    Evidence for two-quark content of f0(980)f_{0}(980) in exclusive bcb\to c decays

    Inspired by a large decay branching ratio (BR) of B+f0(980)K+B^{+}\to f_{0}(980)K^{+} measured by Belle recently, we propose that a significant evidence of the component of nnˉ=(uuˉ+ddˉ)/2n\bar{n}=(u\bar{u}+d\bar{d})/\sqrt{2} in f0(980)f_{0}(980) could be demonstrated in exclusive bcb\to c decays by the observation of f0(980)f_{0}(980) in the final states BˉD0()π+π(KK)\bar{B}\to D^{0(*)} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}(KK) and BˉJ/Ψπ+π(KK)\bar{B}\to J/\Psi \pi^{+} \pi^{-}(KK). We predict the BRs of BˉD0()(J/Ψ)f0(980)\bar{B}\to D^{0(*)} (J/\Psi) f_{0}(980) to be O(104){\cal {O}}(10^{-4}) (O(105){\cal {O}}(10^{-5})) while the unknown wave functions of D()0D^{(*)0} (J/ΨJ/\Psi) are chosen to fit the observed decays of BˉD()0π0(J/ΨK0())\bar{B}\to D^{(*)0} \pi^{0} (J/\Psi K^{0(*)}).Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Revtex4, version to appear in PR

    Gamma-ray Observations Under Bright Moonlight with VERITAS

    Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) are equipped with sensitive photomultiplier tube (PMT) cameras. Exposure to high levels of background illumination degrades the efficiency of and potentially destroys these photo-detectors over time, so IACTs cannot be operated in the same configuration in the presence of bright moonlight as under dark skies. Since September 2012, observations have been carried out with the VERITAS IACTs under bright moonlight (defined as about three times the night-sky-background (NSB) of a dark extragalactic field, typically occurring when Moon illumination > 35%) in two observing modes, firstly by reducing the voltage applied to the PMTs and, secondly, with the addition of ultra-violet (UV) bandpass filters to the cameras. This has allowed observations at up to about 30 times previous NSB levels (around 80% Moon illumination), resulting in 30% more observing time between the two modes over the course of a year. These additional observations have already allowed for the detection of a flare from the 1ES 1727+502 and for an observing program targeting a measurement of the cosmic-ray positron fraction. We provide details of these new observing modes and their performance relative to the standard VERITAS observations

    Bf0(980)K()B\to f_{0}(980) K^{(*)} decays and final state interactions

    We study the exclusive decays of Bf0(980)K()B\to f_{0}(980) K^{(*)} in the framework of the perturbative QCD by identifying the f0(980)f_{0}(980) as the composition of sˉs\bar{s} s and nˉn=(uˉu+dˉd)/2\bar{n}n=(\bar{u}u+\bar{d}d)/\sqrt{2}. We find that the influence of the nˉn\bar{n} n content on the predicted branching ratios is crucial. We discuss the possible rescattering and gluonium states which could enhance the branching ratios of considered decays. We point out that the CP asymmetry in Bf0(980)KS,LB\to f_{0}(980) K_{S,L} could be a new explorer of sin2ϕ1\sin2\phi_{1}.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, Revtex4, final version to appear in Phys. Rev.

    NN Core Interactions and Differential Cross Sections from One Gluon Exchange

    We derive nonstrange baryon-baryon scattering amplitudes in the nonrelativistic quark model using the ``quark Born diagram" formalism. This approach describes the scattering as a single interaction, here the one-gluon-exchange (OGE) spin-spin term followed by constituent interchange, with external nonrelativistic baryon wavefunctions attached to the scattering diagrams to incorporate higher-twist wavefunction effects. The short-range repulsive core in the NN interaction has previously been attributed to this spin-spin interaction in the literature; we find that these perturbative constituent-interchange diagrams do indeed predict repulsive interactions in all I,S channels of the nucleon-nucleon system, and we compare our results for the equivalent short-range potentials to the core potentials found by other authors using nonperturbative methods. We also apply our perturbative techniques to the NΔ\Delta and ΔΔ\Delta\Delta systems: Some ΔΔ\Delta\Delta channels are found to have attractive core potentials and may accommodate ``molecular" bound states near threshold. Finally we use our Born formalism to calculate the NN differential cross section, which we compare with experimental results for unpolarised proton-proton elastic scattering.     Effects of coastal urbanization on salt-marsh faunal assemblages in the northern Gulf of Mexico

We used a landscape ecology approach to quantify the composition and configuration of salt-marsh habitats and developed surfaces at multiple spatial scales surrounding three small, first-order salt-marsh tidal creeks arrayed along a gradient of urbanization in two river-dominated estuaries. From May 3 to June 4, 2010, nekton and macroinfauna were collected weekly at all six sites. Due to the greater abundance of grass shrimp Palaemonetes spp., brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus, blue crab Callinectes sapidus, Gulf Menhaden Brevoortia patronus, and Spot Leiostomus xanthurus, tidal creeks in intact natural (IN) salt-marsh landscapes supported a nekton assemblage that was significantly different from those in partially urbanized (PU) or completely urbanized (CU) salt-marsh landscapes. However, PU landscapes still supported an abundant nekton assemblage. In addition, the results illustrated a linkage between life history traits and landscape characteristics. Resident and transient nekton species that have specific habitat requirements are more likely to be impacted in urbanized landscapes than more mobile species that are able to exploit multiple habitats. Patterns were less clear for macroinfaunal assemblages, although they were comparatively less abundant in CU salt-marsh landscapes than in either IN or PU landscapes. The low abundance or absence of several macroinfaunal taxa in CU landscapes may be viewed as an additional indicator of poor habitat quality for nekton. The observed patterns also suggested that benthic sediments in the CU salt-marsh landscapes were altered in comparison with IN or PU landscapes. The amount of developed shoreline and various metrics related to salt marsh fragmentation were important drivers of observed patterns in nekton and macroinfaunal assemblages

    Is X(3872) {\sl Really} a Molecular State?

    After taking into account both the pion and sigma meson exchange potential, we have performed a dynamical calculation of the D0Dˉ0D^0\bar{D}^{\ast0} system. The σ\sigma meson exchange potential is repulsive from heavy quark symmetry and numerically important for a loosely bound system. Our analysis disfavors the interpretation of X(3872) as a loosely bound molecular state if we use the experimental DDπD^\ast D\pi coupling constant g=0.59g=0.59 and a reasonable cutoff around 1 GeV, which is the typical hadronic scale. Bound state solutions with negative eigenvalues for the DDˉD\bar{D}^\ast system exist only with either a very large coupling constant (two times of the experimental value) or a large cutoff (Λ6\Lambda \sim 6 GeV or β6\beta \sim 6 GeV2^2). In contrast, there probably exists a loosely bound S-wave BBˉB\bar{B}^\ast molecular state. Once produced, such a molecular state would be rather stable since its dominant decay mode is the radiative decay through BBγB^\ast\to B \gamma.     A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007

    We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy, particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of merger and core-collapse events.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, science summary page at http://www.ligo.org/science/Publication-S5LV_ANTARES/index.php.     Genetically Determined Height and Risk of Non-hodgkin Lymphoma

    Although the evidence is not consistent, epidemiologic studies have suggested that taller adult height may be associated with an increased risk of some non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) subtypes. Height is largely determined by genetic factors, but how these genetic factors may contribute to NHL risk is unknown. We investigated the relationship between genetic determinants of height and NHL risk using data from eight genome-wide association studies (GWAS) comprising 10,629 NHL cases, including 3,857 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), 2,847 follicular lymphoma (FL), 3,100 chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and 825 marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) cases, and 9,505 controls of European ancestry. We evaluated genetically predicted height by constructing polygenic risk scores using 833 height-associated SNPs. We used logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for association between genetically determined height and the risk of four NHL subtypes in each GWAS and then used fixed-effect meta-analysis to combine subtype results across studies. We found suggestive evidence between taller genetically determined height and increased CLL risk (OR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.00\u20131.17, p = 0.049), which was slightly stronger among women (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.01\u20131.31, p = 0.036). No significant associations were observed with DLBCL, FL, or MZL. Our findings suggest that there may be some shared genetic factors between CLL and height, but other endogenous or environmental factors may underlie reported epidemiologic height associations with other subtypes
