    Valor nutricional de los ácidos grasos de los peces de agua dulce neotropicales Prochilodus magdalenae, Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum y Ageneiosus pardalis

    This study aimed to determine the nutritional value of the fatty acids in the freshwater fish Prochilodus magdalenae, Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum and Ageneiosus pardalis during dry and wet Neotropical seasons with the view to generate useful information for nutrition and sustainable commercial exploitation. The analysis of fatty acids was performed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and the nutritional value was calculated using five estimators: n-6/n-3 ratio, unsaturation index (UI), atherogenicity index (AI), thrombogenicity index (TI) and ratio of hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic (h/H) fatty acids. A different number of fatty acids (P. magdaleniatum = 50, P. magdalenae = 41, and A. pardalis = 32) was identified for each species and the average abundance percentages were different in the two seasons (p < 0.05). Prochilodus magdalenae and P. magdaleniatum showed healthy n-6/n-3 ratios (1.04 and 2.72) in the different seasons. Although the three species showed low values of UI (0.37–0.63), the remaining nutritional indexes were within the healthy range (AI: 0.04–0.70, TI: 0.66–1.07, h/H: 0.80 – 24.40). Multivariate analysis showed similar healthy nutritional values for the species, with exception of P. magdaleniatum.En este estudio se determinó el valor nutricional de ácidos grasos presentes en las especies P. magdaleniatum, P. magdalenae y A. pardalis en los periodos lluvioso y seco, con el fin de generar información útil para una nutrición saludable y una explotación comercial sostenible. El análisis de los ácidos grasos se realizó por CG-EM y el valor nutricional se estimó mediante relación n-6/n-3, índices de insaturación (II), aterogenicidad (IA), trombogenicidad (IT) y relación de ácidos grasos hipocolesterolémicos/hipercolesterolémicos (h/H). Se identificaron números diferentes de ácidos grasos en cada especie (P. magdaleniatum = 50, P. magdalenae = 41 and A. pardalis = 32) y las medias de los porcentajes mayoritarios fueron diferentes en los dos periodos (p < 0,05). Las especies P. magdalenae y P. magdaleniatum mostraron relaciones n-6/n-3 saludables (1,04 y 2,72) en periodos diferentes. Aunque las tres especies mostraron valores II bajos (0,37-0,63), los demás índices IA (0,04-0,70), TI (0,66-1,07) y h/H (0,80 – 24,40) están dentro del rango saludable. El análisis multivariante mostró valores nutricionales similares en dos especies excepto P. magdaleniatum

    Objetivo: Este trabajo potencia el desarrollo de habilidades del pensamiento crítico en estudiantes con limitación visual de noveno grado de la Institución Educativa Distrital la Magdalena, a través de una propuesta pedagógica de inclusión para graficar funciones afines. Método: Se implementó una investigación de tipo cualitativa, recogiéndose información a partir de la observación, dialogo y prueba diagnóstica, en estudiantes regulares y con limitación visual, con base en a los resultados se diseñaron las actividades de la propuesta. Conclusiones: El alumno con limitación visual potencia el desarrollo de estas habilidades al hacerles partícipes en el aula de clases

    El estudio del modelo relacional aplicado a las bases de datos es una parte fundamental en los estudios de toda Ingeniería Informática, tanto técnica como superior. Los lenguajes de consulta relacionales forman una parte importante de este estudio. Nuestra experiencia nos ha mostrado que, para los alumnos, es difícil conocer cuándo las consultas expresadas en un papel en términos de estos lenguajes son correctas y responden satisfactoriamente a los enunciados planteados. En este trabajo se describe una herramienta de apoyo que permite realizar consultas expresadas en lenguajes relacionales sobre cualquier base de datos. Esta herramienta se ha desarrollado siguiendo el modelo del software libre. Además este trabajo expone los resultados de un estudio comparativo entre esta herramienta y otras herramientas que se puede descargar libremente de Internet

    Profilaxis de la tromboembolia venosa en pacientes colombianos de tratamiento médico o quirúrgico: resultados para Colombia del estudio ENDORSE

    Introduction. More information is needed on the risk of venous thromboembolism in the hospital setting, and on patterns of use of thromboprophylaxis, as advocated in consensus guidelines. ENDORSE was an international study aimed at evaluating hospital venous thromboembolism prevention practices in medical and surgical patientes.Objectives. The risk of venous thromboembolism was evaluated along with the use of thromboprophylaxis in hospitalized medical and surgical subjects; these data were compared with the international sample from the ENDORSE study.Materials and methods. Participating institutions in Colombia were selected arbitrarily. The medical charts for medical and surgical patients were evaluated randomly. The 2004 American College of Chest Physician guidelines were used to evaluate risk of venous thromboembolism and adherence to recommended thromboprophylaxis regimens.Results. The study included 761 subjects (218 surgical, 543 medical) located in five acute care hospitals; 49% of these subjects were considered at risk of venous thromboembolism (40% medical, 72% surgical), compared with 52% in the international sample. Prophylaxis use was higher in medical patients at risk (63.7%, n=137) than in surgical patients (48.4%, n=76; p=0.01). Compared with the international sample, the use of prophylaxis in Colombia was greater in medical patients (63.7% vs. 39.5%, p=0.003), but lower in surgical patients (48.4% vs. 58.5%, p=0.02).Conclusions. Participating Colombian centers treat patients at risk of venous thromboembolism similarly to other participant countries, but appropriate prophylaxis was prescribed more frequently to medical patients. Greater efforts are needed, both in Colombia and around the world, to improve rates of appropriate venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in at-risk subjects.Introducción. La profilaxis en pacientes de tratamiento médico o quirúrgico con riesgo de tromboembolia venosa, requiere ser evaluada para obtener suficiente información que contribuya a mejorar estas prácticas, para que sean efectivas y eficaces, y ayudar con las medidas necesarias de prevención hospitalaria de la tromboembolia venosa.Objetivo. Evaluar el riesgo de tromboembolia venosa y de los hábitos de profilaxis en pacientes de tratamiento médico o quirúrgico hospitalizados en Colombia y compararlos con los de los centros internacionales participantes en el estudio ENDORSE.Materiales y métodos. Las instituciones fueron escogidas al azar. Se evaluaron todas las historias clínicas de pacientes de tratamiento médico o quirúrgico. Se utilizaron las guías del 2004 del American College of Chest Physicians para evaluar el riesgo de tromboembolia venosa y lo apropiado de la profilaxis.Resultados. Se evaluaron 761 pacientes: 218 de tratamiento quirúrgico y 543 de tratamiento médico, de cinco centros hospitalarios de Colombia. De esta población, 49 % se encontraba en riesgo de tromboembolia venosa (40 % de los de tratamiento médico y 72% de los de tratamiento quirúrgico), en comparación con 52 % de la muestra internacional. La profilaxis fue significativamente mayor en los pacientes de tratamiento médico en riesgo (63,7 %, n=137), que en los de tratamiento quirúrgico (48,4 %, n=76, P=0,01). En comparación con la muestra internacional, la profilaxis en los de tratamiento médico fue significativamente superior (63,7 % Vs. 39,5 %, P=0,003), a diferencia de los de tratamiento quirúrgico (48,4 % Vs. 58,5 %, P=0,02).Conclusiones. Los resultados muestran que en los centros hospitalarios de Colombia se trataron pacientes con riesgo de tromboembolia venosa en forma similar al resto de los países participantes en el estudio ENDORSE, y que se hizo más profilaxis apropiada en pacientes de tratamiento médico.     Chaperoned amyloid proteins for immune manipulation: A-synuclein/hsp70 shifts immunity toward a modulatory phenotype

    a-Synuclein (aSyn) is a 140-residue amyloid-forming protein whose aggregation is linked to Parkinson’s disease (PD). It has also been found to play a critical role in the immune imbalance that accompanies disease progression, a characteristic that has prompted the search for an effective aSyn-based immunotherapy. In this study, we have simultaneously exploited two important features of certain heat-shock proteins (HSPs): their classical ‘‘chaperone’’ activities and their recently discovered and diverse ‘‘immunoactive’’ properties. In particular, we have explored the immune response elicited by immunization of C57BL/6 mice with an aSyn/Hsp70 protein combination in the absence of added adjuvant. Our results show differential effects for mice immunized with the aSyn/Hsp70 complex, including a restrained aSyn-specific (IgM and IgG) humoral response as well as minimized alterations in the Treg (CD4 CD25 Foxp3 ) and Teff (CD4 Foxp3 ) cell populations, as opposed to significant changes in mice immunized with aSyn and Hsp70 alone. Furthermore, in vitro-stimulated splenocytes from immunized mice showed the lowest relative response against aSyn challenge for the ‘‘aSyn/Hsp70’’ experimental group as measured by IFN-g and IL-17 secretion, and higher IL-10 levels when stimulated with LPS. Finally, serum levels of Th1-cytokine IFN-g and immunomodulatory IL-10 indicated a unique shift toward an immunomodulato-ry/immunoprotective phenotype in mice immunized with the aSyn/Hsp70 complex.     Dual cholinergic signals regulate daily migration of hematopoietic stem cells and leukocytes.

    Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) and leukocytes circulate between the bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood following circadian oscillations. Autonomic sympathetic noradrenergic signals have been shown to regulate HSPC and leukocyte trafficking, but the role of the cholinergic branch has remained unexplored. We have investigated the role of the cholinergic nervous system in the regulation of day/night traffic of HSPCs and leukocytes in mice. We show here that the autonomic cholinergic nervous system (including parasympathetic and sympathetic) dually regulates daily migration of HSPCs and leukocytes. At night, central parasympathetic cholinergic signals dampen sympathetic noradrenergic tone and decrease BM egress of HSPCs and leukocytes. However, during the daytime, derepressed sympathetic noradrenergic activity causes predominant BM egress of HSPCs and leukocytes via β3-adrenergic receptor. This egress is locally supported by light-triggered sympathetic cholinergic activity, which inhibits BM vascular cell adhesion and homing. In summary, central (parasympathetic) and local (sympathetic) cholinergic signals regulate day/night oscillations of circulating HSPCs and leukocytes. This study shows how both branches of the autonomic nervous system cooperate to orchestrate daily traffic of HSPCs and leukocytes

    A cholinergic neuroskeletal interface promotes bone formation during postnatal growth and exercise.

    The autonomic nervous system is a master regulator of homeostatic processes and stress responses. Sympathetic noradrenergic nerve fibers decrease bone mass, but the role of cholinergic signaling in bone has remained largely unknown. Here, we describe that early postnatally, a subset of sympathetic nerve fibers undergoes an interleukin-6 (IL-6)-induced cholinergic switch upon contacting the bone. A neurotrophic dependency mediated through GDNF-family receptor-α2 (GFRα2) and its ligand, neurturin (NRTN), is established between sympathetic cholinergic fibers and bone-embedded osteocytes, which require cholinergic innervation for their survival and connectivity. Bone-lining osteoprogenitors amplify and propagate cholinergic signals in the bone marrow (BM). Moderate exercise augments trabecular bone partly through an IL-6-dependent expansion of sympathetic cholinergic nerve fibers. Consequently, loss of cholinergic skeletal innervation reduces osteocyte survival and function, causing osteopenia and impaired skeletal adaptation to moderate exercise. These results uncover a cholinergic neuro-osteocyte interface that regulates skeletogenesis and skeletal turnover through bone-anabolic effects

    The ‘social licence to operate’ (SLO) is a construct that has potential to transform the mining sector internationally. The SLO is increasing in importance because it can reduce all risks during the energy project life-cycle that are detrimental to the success of energy projects. This paper analyses how SLO's are at first perceived by interdisciplinary energy scholars before examining the legal nature of an SLO and looking at the effectiveness of such an agreement from the perspectives of both the energy company and the local community. In essence, this research seeks to address what is the legal basis of an SLO. Further, an original case study on Columbia is presented which highlights the SLO in action and its transformative effect.
