It was Camelot. Many Americans, prohibited, by law from the titles of nobility, had embraced their young president in that very manner. The world had., in many ways, come to regard, him in a fashion other than just another American President. The Jacqueline Kennedy that D. W. Brogan claimed, helped her husband, in the 1960 campaign only by being pregnant had. blossomed, into a great political asset. 1 She had. captivated, the Spanish and, French and had I persuaded Andre Malroux to allow the first lady of the O world, the Mona Lisa, to journey to the United, States. The Kennedy children, Caroline and, John-John made the patter of tiny footsteps, so long absent in the White House, fondly remembered. They also made good, copy for McCall\u27s and. other women\u27s magazines that could, now point to a first family with the accent on youth.

An exploratory cluster randomised trial of a university halls of residence based social norms marketing campaign to reduce alcohol consumption among 1st year students
<p>Aims: This exploratory trial examines the feasibility of implementing a social norms marketing campaign to reduce student drinking in universities in Wales, and evaluating it using cluster randomised trial methodology.</p>
<p>Methods: Fifty residence halls in 4 universities in Wales were randomly assigned to intervention or control arms. Web and paper surveys were distributed to students within these halls (nâ=â3800), assessing exposure/contamination, recall of and evaluative responses to intervention messages, perceived drinking norms and personal drinking behaviour. Measures included the Drinking Norms Rating Form, the Daily Drinking Questionnaire and AUDIT-C.</p>
<p>Results: A response rate of 15% (nâ=â554) was achieved, varying substantially between sites. Intervention posters were seen by 80% and 43% of students in intervention and control halls respectively, with most remaining materials seen by a minority in both groups. Intervention messages were rated as credible and relevant by little more than half of students, though fewer felt they would influence their behaviour, with lighter drinkers more likely to perceive messages as credible. No differences in perceived norms were observed between intervention and control groups. Students reporting having seen intervention materials reported lower descriptive and injunctive norms than those who did not.</p>
<p>Conclusions: Attention is needed to enhancing exposure, credibility and perceived relevance of intervention messages, particularly among heavier drinkers, before definitive evaluation can be recommended. A definitive evaluation would need to consider how it would achieve sufficient response rates, whilst hall-level cluster randomisation appears subject to a significant degree of contamination.</p>
Macular and serum carotenoid concentrations in patients with malabsorption syndromes
The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to protect the human macula by absorbing blue light and quenching free radicals. Intestinal malabsorption syndromes such as celiac and Crohnâs disease are known to cause deficiencies of lipid-soluble nutrients. We hypothesized that subjects with nutrient malabsorption syndromes will demonstrate lower carotenoid levels in the macula and blood, and that these lower levels may correlate with early-onset maculopathy. Resonance Raman spectrographic (RRS) measurements of macular carotenoid levels were collected from subjects with and without a history of malabsorption syndromes. Carotenoids were extracted from serum and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Subjects with malabsorption (nâ=â22) had 37% lower levels of macular carotenoids on average versus controls (nâ=â25, Pâ<â0.001). Malabsorption was not associated with decreased serum carotenoid levels. Convincing signs of early maculopathy were not observed. We conclude that intestinal malabsorption results in lower macular carotenoid levels
First detection of a VHE gamma-ray spectral maximum from a Cosmic source: H.E.S.S. discovery of the Vela X nebula
The Vela supernova remnant (SNR) is a complex region containing a number of
sources of non-thermal radiation. The inner section of this SNR, within 2
degrees of the pulsar PSR B0833-45, has been observed by the H.E.S.S. gamma-ray
atmospheric Cherenkov detector in 2004 and 2005. A strong signal is seen from
an extended region to the south of the pulsar, within an integration region of
radius 0.8 deg. around the position (RA = 08h 35m 00s, dec = -45 deg. 36'
J2000.0). The excess coincides with a region of hard X-ray emission seen by the
ROSAT and ASCA satellites. The observed energy spectrum of the source between
550 GeV and 65 TeV is well fit by a power law function with photon index = 1.45
+/- 0.09(stat) +/- 0.2(sys) and an exponential cutoff at an energy of 13.8 +/-
2.3(stat) +/- 4.1(sys) TeV. The integral flux above 1 TeV is (1.28 +/- 0.17
(stat) +/- 0.38(sys)) x 10^{-11} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. This result is the first clear
measurement of a peak in the spectral energy distribution from a VHE gamma-ray
source, likely related to inverse Compton emission. A fit of an Inverse Compton
model to the H.E.S.S. spectral energy distribution gives a total energy in
non-thermal electrons of ~2 x 10^{45} erg between 5 TeV and 100 TeV, assuming a
distance of 290 parsec to the pulsar. The best fit electron power law index is

H.E.S.S. observations of gamma-ray bursts in 2003-2007
Very-high-energy (VHE; >~100 GeV) gamma-rays are expected from gamma-ray
bursts (GRBs) in some scenarios. Exploring this photon energy regime is
necessary for understanding the energetics and properties of GRBs. GRBs have
been one of the prime targets for the H.E.S.S. experiment, which makes use of
four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) to detect VHE gamma-rays.
Dedicated observations of 32 GRB positions were made in the years 2003-2007 and
a search for VHE gamma-ray counterparts of these GRBs was made. Depending on
the visibility and observing conditions, the observations mostly start minutes
to hours after the burst and typically last two hours. Results from
observations of 22 GRB positions are presented and evidence of a VHE signal was
found neither in observations of any individual GRBs, nor from stacking data
from subsets of GRBs with higher expected VHE flux according to a
model-independent ranking scheme. Upper limits for the VHE gamma-ray flux from
the GRB positions were derived. For those GRBs with measured redshifts,
differential upper limits at the energy threshold after correcting for
absorption due to extra-galactic background light are also presented.Comment: 9 pages, 4 tables, 3 figure
PSR J1907+0602: A Radio-Faint Gamma-Ray Pulsar Powering a Bright TeV Pulsar Wind Nebula
We present multiwavelength studies of the 106.6 ms gamma-ray pulsar PSR
J1907+06 near the TeV source MGRO J1908+06. Timing observations with Fermi
result in a precise position determination for the pulsar of R.A. =
19h07m547(2), decl. = +06:02:16(2) placing the pulsar firmly within the TeV
source extent, suggesting the TeV source is the pulsar wind nebula of PSR
J1907+0602. Pulsed gamma-ray emission is clearly visible at energies from 100
MeV to above 10 GeV. The phase-averaged power-law index in the energy range E >
0.1 GeV is = 1.76 \pm 0.05 with an exponential cutoff energy E_{c} = 3.6 \pm
0.5 GeV. We present the energy-dependent gamma-ray pulsed light curve as well
as limits on off-pulse emission associated with the TeV source. We also report
the detection of very faint (flux density of ~3.4 microJy) radio pulsations
with the Arecibo telescope at 1.5 GHz having a dispersion measure DM = 82.1 \pm
1.1 cm^{-3}pc. This indicates a distance of 3.2 \pm 0.6 kpc and a
pseudo-luminosity of L_{1400} ~ 0.035 mJy kpc^2. A Chandra ACIS observation
revealed an absorbed, possibly extended, compact <(4 arcsec) X-ray source with
significant non-thermal emission at R.A. = 19h07m54.76, decl. = +06:02:14.6
with a flux of 2.3^{+0.6}_{-1.4} X 10^{-14} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}. From archival
ASCA observations, we place upper limits on any arcminute scale 2--10 keV X-ray
emission of ~ 1 X 10^{-13} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}. The implied distance to the
pulsar is compatible with that of the supernova remnant G40.5-0.5, located on
the far side of the TeV nebula from PSR J1907+0602, and the S74 molecular cloud
on the nearer side which we discuss as potential birth sites
Discovery of VHE gamma-rays from the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object RGB J0152+017
Aims: The BL Lac object RGB J0152+017 (z=0.080) was predicted to be a very
high-energy (VHE; > 100 GeV) gamma-ray source, due to its high X-ray and radio
fluxes. Our aim is to understand the radiative processes by investigating the
observed emission and its production mechanism using the High Energy
Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) experiment. Methods: We report recent
observations of the BL Lac source RGB J0152+017 made in late October and
November 2007 with the H.E.S.S. array consisting of four imaging atmospheric
Cherenkov telescopes. Contemporaneous observations were made in X-rays by the
Swift and RXTE satellites, in the optical band with the ATOM telescope, and in
the radio band with the Nancay Radio Telescope. Results: A signal of 173
gamma-ray photons corresponding to a statistical significance of 6.6 sigma was
found in the data. The energy spectrum of the source can be described by a
powerlaw with a spectral index of 2.95+/-0.36stat+/-0.20syst. The integral flux
above 300 GeV corresponds to ~2% of the flux of the Crab nebula. The source
spectral energy distribution (SED) can be described using a two-component
non-thermal synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) leptonic model, except in the
optical band, which is dominated by a thermal host galaxy component. The
parameters that are found are very close to those found in similar SSC studies
in TeV blazars. Conclusions: RGB J0152+017 is discovered as a source of VHE
gamma-rays by H.E.S.S. The location of its synchrotron peak, as derived from
the SED in Swift data, allows clearly classification it as a
high-frequency-peaked BL Lac (HBL).Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters (5 pages, 4 figures
Fermi-LAT Search for Pulsar Wind Nebulae around gamma-ray Pulsars
The high sensitivity of the Fermi-LAT (Large Area Telescope) offers the first
opportunity to study faint and extended GeV sources such as pulsar wind nebulae
(PWNe). After one year of observation the LAT detected and identified three
pulsar wind nebulae: the Crab Nebula, Vela-X and the PWN inside MSH 15-52. In
the meantime, the list of LAT detected pulsars increased steadily. These
pulsars are characterized by high energy loss rates from ~3 \times 10^{33} erg
s to 5 \times 10 erg s and are therefore likely to power a
PWN. This paper summarizes the search for PWNe in the off-pulse windows of 54
LAT-detected pulsars using 16 months of survey observations. Ten sources show
significant emission, seven of these likely being of magnetospheric origin. The
detection of significant emission in the off-pulse interval offers new
constraints on the gamma-ray emitting regions in pulsar magnetospheres. The
three other sources with significant emission are the Crab Nebula, Vela-X and a
new pulsar wind nebula candidate associated with the LAT pulsar PSR J1023-5746,
coincident with the TeV source HESS J1023-575. We further explore the
association between the H.E.S.S. and the Fermi source by modeling its spectral
energy distribution. Flux upper limits derived for the 44 remaining sources are
used to provide new constraints on famous PWNe that have been detected at keV

The exceptionally powerful TeV gamma-ray emitters in the Large Magellanic Cloud
The Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, has been
observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) above an energy of
100 billion electron volts for a deep exposure of 210 hours. Three sources of
different types were detected: the pulsar wind nebula of the most energetic
pulsar known N 157B, the radio-loud supernova remnant N 132D and the largest
non-thermal X-ray shell - the superbubble 30 Dor C. The unique object SN 1987A
is, surprisingly, not detected, which constrains the theoretical framework of
particle acceleration in very young supernova remnants. These detections reveal
the most energetic tip of a gamma-ray source population in an external galaxy,
and provide via 30 Dor C the unambiguous detection of gamma-ray emission from a
