    Inheritance of photo-sensitivity in pigeonpea

    Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] is a short-day legume species and the late maturing genotypes are more photosensitive than early types. To generate information about the inheritance of photo-sensitivity, this study was conducted under natural and artificially extended (16 h) photo-periods using F1, F2 and BC1F1 generations. Under natural photo-period, F1 hybrids showed partial dominance of earliness; while in F2, a normal distribution that was skewed towards earliness was observed. In contrast under extended photo-period, the spread of F2 data was wide with discontinuities recorded at day 70, 82 and 103. Chisquare tests, when applied to F2 and BC1F1 data, suggested that three dominant genes (PS3, PS2 and PS1) controlled the expression of photo-sensitivity. These genes were found operating in a hierarchical order with PS2 and PS1 genes failing to express in the presence of PS3 gene. Similarly in the absence of PS3 gene, PS2 expressed but it masked the expression of PS1. Further, PS1 gene expressed only when both PS3 and PS2 were in recessive homozygous state. Hence, the proposed genetic model for photosensitivity in pigeonpea is PS3 > PS2 > PS1 and photoinsensitive genotype being a triple recessive (ps3ps3ps2 ps2ps1ps1)

    On the role of the magnetic dipolar interaction in cold and ultracold collisions: Numerical and analytical results for NH(3Σ^3\Sigma^-) + NH(3Σ^3\Sigma^-)

    We present a detailed analysis of the role of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in cold and ultracold collisions. We focus on collisions between magnetically trapped NH molecules, but the theory is general for any two paramagnetic species for which the electronic spin and its space-fixed projection are (approximately) good quantum numbers. It is shown that dipolar spin relaxation is directly associated with magnetic-dipole induced avoided crossings that occur between different adiabatic potential curves. For a given collision energy and magnetic field strength, the cross-section contributions from different scattering channels depend strongly on whether or not the corresponding avoided crossings are energetically accessible. We find that the crossings become lower in energy as the magnetic field decreases, so that higher partial-wave scattering becomes increasingly important \textit{below} a certain magnetic field strength. In addition, we derive analytical cross-section expressions for dipolar spin relaxation based on the Born approximation and distorted-wave Born approximation. The validity regions of these analytical expressions are determined by comparison with the NH + NH cross sections obtained from full coupled-channel calculations. We find that the Born approximation is accurate over a wide range of energies and field strengths, but breaks down at high energies and high magnetic fields. The analytical distorted-wave Born approximation gives more accurate results in the case of s-wave scattering, but shows some significant discrepancies for the higher partial-wave channels. We thus conclude that the Born approximation gives generally more meaningful results than the distorted-wave Born approximation at the collision energies and fields considered in this work.Comment: Accepted by Eur.     A substantial number of children in foster care exhibit psychiatric difficulties. Recent epidemiologi-cal and historical trends in foster care, clinical findings about the adjustment of children in foster care, and adult outcomes are reviewed, followed by a description of current approaches to treatment and extant empirical support. Available interventions for these children can be categorized as either symptom-focused or systemic, with empirical support for specific methods ranging from scant to substantial. Even with treatment, behavioral and emotional problems often persist into adulthood, resulting in poor functional outcomes. We suggest that self-regulation may be an important mediat-ing factor in the appearance of emotional and behavioral disturbance in these children

    Integrating sequence and array data to create an improved 1000 Genomes Project haplotype reference panel

    A major use of the 1000 Genomes Project (1000GP) data is genotype imputation in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Here we develop a method to estimate haplotypes from low-coverage sequencing data that can take advantage of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray genotypes on the same samples. First the SNP array data are phased to build a backbone (or 'scaffold') of haplotypes across each chromosome. We then phase the sequence data 'onto' this haplotype scaffold. This approach can take advantage of relatedness between sequenced and non-sequenced samples to improve accuracy. We use this method to create a new 1000GP haplotype reference set for use by the human genetic community. Using a set of validation genotypes at SNP and bi-allelic indels we show that these haplotypes have lower genotype discordance and improved imputation performance into downstream GWAS samples, especially at low-frequency variants. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited.     Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

    Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

    Effects of planting density on growth, light interception and yield of a photoperiod insensitive pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan)

    A newly selected short-statured, early flowering, photoperiod insensitive line of pigeon pea was planted in February 1979 at four densities, viz. 2 × 105, 3 × 105, 5 × 105 and 1 × 106 plants ha-1. Maximum values of relative growth rate (RGR) (0.17 g g-1 day-1), net assimilation rate (NAR) (85 g m-2 week-1) and leaf area ratio (LAR) (1.6 dm2 g-1) were achieved by 25 days from planting at the lower densities. Maximum NAR and RGR at 1 × 106 density was delayed until day 36. By day 45 this density had almost complete light interception, and all densities had complete interception by day 85. This variety had a low extinction coefficient (0.3) suggesting that canopy structure was efficient in allowing light penetration. Since crop growth rate and leaf area index (LAI) were linearly related, highest dry matter yields were at the highest density. Highest seed yield per hectare (1300 kg) was at the 5 × 105 density, but overall, yields were not significantly different. Pod number per plant was the main determinant of yield. From the relationship of pod number per plant and density, an optimum density of 7.5 × 105 plants ha-1 was predicted. It was concluded on the basis of growth and leaf area data that this new material could support a higher photosynthetic demand if the objectives of a breeding program to increase seed size and/or seeds per pod could be achieved
