Deconstructing Gaugino Mediation
We present a model of supersymmetry breaking which produces gaugino masses
and negligible scalar masses at a high scale. The model is inspired by
``deconstructing'' or ``latticizing'' models in extra dimensions where
supersymmetry breaking and visible matter are spatially separated. We find a
simple four-dimensional model which only requires two lattice sites (or gauge
groups) to reproduce the phenomenology.Comment: LaTeX, 9 pages, acknowledgements adde

CoGeNT Interpretations
Recently, the CoGeNT experiment has reported events in excess of expected
background. We analyze dark matter scenarios which can potentially explain this
signal. Under the standard case of spin independent scattering with equal
couplings to protons and neutrons, we find significant tensions with existing
constraints. Consistency with these limits is possible if a large fraction of
the putative signal events is coming from an additional source of experimental
background. In this case, dark matter recoils cannot be said to explain the
excess, but are consistent with it. We also investigate modifications to dark
matter scattering that can evade the null experiments. In particular, we
explore generalized spin independent couplings to protons and neutrons, spin
dependent couplings, momentum dependent scattering, and inelastic interactions.
We find that some of these generalizations can explain most of the CoGeNT
events without violation of other constraints. Generalized couplings with some
momentum dependence, allows further consistency with the DAMA modulation
signal, realizing a scenario where both CoGeNT and DAMA signals are coming from
dark matter. A model with dark matter interacting and annihilating into a new
light boson can realize most of the scenarios considered.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figs, v2: published version, some discussions clarifie
Exponentially Small Supersymmetry Breaking from Extra Dimensions
The supersymmetric ``shining'' of free massive chiral superfields in extra
dimensions from a distant source brane can trigger exponentially small
supersymmetry breaking on our brane of order e^{-2 pi R}, where R is the radius
of the extra dimensions. This supersymmetry breaking can be transmitted to the
superpartners in a number of ways, for instance by gravity or via the standard
model gauge interactions. The radius R can easily be stabilized at a size O(10)
larger that the fundamental scale. The models are extremely simple, relying
only on free, classical bulk dynamics to solve the hierarchy problem.Comment: RevTex, 1 figure. Comment on mu problem adde
Dynamically Warped Theory Space and Collective Supersymmetry Breaking
We study deconstructed gauge theories in which a warp factor emerges
dynamically and naturally. We present nonsupersymmetric models in which the
potential for the link fields has translational invariance, broken only by
boundary effects that trigger an exponential profile of vacuum expectation
values. The spectrum of physical states deviates exponentially from that of the
continuum for large masses; we discuss the effects of such exponential towers
on gauge coupling unification. We also present a supersymmetric example in
which a warp factor is driven by Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. The model is peculiar
in that it possesses a global supersymmetry that remains unbroken despite
nonvanishing D-terms. Inclusion of gravity and/or additional messenger fields
leads to the collective breaking of supersymmetry and to unusual phenomenology.Comment: 28 pages LaTeX, JHEP format, 7 eps figures (v2: reference added
Naturalness and Higgs Decays in the MSSM with a Singlet
The simplest extension of the supersymmetric standard model - the addition of
one singlet superfield - can have a profound impact on the Higgs and its
decays. We perform a general operator analysis of this scenario, focusing on
the phenomenologically distinct scenarios that can arise, and not restricting
the scope to the narrow framework of the NMSSM. We reexamine decays to four b
quarks and four tau's, finding that they are still generally viable, but at the
edge of LEP limits. We find a broad set of Higgs decay modes, some new,
including those with four gluon final states, as well as more general six and
eight parton final states. We find the phenomenology of these scenarios is
dramatically impacted by operators typically ignored, specifically those
arising from D-terms in the hidden sector, and those arising from weak-scale
colored fields. In addition to sensitivity of m_Z, there are potential tunings
of other aspects of the spectrum. In spite of this, these models can be very
natural, with light stops and a Higgs as light as 82 GeV. These scenarios
motivate further analyses of LEP data as well as studies of the detection
capabilities of future colliders to the new decay channels presented.Comment: 3 figures, 1 appendix; version to appear in JHEP; typos fixed and

Representations of Conformal Nets, Universal C*-Algebras and K-Theory
We study the representation theory of a conformal net A on the circle from a
K-theoretical point of view using its universal C*-algebra C*(A). We prove that
if A satisfies the split property then, for every representation \pi of A with
finite statistical dimension, \pi(C*(A)) is weakly closed and hence a finite
direct sum of type I_\infty factors. We define the more manageable locally
normal universal C*-algebra C*_ln(A) as the quotient of C*(A) by its largest
ideal vanishing in all locally normal representations and we investigate its
structure. In particular, if A is completely rational with n sectors, then
C*_ln(A) is a direct sum of n type I_\infty factors. Its ideal K_A of compact
operators has nontrivial K-theory, and we prove that the DHR endomorphisms of
C*(A) with finite statistical dimension act on K_A, giving rise to an action of
the fusion semiring of DHR sectors on K_0(K_A)$. Moreover, we show that this
action corresponds to the regular representation of the associated fusion
algebra.Comment: v2: we added some comments in the introduction and new references.

Genuine Correlations of Like-Sign Particles in Hadronic Z0 Decays
Correlations among hadrons with the same electric charge produced in Z0
decays are studied using the high statistics data collected from 1991 through
1995 with the OPAL detector at LEP. Normalized factorial cumulants up to fourth
order are used to measure genuine particle correlations as a function of the
size of phase space domains in rapidity, azimuthal angle and transverse
momentum. Both all-charge and like-sign particle combinations show strong
positive genuine correlations. One-dimensional cumulants initially increase
rapidly with decreasing size of the phase space cells but saturate quickly. In
contrast, cumulants in two- and three-dimensional domains continue to increase.
The strong rise of the cumulants for all-charge multiplets is increasingly
driven by that of like-sign multiplets. This points to the likely influence of
Bose-Einstein correlations. Some of the recently proposed algorithms to
simulate Bose-Einstein effects, implemented in the Monte Carlo model PYTHIA,
are found to reproduce reasonably well the measured second- and higher-order
correlations between particles with the same charge as well as those in
all-charge particle multiplets.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Dialysis initiation, modality choice, access, and prescription: conclusions from a Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Controversies Conference
Globally, the number of patients undergoing maintenance dialysis is increasing, yet throughout the world there is significant variability in the practice of initiating dialysis. Factors such as availability of resources, reasons for starting dialysis, timing of dialysis initiation, patient education and preparedness, dialysis modality and access, as well as varied “country-specific” factors significantly affect patient experiences and outcomes. As the burden of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) has increased globally, there has also been a growing recognition of the importance of patient involvement in determining the goals of care and decisions regarding treatment. In January 2018, KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes) convened a Controversies Conference focused on dialysis initiation, including modality choice, access, and prescription. Here we present a summary of the conference discussions, including identified knowledge gaps, areas of controversy, and priorities for research. A major novel theme represented during the conference was the need to move away from a “one-size-fits-all” approach to dialysis and provide more individualized care that incorporates patient goals and preferences while still maintaining best practices for quality and safety. Identifying and including patient-centered goals that can be validated as quality indicators in the context of diverse health care systems to achieve equity of outcomes will require alignment of goals and incentives between patients, providers, regulators, and payers that will vary across health care jurisdictions
