result of these properties, for ~95% of the orbit the two sets
of stellar spectral lines are completely blended, and the RV measurements based
on centroiding on the apparently single-lined spectrum is very well fit by an
orbit solution indicative of a brown dwarf companion on a more circular orbit
(e~0.3). Only during the ~5% of the orbit near periastron passage does the
true, double-lined nature and large RV amplitude of ~15 km/s reveal itself. The
discovery of this binary system is an important lesson for RV surveys searching
for substellar companions; at a given resolution and observing cadence, a
survey will be susceptible to these kinds of astrophysical false positives for
a range of orbital parameters. Finally, for surveys like MARVELS that lack the
resolution for a useful line bisector analysis, it is imperative to monitor the
peak of the cross-correlation function for suspicious changes in width or
shape, so that such false positives can be flagged during the candidate vetting

Telomere Length Shows No Association with BRCA1 and BRCA2 Mutation Status
This study aimed to determine whether telomere length (TL) is a marker of cancer risk or genetic status amongst two cohorts of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers and controls. The first group was a prospective set of 665 male BRCA1/2 mutation carriers and controls (mean age 53 years), all healthy at time of enrolment and blood donation, 21 of whom have developed prostate cancer whilst on study. The second group consisted of 283 female BRCA1/2 mutation carriers and controls (mean age 48 years), half of whom had been diagnosed with breast cancer prior to enrolment. TL was quantified by qPCR from DNA extracted from peripheral blood lymphocytes. Weighted and unweighted Cox regressions and linear regression analyses were used to assess whether TL was associated with BRCA1/2 mutation status or cancer risk. We found no evidence for association between developing cancer or being a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carrier and telomere length. It is the first study investigating TL in a cohort of genetically predisposed males and although TL and BRCA status was previously studied in females our results don't support the previous finding of association between hereditary breast cancer and shorter TL
Highlights from the Pierre Auger Observatory
The Pierre Auger Observatory is the world's largest cosmic ray observatory.
Our current exposure reaches nearly 40,000 km str and provides us with an
unprecedented quality data set. The performance and stability of the detectors
and their enhancements are described. Data analyses have led to a number of
major breakthroughs. Among these we discuss the energy spectrum and the
searches for large-scale anisotropies. We present analyses of our X
data and show how it can be interpreted in terms of mass composition. We also
describe some new analyses that extract mass sensitive parameters from the 100%
duty cycle SD data. A coherent interpretation of all these recent results opens
new directions. The consequences regarding the cosmic ray composition and the
