    Important amino acid residues of potato plant uncoupling protein (StUCP)

    Chemical modifications were used to identify some of the functionally important amino acid residues of the potato plant uncoupling protein (StUCP). The proton-dependent swelling of potato mitochondria in K+-acetate in the presence of linoleic acid and valinomycin was inhibited by mersalyl (Ki = 5 µM) and other hydrophilic SH reagents such as Thiolyte MB, iodoacetate and 5,5'-dithio-bis-(2-nitrobenzoate), but not by hydrophobic N-ethylmaleimide. This pattern of inhibition by SH reagents was similar to that of brown adipose tissue uncoupling protein (UCP1). As with UCP1, the arginine reagent 2,3-butadione, but not N-ethylmaleimide or other hydrophobic SH reagents, prevented the inhibition of StUCP-mediated transport by ATP in isolated potato mitochondria or with reconstituted StUCP. The results indicate that the most reactive amino acid residues in UCP1 and StUCP are similar, with the exception of N-ethylmaleimide-reactive cysteines in the purine nucleotide-binding site.1413142

    A Mission to Mars: Prediction of GCR Doses and Comparison with Astronaut Dose Limits

    Long-term human space missions such as a future journey to Mars could be characterized by several hazards, among which radiation is one the highest-priority problems for astronaut health. In this work, exploiting a pre-existing interface between the BIANCA biophysical model and the FLUKA Monte Carlo transport code, a study was performed to calculate astronaut absorbed doses and equivalent doses following GCR exposure under different shielding conditions. More specifically, the interface with BIANCA allowed us to calculate both the RBE for cell survival, which is related to non-cancer effects, and that for chromosome aberrations, related to the induction of stochastic effects, including cancer. The results were then compared with cancer and non-cancer astronaut dose limits. Concerning the stochastic effects, the equivalent doses calculated by multiplying the absorbed dose by the RBE for chromosome aberrations (“high-dose method”) were similar to those calculated using the Q-values recommended by ICRP. For a 650-day mission at solar minimum (representative of a possible Mars mission scenario), the obtained values are always lower than the career limit recommended by ICRP (1 Sv), but higher than the limit of 600 mSv recently adopted by NASA. The comparison with the JAXA limits is more complex, since they are age and sex dependent. Concerning the deterministic limits, even for a 650-day mission at solar minimum, the values obtained by multiplying the absorbed dose by the RBE for cell survival are largely below the limits established by the various space agencies. Following this work, BIANCA, interfaced with an MC transport code such as FLUKA, can now predict RBE values for cell death and chromosome aberrations following GCR exposure. More generally, both at solar minimum and at solar maximum, shielding of 10 g/cm2^2 Al seems to be a better choice than 20 g/cm2^2 for astronaut protection against GCR

    Almond witches’-broom phytoplasma (Candidatus Phytoplasma phoenicium): a real threat to almond, peach and nectarine.

    Within less than a decade, Almond witches’-broom (AlmWB) phytoplasma killed over a hundred thousand almond trees in Lebanon (Abou-Jawdah et al., 2002). AlmWB belongs to the pigeon pea witches’ broom group (16SrIX), and the scientific name (Candidatus Phytoplasma phoenicium) was suggested (Verdin et al., 2003). Grafting experiments revealed that AlmWB may also affect peaches and nectarines (Abou-Jawdah et al, 2003). Later on, a similar disease was reported in Iran (Verdin et al., 2003; Salehi et al., 2006). This disease is still spreading on almond trees to new areas in North Lebanon, but more recently shoot proliferation with succulent small light green leaves were observed on peach and nectarine in South Lebanon, where the disease seemed to be spreading relatively fast. DNA sequencing showed over 99% sequence homology with AlmWB (Abou-Jawdah et al. 2008). This report shows that epidemics of AlmWB may occur also on peach and nectarine under field conditions, and strongly suggests the presence of an efficient vector

    Characterization of Botrytis cinerea populations associated with treated and untreated cv. Moscato vineyards

    Three Botrytis cinerea populations, isolated from three vineyards, one untreated and two treated twice a year, respectively, with fenhexamid or cyprodinil+fludioxonil, were investigated to evaluate the effect of repeated fungicide treatments on the presence and distribution of the transposons Boty and Flipper, and on the phenotypic traits of each pathogen community. The vacuma individuals lacking the two transposons represented the majority of the 390 B. cinerea isolates followed by transposa strains containing Boty and Flipper, while the remaining 67 isolates harboured respectively only Boty (60) or Flipper (7). This research has demonstrated that fungicide application did not influence the transposon distribution patterns, the sensitivity towards various botryticides, or the growth rate of the isolates belonging to the three different populations, but did induced overall reduction of the population size and selected isolates characterized by an enhanced pathogenicity, especially on Vitis vinifera leaves

    Deposition of tin oxide, iridium and iridium oxide films by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition for electrochemical wastewater treatment

    In this research, the specific electrodes were prepared by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) in a hot-wall CVD reactor with the presence of O2 under reduced pressure. The Ir protective layer was deposited by using (Methylcyclopentadienyl) (1,5-cyclooctadiene) iridium (I), (MeCp)Ir(COD), as precursor. Tetraethyltin (TET) was used as precursor for the deposition of SnO2 active layer. The optimum condition for Ir film deposition was at 300 °C, 125 of O2/(MeCp)Ir(COD) molar ratio and 12 Torr of total pressure. While that of SnO2 active layer was at 380 °C, 1200 of O2/TET molar ratio and 15 Torr of total pressure. The prepared SnO2/Ir/Ti electrodes were tested for anodic oxidation of organic pollutant in a simple three-electrode electrochemical reactor using oxalic acid as model solution. The electrochemical experiments indicate that more than 80% of organic pollutant was removed after 2.1 Ah/L of charge has been applied. The kinetic investigation gives a two-step process for organic pollutant degradation, the kinetic was zero-order and first-order with respect to TOC of model solution for high and low TOC concentrations, respectively

    Search for the exotic Θ+\Theta^+ resonance in the NOMAD experiment

    A search for exotic Theta baryon via Theta -> proton +Ks decay mode in the NOMAD muon neutrino DIS data is reported. The special background generation procedure was developed. The proton identification criteria are tuned to maximize the sensitivity to the Theta signal as a function of xF which allows to study the Theta production mechanism. We do not observe any evidence for the Theta state in the NOMAD data. We provide an upper limit on Theta production rate at 90% CL as 2.13 per 1000 of neutrino interactions.Comment: Accepted to European Physics Journal
