    Two Dimensional Modeling of III-V Heterojunction Gate All Around Tunnel Field Effect Transistor

    Tunnel Field Effect Transistor is one of the extensively researched semiconductor devices, which has captured attention over the conventional Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor. This device, due to its varied advantages, is considered in applications where devices are scaled down to deep submicron level. Like MOSFETs, many geometries of TFETs have been studied and analyzed in the past few years. This work, presents a two dimensional analytical model for a III-V Heterojunction Surrounding Gate Tunneling Field Effect Transistor. 2-D Poisson’s equation in cylindrical coordinates has been solved to derive the expression of Surface Potential and threshold voltage of the device. A broken gap GaSb/InAs heterostructure has been considered in this work. Variation of potential profiles are shown with different gate and drain biases, by varying radius of the transistor,and different gate metals. Also, variation of threshold voltage is shown with respect to channel length and radius of the nanowire

    Mid-IR period-magnitude relations for AGB stars

    Asymptotic Giant Branch variables are found to obey period-luminosity relations in the mid-IR similar to those seen at K_S (2.14 microns), even at 24 microns where emission from circumstellar dust is expected to be dominant. Their loci in the M, logP diagrams are essentially the same for the LMC and for NGC6522 in spite of different ages and metallicities. There is no systematic trend of slope with wavelength. The offsets of the apparent magnitude vs. logP relations imply a difference between the two fields of 3.8 in distance modulus. The colours of the variables confirm that a principal period with log P > 1.75 is a necessary condition for detectable mass-loss. At the longest observed wavelength, 24 microns, many semi-regular variables have dust shells comparable in luminosity to those around Miras. There is a clear bifurcation in LMC colour-magnitude diagrams involving 24 micron magnitudes.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    DGAT1 and ABCG2 polymorphism in Indian cattle (Bos indicus) and buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) breeds

    BACKGROUND: Indian cattle (Bos indicus) and riverine buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) give a poor yield of milk but it has a high fat and protein percentage compared to taurine cattle. The identification of QTLs (Quantitative Trait Loci) on BTA14 and BTA6 and its subsequent fine mapping has led to identification of two non conservative mutations affecting milk production and composition. Our objective was to estimate the frequency of K232A (DGAT1 – diacylglycerol – acyltransferase 1) and Y581S (ABCG2 – ATP binding cassette sub family G member 2) polymorphisms in diverse cattle and buffalo breeds of India having large variation in terms of milk production. RESULTS: We screened the reported missense mutations in six cattle and five buffalo breeds. The DGAT1(K )and ABCG2(Y )alleles were found to be fixed in Indian cattle and buffalo breeds studied. CONCLUSION: This study provides an indirect evidence that all the Indian cattle and buffalo breeds have fixed alleles with respect to DGAT1 and ABCG2 genes reported to be responsible for higher milk fat yield, higher fat and protein percent

    Probing Cosmic Dust of the Early Universe through High-Redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts

    We explore the extinction properties of the dust in the distant universe through the afterglows of high-redshifted GRBs based on the "Drude" model which, unlike previous studies, does not require a prior assumption of template extinction laws. We select GRB070802 at z~2.45 (which shows clear evidence for the 2175\AA extinction bump) and GRB050904 at z~6.29, the 2nd most distant GRB observed to date. We fit their afterglow spectra to determine the extinction of their host galaxies. We find that (1) their extinction curves differ substantially from that of the Milky Way, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (which were widely adopted as template extinction laws in literature); (2) the 2175\AA extinction feature appears to be also present in GRB050904 at z~6.29; and (3) there does not appear to show strong evidence for a dependence of dust extinction on redshifts. The inferred extinction curves are closely reproduced in terms of a mixture of amorphous silicate and graphite, both of which are expected supernova condensates and have been identified in primitive meteorites as presolar grains originating from supernovae (which are considered as the main source of dust at high-z).Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Characterization of PRLR and PPARGC1A genes in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)

    More than 40 million households in India depend at least partially on livestock production. Buffaloes are one of the major milk producers in India. The prolactin receptor (PRLR) gene and peroxisome proliferators activated receptor-γ coactivator 1-alpha (PPARGC1A) gene are reportedly associated with milk protein and milk fat yields in Bos taurus. In this study, we sequenced the PRLR and PPARGC1A genes in the water buffalo Bubalus bubalis. The PRLR and PPARGC1A genes coded for 581 and 819 amino acids, respectively. The B. bubalis PRLR gene differed from the corresponding Bos taurus at 21 positions and four differences with an additional arginine at position 620 in the PPARGC1A gene were found in the amino acid sequence. All of the changes were confirmed by cDNA sequencing. Twelve buffalo-specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in both genes, with five of them being non-synonymous

    The Excitation of Extended Red Emission: New Constraints on its Carrier From HST Observations of NGC 7023

    The carrier of the dust-associated photoluminescence process causing the extended red emission (ERE) in many dusty interstellar environments remains unidentified. Several competing models are more or less able to match the observed broad, unstructured ERE band. We now constrain the character of the ERE carrier further by determining the wavelengths of the radiation that initiates the ERE. Using the imaging capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope, we have resolved the width of narrow ERE filaments appearing on the surfaces of externally illuminated molecular clouds in the bright reflection nebula NGC 7023 and compared them with the depth of penetration of radiation of known wavelengths into the same cloud surfaces. We identify photons with wavelengths shortward of 118 nm as the source of ERE initiation, not to be confused with ERE excitation, however. There are strong indications from the well-studied ERE in the Red Rectangle nebula and in the high-|b| Galactic cirrus that the photon flux with wavelengths shortward of 118 nm is too small to actually excite the observed ERE, even with 100% quantum efficiency. We conclude, therefore, that ERE excitation results from a two-step process. While none of the previously proposed ERE models can match these new constraints, we note that under interstellar conditions most polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules are ionized to the di-cation stage by photons with E > 10.5 eV and that the electronic energy level structure of PAH di-cations is consistent with fluorescence in the wavelength band of the ERE.     On the Origins of the High-Latitude H-alpha Background

    The diffuse high-latitude H-alpha background is widely believed to be predominantly the result of in-situ recombination of ionized hydrogen in the warm interstellar medium of the Galaxy. Instead, we show that both a substantial fraction of the diffuse high-latitude H-alpha intensity in regions dominated by Galactic cirrus dust and much of the variance in the high-latitude H-alpha background are the result of scattering by interstellar dust of H-alpha photons originating elsewhere in the Galaxy. We provide an empirical relation, which relates the expected scattered H-alpha intensity to the IRAS 100um diffuse background intensity, applicable to about 81% of the entire sky. The assumption commonly made in reductions of CMB observations, namely that the observed all-sky map of diffuse H-alpha light is a suitable template for Galactic free-free foreground emission, is found to be in need of reexamination.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap

    Characterization of GPX1 and DIO1 Genes in Bubalus Bubalis

    Selenoprotein genes contain selenium in the form of selenocysteine which is involved in protecting the cells from oxidative stress. Soils in India differ greatly in selenium concentrations affecting feed stuffs for selenium availability. Selenoproteins have recently been identified in variety of living organisms including humans which have 25 selenoprotein genes. Among these families of selenoprotein genes, we sequenced Gpx1 gene (Glutathione peroxidases1) and Dio1 gene (Iodothyronine deiodinases) in Bubalus bubalis. Gpx1 is most abundant and ubiquitously expressed selenoprotein which helps to protect against the damaging effects of hydrogen peroxide and oxygen rich free radicals whereas Dio1 is expressed mainly in liver, thyroid gland and adipose tissue, its main function is to convert tetraiodothyronine (T4) to its active form thyroxine (T3) in the presence of deiodinases enzyme. The main aim of the study was to characterize these two genes and to find out the buffalo specific SNPs. This was accomplished by designing primers using cattle database and sequencing a panel of 24 samples consisting of 6 diverse breeds of buffalo. Gpx1 consisted of 2 exons (Accession ID: JQ031269) while Dio1 comprised 4 exons (Accession ID: JQ791197). In Gpx1 gene, 9 SNPs were recorded and 4 were non synonymous, changing amino acid were distributed equally in both exon. In exon 1, A141G (aa Q5R) and G161A (aa A12T); and in exon 2 C785T (aa R132W) and A808T (aa S139R). In Dio1 gene, 3 non synonymous SNPs were identified at A188G (aa H22R), C215G (aa T31R) and G941A (aa V146I). These SNPs are novel and reported for the first time in Indian buffalo and has a potential for their use in diversity analysis and association with various selenium related traits

    Dissociation of the benzene molecule by UV and soft X-rays in circumstellar environment

    Benzene molecules, present in the proto-planetary nebula CRL 618, are ionized and dissociated by UV and X-ray photons originated from the hot central star and by its fast wind. Ionic species and free radicals produced by these processes can lead to the formation of new organic molecules. The aim of this work is to study the photoionization and photodissociation processes of the benzene molecule, using synchrotron radiation and time of flight mass spectrometry. Mass spectra were recorded at different energies corresponding to the vacuum ultraviolet (21.21 eV) and soft X-ray (282-310 eV) spectral regions. The production of ions from the benzene dissociative photoionization is here quantified, indicating that C6H6 is more efficiently fragmented by soft X-ray than UV radiation, where 50% of the ionized benzene molecules survive to UV dissociation while only about 4% resist to X-rays. Partial ion yields of H+ and small hydrocarbons such as C2H2+, C3H3+ and C4H2+ are determined as a function of photon energy. Absolute photoionization and dissociative photoionization cross sections have also been determined. From these values, half-life of benzene molecule due to UV and X-ray photon fluxes in CRL 618 were obtained.Comment: The paper contains 8 pages, 9 figures and 4 tables.     Optical Emission Band Morphologies of the Red Rectangle

    We present narrow-band images of the Red Rectangle (RR) nebula which reveal the distinct morphologies of this intriguing nebula in different optical emission bands. The morphology of the RR nebula in blue luminescence (BL) and extended red emission (ERE) are almost mutually exclusive. We also present the optical detection of the circum-binary disk of the RR in the light of the BL. The total intensities from the two optical band emissions (BL and ERE) when summed over the nebula are of comparable magnitude. Their spatial distributions with respect to the embedded illumination sources lead us to suggest that they may be attributed to different ionization stages of the same family of carriers.Comment: Accepted to Ap
