Determination of alpha_s using Jet Rates at LEP with the OPAL detector
Hadronic events produced in e+e- collisions by the LEP collider and recorded
by the OPAL detector were used to form distributions based on the number of
reconstructed jets. The data were collected between 1995 and 2000 and
correspond to energies of 91 GeV, 130-136 GeV and 161-209 GeV. The jet rates
were determined using four different jet-finding algorithms (Cone, JADE, Durham
and Cambridge). The differential two-jet rate and the average jet rate with the
Durham and Cambridge algorithms were used to measure alpha(s) in the LEP energy
range by fitting an expression in which order alpah_2s calculations were
matched to a NLLA prediction and fitted to the data. Combining the measurements
at different centre-of-mass energies, the value of alpha_s (Mz) was determined
to be

Sodium and potassium intakes among US adults: NHANES 2003–2008
Background: The American Heart Association (AHA), Institute of Medicine (IOM), and US Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture (USDA) Dietary Guidelines for Americans all recommend that Americans limit sodium intake and choose foods that contain potassium to decrease the risk of hypertension and other adverse health outcomes. Objective: We estimated the distributions of usual daily sodium and potassium intakes by sociodemographic and health characteristics relative to current recommendations. Design: We used 24-h dietary recalls and other data from 12,581 adults aged 51 y or persons with hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease), 98.8% (98.4%, 99.2%) overall consumed .1500 mg/d, and 60.4% consumed .3000 mg/d—more than double the recommendation. Overall, ,2% of US adults and w5% of US men consumed $4700 mg K/d (ie, met recommendations for potassium). Conclusion: Regardless of recommendations or sociodemographic or health characteristics, the vast majority of US adults consume too much sodium and too little potassium
Measurement of the mass difference m(D-s(+))-m(D+) at CDF II
We present a measurement of the mass difference m(D-s(+))-m(D+), where both the D-s(+) and D+ are reconstructed in the phipi(+) decay channel. This measurement uses 11.6 pb(-1) of data collected by CDF II using the new displaced-track trigger. The mass difference is found to be m(D-s(+))-m(D+)=99.41+/-0.38(stat)+/-0.21(syst) MeV/c(2)
Bordering practices in the UK welfare system
This article considers how chauvinistic welfare policies operate as a bordering practice. Taking the UK as an example, it examines a process in which welfare provisions have increasingly been withdrawn from a group of people designated as undeserving. It points out a close link between chauvinism based on ethnicity and based on class. This relation is explored in detail for the case of social housing culminating in today’s “social housing for local people” approach. A second case, access to social services for unaccompanied minors, is presented to illustrate bordering practices that operate in everyday services despite existing legal entitlements. The cases show that governments and service providers frequently act outside their legal remits to pursue this agenda, despite the UK’s antidiscrimination legislation
Tribological Performance of Additively Manufactured AISI H13 Steel in Different Surface Conditions
Additive manufacturing of metallic tribological components offers unprecedented degrees of freedom, but the surface roughness of most as-printed surfaces impedes the direct applicability of such structures, and postprocessing is necessary. Here, the tribological performance of AISI H13 steel samples was studied. These were additively manufactured through laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF), also referred to as selective laser melting (SLM). Samples were tested in four different surface conditions: as-printed, polished, ground and polished, and laser-surface-textured (LST) with round dimples. Friction experiments were conducted in a pin-on-disk fashion against bearing steel disks under lubrication with an additive-free mineral base oil for sliding speeds between 20 and 170 mm/s. Results demonstrated that, among the four surface treatments, grinding and polishing resulted in the lowest friction coefficient, followed by the as-printed state, while both polishing alone and laser-surface texturing increased the friction coefficient. Surprisingly, direct correlation between surface roughness and friction coefficient, i.e., the rougher the surface was, the higher the friction force, was not observed. Wear was minimal in all cases and below what could be detected by gravimetrical means. These results highlight the need for an adequate post-processing treatment of additively manufactured parts that are to be employed in tribological systems
