Determination of the superconducting gap in near optimally doped Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+\delta} (x ~ 0.4) from low-temperature specific heat
Low-temperature specific heat of the monolayer high-Tc superconductor
Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+\delta} has been measured close to the optimal doping
point (x ~ 0.4) in different magnetic fields. The identification of both a T^2
term in zero field and a \sqrt{H} dependence of the specific heat in fields is
shown to follow the theoretical prediction for d-wave pairing, which enables us
to extract the slope of the superconducting gap in the vicinity of the nodes
(v_{\Delta}, which is proportional to the superconducting gap \Delta_0 at the
antinodes according to the standard d_{x^2-y^2} gap function). The v_{\Delta}
or \Delta_0 (~ 12 meV) determined from this bulk measurement shows close
agreement with that obtained from spectroscopy or tunneling measurements, which
confirms the simple d-wave form of the superconducting gap.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
A Three-Flavor AdS/QCD Model with a Back-Reacted Geometry

Pseudogap, Superconducting Energy Scale, and Fermi Arcs in Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors
Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in
in zero temperature limit, we determined the nodal slope
of the quasiparticle gap. It is found that has a very
similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature or value
. Meanwhile the virtual maximum gap at () derived from
is found to follow the simple relation upon
changing the doping concentration. This strongly suggests a close relationship
between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is further found that the
superconducting transition temperature is determined by both the residual
density of states of the pseudogap phase and the nodal gap slope in the zero
temperature limit, namely, , where
is the extracted zero temperature value of the normal state
specific heat coefficient which is proportional to the size of the residual
Fermi arc . This manifests that the superconductivity may be formed by
forming a new gap on the Fermi arcs near nodes below . These observations
mimic the key predictions of the SU(2) slave boson theory based on the general

AdS/QCD Phenomenological Models from a Back-Reacted Geometry
We construct a fully back-reacted holographic dual of a four-dimensional
field theory which exhibits chiral symmetry breaking. Two possible models are
considered by studying the effects of a five-dimensional field, dual to the
operator. One model has smooth geometry at all radii and the other
dynamically generates a cutoff at finite radius. Both of these models satisfy
Einstein's field equations. The second model has only three free parameters, as
in QCD, and we show that this gives phenomenologically consistent results. We
also discuss the possibility that in order to obtain linear confinement from a
back-reacted model it may be necessary to consider the condensate of a

Genome sequence of an Australian kangaroo, Macropus eugenii, provides insight into the evolution of mammalian reproduction and development.
BACKGROUND: We present the genome sequence of the tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii, which is a member of the kangaroo family and the first representative of the iconic hopping mammals that symbolize Australia to be sequenced. The tammar has many unusual biological characteristics, including the longest period of embryonic diapause of any mammal, extremely synchronized seasonal breeding and prolonged and sophisticated lactation within a well-defined pouch. Like other marsupials, it gives birth to highly altricial young, and has a small number of very large chromosomes, making it a valuable model for genomics, reproduction and development. RESULTS: The genome has been sequenced to 2 Ă coverage using Sanger sequencing, enhanced with additional next generation sequencing and the integration of extensive physical and linkage maps to build the genome assembly. We also sequenced the tammar transcriptome across many tissues and developmental time points. Our analyses of these data shed light on mammalian reproduction, development and genome evolution: there is innovation in reproductive and lactational genes, rapid evolution of germ cell genes, and incomplete, locus-specific X inactivation. We also observe novel retrotransposons and a highly rearranged major histocompatibility complex, with many class I genes located outside the complex. Novel microRNAs in the tammar HOX clusters uncover new potential mammalian HOX regulatory elements. CONCLUSIONS: Analyses of these resources enhance our understanding of marsupial gene evolution, identify marsupial-specific conserved non-coding elements and critical genes across a range of biological systems, including reproduction, development and immunity, and provide new insight into marsupial and mammalian biology and genome evolution

A survey of failed post-retained restorations
Survival of endodontically treated, post-restored teeth depends on a multitude of factors, all of which are practically impossible to include in a randomized, controlled clinical study. The purpose of this survey was to characterize and analyze reported failures of post-retained restorations to identify factors critical to failure and to type of failure. A questionnaire was mailed to private practitioners in Denmark with a request to complete the questionnaire whenever a patient presented with a failed post-retained restoration. Information was gathered on factors related to the patient, the tooth, the restorative materials, and the techniques. Two-hundred and sixty questionnaires were collected from 171 practitioners over a 3-year period. Functioning time until failure varied between 3Â months and 38Â years. Mean survival time until failure was 11Â years. Of the failed restorations, 61% had functioned for 10Â years or less. Fracture of the tooth was the most common type of failure reported, followed by loosening of the post and fracture of the post. Tapered posts implied an increased risk of tooth fracture compared to loosening or fracture of the post, and the relative risk of tooth fracture increased with the functioning time until failure. Fracture of the post was more common among male than female patients. On the basis of this survey of failed post-retained restorations, it was concluded that tapered posts were associated with a higher risk of tooth fracture than were parallel-sided posts
The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment
The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in
operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from
this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release
Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first
two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14
is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all
data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14
is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation
Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the
Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2),
including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine
learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes
from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous
release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of
the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the
important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both
targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS
website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to
data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is
planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be

We search for radiative decays into a weakly interacting neutral
particle, namely an invisible particle, using the produced through the
process in a data sample of
decays collected by the BESIII detector
at BEPCII. No significant signal is observed. Using a modified frequentist
method, upper limits on the branching fractions are set under different
assumptions of invisible particle masses up to 1.2 . The upper limit corresponding to an invisible particle with zero mass
is 7.0 at the 90\% confidence level
Fine Mapping of the Psoriasis Susceptibility Locus PSORS1 Supports HLA-C as the Susceptibility Gene in the Han Chinese Population
PSORS1 (psoriasis susceptibility gene 1) is a major susceptibility locus for psoriasis. Several fine-mapping studies have highlighted a 300-kb candidate region of PSORS1 where multiple biologically plausible candidate genes were suggested. The most recent study has indicated HLA-Cw6 as the primary PSORS1 risk allele within the candidate region in a Caucasian population. In this study, a family-based association analysis of the PSORS1 locus was performed by analyzing 10 polymorphic microsatellite markers from the PSORS1 region as well as HLA-B, HLA-C and CDSN loci in 163 Chinese families of psoriasis. Five marker loci show strong evidence (P<10â3), and one marker locus shows weak evidence (Pâ=â0.04) for association. The haplotype cluster analysis showed that all the risk haplotypes are Cw6 positive and share a 369-kb region of homologous marker alleles which carries all the risk alleles, including HLA-Cw6 and CDSN*TTC, identified in this study. The recombinant haplotype analysis of the HLA-Cw6 and CDSN*TTC alleles in 228 Chinese families showed that the HLA-Cw6â/CDSN*TTC+ recombinant haplotype is clearly not associated with risk for psoriasis (Tâ¶NTâ=â29:57, pâ=â0.0025) in a Chinese population, suggesting that the CDSN*TTC allele itself does not confer risk without the presence of the HLA-Cw6 allele. The further exclusion analysis of the non-risk HLA-Cw6â/CDSN*TTC+ recombinant haplotypes with common recombination breakpoints has allowed us to refine the location of PSORS1 to a small candidate region. Finally, we performed a conditional linkage analysis and showed that the HLA-Cw6 is a major risk allele but does not explain the full linkage evidence of the PSORS1 locus in a Chinese population. By performing a series of family-based association analyses of haplotypes as well as an exclusion analysis of recombinant haplotypes, we were able to refine the PSORS1 gene to a small critical region where HLA-C is a strong candidate to be the PSORS1 susceptibility gene
