Development of new vocational training modules on sustainable buildings maintenance and refurbishment
This article presents the methodology and main results obtained in Spain within the FORMAR project, a European-funded project under the Leonardo Da Vinci scheme (Lifelong Learning Programme), whose main goal is to jointly develop training resources and modules to improve the skills on sustainability issues of buildings maintenance and refurbishment workers, in three different European countries: Spain, Portugal (Project Coordinator) and France. The Units of Short-term Training (UST) developed within this project are
focused on the VET of carpenters, painters, bricklayers, building technicians and installers of solar panels, and a transversal unit containing basic concepts on sustainable construction and nearly Zero Energy Buildings (n-ZEB) is also developed. In parallel, clients’ guides for the aforementioned professionals are also implemented to improve the information provided to clients and owners in order to support the procurement decisions regarding building products and materials. Therefore, the project provides an opportunity to exchange experiences between organizations of these three European countries, as the UST will be developed simultaneously in each of them, exploring opportunities for training, guidance and exchange of experience. Even though the UST will have a common structure and contents, they will be slightly different in each country to adapt them to the different specific training needs and regulations of Spain, Portugal and France. This paper details, as a case study, the development process of the UST for carpenters and building technicians in Spain, including the analysis of needs and existing training materials, the main contents developed and the evaluation and testing process of the UST, which involves the active participation of several stakeholders of this sector as well as a classroom testing to obtain the students’ feedback
H.E.S.S. observations of PSR B1259-63 during its 2014 periastron passage
An extended observation campaign of the gamma-ray binary system PSR
B125963 has been conducted with the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic
System) II 5-telescope array during the system's periastron passage in 2014. We
report on the outcome of this campaign, which consists of more than 85 h of
data covering both pre- and post-periastron orbital phases. The lower energy
threshold of the H.E.S.S. II array allows very-high-energy (VHE; GeV) gamma-ray emission from PSR B125963 to be studied for the first
time down to 200 GeV. The new dataset partly overlaps with and extends in phase
previous H.E.S.S. campaigns on this source in 2004, 2007 and 2011, allowing for
a detailed long-term characterisation of the flux level at VHEs. In addition,
the 2014 campaign reported here includes VHE observations during the exact
periastron time, , as well as data taken simultaneously to the
gamma-ray flare detected with the Fermi-LAT. Our results will be discussed in a
multiwavelength context, thanks to the dense broad-band monitoring campaign

Inhibition of serum cholesterol oxidation by dietary vitamin C and selenium intake in high fat fed rats
Cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) have been considered as specific in vivo markers of oxidative stress. In this study, an increased oxidative status was induced in Wistar rats by feeding them a high-fat diet (cafeteria diet). Another group of animals received the same diet supplemented with a combination of two different antioxidants, ascorbic acid (100 mg/kg rat/day) and sodium selenite (200 microg/kg rat/day) and a third group fed on a control diet. Total and individual COPs analysis of the different diets showed no differences among them. At the end of the experimental trial, rats were sacrificed and serum cholesterol, triglycerides and COPs were measured. None of the diets induced changes in rats body weight, total cholesterol and triglycerides levels. Serum total COPs in rats fed on the high-fat diet were 1.01 microg/ml, two times the amount of the control rats (0.47 microg/ml). When dietary antioxidant supplementation was given, serum total COPs concentration (0.44 microg/ml) showed the same levels than those of the rats on control diet. 7beta-hydroxycholesterol, formed non-enzymatically via cholesterol peroxidation in the presence of reactive oxygen species, showed slightly lower values in the antioxidant-supplemented animals compared to the control ones. This study confirms the importance of dietary antioxidants as protective factors against the formation of oxysterols
SOFIAS – Herramienta para el análisis de ciclo de vida y la calificación ambiental de edificios
This paper describes the development process of a new software tool, called SOFIAS (Software for a Sustainable Architecture), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitivenes. Following CEN/TC 350 standard on environmental assessment of buildings, the tool aims at assisting building professionals on reducing the life-cycle environmental impact through the design of new buildings and the refurbishment of existing ones. In addition, SOFIAS provides a rating system based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. El síndrome facetar lumbar: Tratamiento mediante infiltraciones facetarias con fenol
Se presenta una serie de 125 pacientes afectos de cuadro de lumbociatalgia atípica, diagnosticados de síndrome facetario y tratados con infiltraciones de solución fenolada en las articulaciones interapofisarias posteriores afectadas, seguidas de un programa de rehabilitación protocolizado tras las infiltraciones. A propósito de los mismos y tras una análisis estadístico de los datos obtenidos del estudio, se establecen algunos criterios para el tratamiento de pacientes aquejados de este tipo de patología.The authors present a series of 125 patients afflicted with an atypical sciatic low-back pain, who were diagnosed of "facet joint syndrome" and treated with injections of phenol solution in the affected lumbar zygapophysial joints. The patients followed a protocolized rehabilitation program. After an statistical analysis of the data obtained from the study, some criteria are stabilized for the treatment of patients suffering this pathology
Global sensitivity analysis of stochastic computer models with joint metamodels
The global sensitivity analysis method used to quantify the influence of uncertain input variables on the variability in numerical model responses has already been applied to deterministic computer codes; deterministic means here that the same set of input variables gives always the same output value. This paper proposes a global sensitivity analysis methodology for stochastic computer codes, for which the result of each code run is itself random. The framework of the joint modeling of the mean and dispersion of heteroscedastic data is used. To deal with the complexity of computer experiment outputs, nonparametric joint models are discussed and a new Gaussian process-based joint model is proposed. The relevance of these models is analyzed based upon two case studies. Results show that the joint modeling approach yields accurate sensitivity index estimatiors even when heteroscedasticity is strong
Cutaneous Biology: In vivo blockade of pemphigus vulgaris acantholysis by inhibition of intracellular signal transduction cascades
Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune disease characterized by
mucocutaneous intraepithelial blisters and pathogenic autoantibodies against
desmoglein 3. The mechanism of blister formation in pemphigus has not been
defined; however, in vitro data suggest a role for activation of intracellular
signalling cascades. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the contribution of these
signalling pathways to the mechanism of PV IgG-induced acantholysis in vivo.
METHODS: We used the passive transfer mouse model. Mice were injected with IgG
fractions of sera from a patient with PV, with or without pretreatment with
inhibitors of proteins that mediate intracellular signalling cascades. RESULTS:
Inhibitors of tyrosine kinases, phospholipase C, calmodulin and the
serine/threonine kinase protein kinase C prevented PV IgG-induced acantholysis in
vivo. CONCLUSIONS: These observations strongly support the role of intracellular
signalling cascades in the molecular mechanism of PV IgG-induced acantholysi
Structural characterization and energy performance of novel hybrid PVT solar-panels through 3-D FEM and CFD simulations
Hybrid Photovoltaic-Thermal (PVT) panels generate both power and heat from the same area with overall efficiencies up to 70%. This work assesses the performance of novel hybrid PVT solar panels considering alternative geometries and materials that maximize heat transfer while allowing weight and cost reductions. A three-dimensional (3-D) model previously developed and validated using 3-D Finite-Element and Computational Fluid-Dynamics (FEM and CFD) software is used for this purpose. The most promising configurations and materials for the absorber-exchanger unit of the proposed PVT panel are studied to analyse their energy performance and behaviour in terms of a thermal-stress assessment. Apart from an assessment of the steady-state performance, for the type of solar PVT panels considered, especially those made of polymeric materials, it is important to evaluate the thermal expansion that the collector suffers, so as to verify whether the associated thermal stresses and strains are within the limits that guarantee a proper performance during its lifetime. The most promising PVT panel is then integrated within a Solar Combined Heat and Power (S-CHP) system for power and heating provision to a single-family house located in Zaragoza (Spain), in order to assess its daily energy performance through transient simulations on half-hourly basis. The results show that these novel polymeric PVT panel configurations are a promising alternative to commercial PVT panel designs, achieving an improved thermal performance compared to a reference case (4% higher optical efficiency and 15% lower heat loss coefficient), while suffering lower strains in most of the PVT layers. Furthermore, the novel polycarbonate 3×2 mm flat-box configuration has the potential to cover, on average, around 50% of the total space heating and Domestic Hot Water (DHW) demand and around 87% of the total electricity demand (including lighting, cooling and home appliances)
MAGIC Upper Limits for two Milagro-detected, Bright Fermi Sources in the Region of SNR G65.1+0.6
We report on the observation of the region around supernova remnant G65.1+0.6
with the stand-alone MAGIC-I telescope. This region hosts the two bright GeV
gamma-ray sources 1FGL J1954.3+2836 and 1FGL J1958.6+2845. They are identified
as GeV pulsars and both have a possible counterpart detected at about 35 TeV by
the Milagro observatory. MAGIC collected 25.5 hours of good quality data, and
found no significant emission in the range around 1 TeV. We therefore report
differential flux upper limits, assuming the emission to be point-like (<0.1
deg) or within a radius of 0.3 deg. In the point-like scenario, the flux limits
around 1 TeV are at the level of 3 % and 2 % of the Crab Nebula flux, for the
two sources respectively. This implies that the Milagro emission is either
extended over a much larger area than our point spread function, or it must be
peaked at energies beyond 1 TeV, resulting in a photon index harder than 2.2 in
