Barriers to women entrepreneurship. Different methods, different results?

    Get PDF
Building on research by Akehurst et al. (Serv Ind J 32:2489-2505, 2012), this study analysed internal and external factors in women entrepreneurship and linked these factors to the barriers that women face when starting businesses. To do so, two contrasting statistical techniques were used: PLS and QCA. After analysing results from each of these techniques, we observed that family duties and difficulties in obtaining financing (both internal and external) were the main factors related to barriers faced by women entrepreneurs

Experience and gender effects in acquisition experiment with value messages

In the bargaining experiment, the privately informed seller of a company sends a value message to the uninformed potential buyer who proposes a price for acquiring the company. Participants are constantly either seller or buyer and interact over 30 rounds with randomly changing partners. How are overstating the value of the company, underpricing the received value message and acceptance of price offers affected by experience and gender (constellation)? We control via treatments for awareness of gender (constellation) and show that gender (constellation) matters and that the main experience effects apply across gender (constellations)

Psychological problems are common amongst youth who experience problems in multiple area’s of life. Connection to community and social networks is essential in order to treat and resolve mental illness. As it o¥ ers youths the chance to experience positivity and success, improve their self image and regain perspective. To stimulate the development of this target group, youth welfare and youth mentalhealthcare sectors need each other. In cooperation lies the chance of creating better opportunities for a large group of adolescents. The EventHandsprogram, operational in Amsterdam since 2010, o¥ ers youths who experience di¼ culties in school, work or at home, the opportunity to get their lives back on track. They gain work experience within the cultural sector under professional supervision. The approach links up with the branch of positive psychology and aims to: empower and facilitate personal growth, prepare for education, labor and social participation. Initial results are promising

Molecular profiles of response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in oesophageal cancers to develop personalized treatment strategies

Identification of molecular predictive markers of response to neoadjuvant chemoradiation could aid clinical decision-making in patients with localized oesophageal cancer. Therefore, we subjected pretreatment biopsies of 75 adenocarcinoma (OAC) and 16 squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients to targeted next-generation DNA sequencing, as well as biopsies of 85 OAC and 20 OSCC patients to promoter methylation analysis of eight GI-specific genes, and subsequently searched for associations with histopathological response and disease-free (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Thereby, we found that in OAC, CSMD1 deletion (8%) and ETV4 amplification (5%) were associated with a favourable histopathological response, whereas SMURF1 amplification (5%) and SMARCA4 mutation (7%) were associated with an unfavourable histopathological response. KRAS (15%) and GATA4 (7%) amplification were associated with shorter OS. In OSCC, TP63 amplification (25%) and TFPI2 (10%) gene promoter methylation were associated with an unfavourable histopathological response and shorter DFS (TP63) and OS (TFPI2), whereas CDKN2A deletion (38%) was associated with prolonged OS. In conclusion, this study identified candidate genetic biomarkers associated with response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in patients with localized oesophageal cancer
